World’s Most Haunted Castles
eventective.com — It ’s called the Dark Ages for a reason. During medieval times, torture was a common practice. Castles were constructed to do more than simply house those in power; they were designed for imprisonment, torture and execution at the whim of whoever happened to be in power.

- ipek, on 03/26/2008, -1/+19How exactly do you decide which castle is more haunted than another?
- Burento, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6I would guess based on how famous and frequent the hauntings are. Some wackos might say it is based on how much spiritual energy it has. There is always a way to judge extremes.. :)
- DeskFlyer, on 03/26/2008, -0/+34Superdeleghosts.
- doctechnical, on 03/26/2008, -2/+12You pay some medium, sensitive, ghost-hunter or other ***** artist to put you on a list.

- Dumbledorito, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3What about the Twinkie?
- sirchrissypoo, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3Usually by how frequent activity is reported by visitors and how extreme the activity is (full body apparition, moving objects, interacting with people, etc.).
- gmiley, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8Every castle is just as "haunted" as the next as far as I'm concerned. While the thought of lingering spirits is a nifty idea, I've never seen anything to convince me that ghosts, phantoms, or other such disembodied souls exist anywhere, let alone a cold, damp, and drafty castle.
- pauleric, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6I believe the procedure for rating hauntiness involves scantily clad women, a film crew, and counting survivors. But the exact details vary by genre.
- nfkiller, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6creakiest floor boards, and a good P.R. guy?

- bluepass, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2The Bran Castle is not haunted. That's a load of bull. I was there last summer. It isn't the "home" of Vlad the Impaler either; it was in fact where he was held prisoner for a while. And if they couldn't get their facts straight about this one, I wouldn't expect the others to be very accurate either. There's my two cents on this.
- Burento, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4This site also has a bunch of great US based locations that are supposedly haunted... http://www.prairieghosts.com/mosthaunted.html
- sarazen, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Is Edinburgh Castle, Scotland the one that has an oubliette? Those things are creepy.
- Burento, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7At Leap Castle in Ireland workers discovered an oubliette. There are spikes at the bottom of this shaft, and when workers were cleaning it out, it took them three cartloads to carry out all the human bones at the bottom. A somewhat chilling report indicates that these workmen also found a ***** dated to the 1840s amongst the bones. There are no indications of whether or not the oubliette was still in use in that period.
- gmiley, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5At least mention that you took that straight from wikipedia...

- pwner84, on 03/26/2008, -10/+4Article missed out Udgar Wiesenthal's dark and shadowy castle hidden away in the Bulgarian Hinterlands. It's only accessible by foot due to the overgrowth and steep terrain. Women who passed through Wiesenthal's black forest were often never seen again. The tally of Wiesenthal's victims is still unknown. The Bulgarian government has warned tourists to not travel to the castle due to recent disappearances. Here is amateur footage taken by tourists back in 2002. Shows the dark castle courtyard, the chambers and the black alley. Not for the faint hearted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOU8GIRUd_g

- Jennifer67, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6I'd stay in a haunted castle no problem! Sounds like it would be a scream lol
- Chrisga, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Right there with you
- NSMike, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I've been to three of those castles, and even climbed the tower referenced in Warwick Castle. Didn't see or hear *****.
- bloggirl, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4I've driven by Windsor. I thought I saw Queen Elizabeth in the window, but nobody believed me.

- ghostfaceDX, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2You want to know why no one believed you? Because you're ***** crazy.
- ironicsans, on 03/26/2008, -6/+42All castles are equally haunted. That is to say, they're not.
- offspring06, on 03/26/2008, -13/+3I take it you never seen a ghost before. I always thought ghosts were ***** too until I moved into a house that was haunted.
- doctechnical, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6For all the "skeptics" out there - I know for a fact that there's some entity living in my apartment. I've heard strange bumps in the night, I wake up and find things in different places from where I've left them, crashes and broken dishware. scratching noises... I've also seen what looked like a pair of glowing eyes in the dark, but when I reached over to turn on the light they were gone. One night I woke up in feeling like something was sitting right on my chest.
And what's most puzzling of all is that strange smirk on my cat's face all the time.

- Chainheart, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5I would be interested in having a person who has never heard of the concept of "ghosts" before move into a haunted house and see if anything "happens" to them
- doctechnical, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I'd doubt there's a culture on earth that doesn't have some sort of "undead" mythology.

- rynTAU, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1The MOST haunted? Are there really so many of them that we need to narrow the list down by selecting the Most?

- Chrisga, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1cool. I've hit 3 outta 7 of those

- Daz3, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Where did you learn history? From Bruce Almighty?
- RioMo, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2At this point in time with all the greenlit links here and the documentaries on the tube I think the better question is, "are there any castles that aren't haunted?"
- ghostfaceDX, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3No. Now buy a T-shirt!
- Daz3, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1There is still not a single piece of empirical evidence that even insinuates that ghosts might exist.
- MrSoapbox, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7i think its a shame that our American friends don't have buildings even nearly so old... I love how much history we have in our country, no matter how gruesome is was, those castles are beautiful buildings
- Khevenhuller, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1It's true. Everything we have is new.....Even as a midwestern american, I was struck by how much older things seem on the east coast, and that's nothing compared to your history.
- BrendanSheehan, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4It's all bollox.
- itsthebrod, on 03/26/2008, -4/+13How ***** stupid. Are horoscopes also going to show up on Digg? Ghosts? Give me a break...
- Daz3, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I know, I wonder how many people around here believe 'mediums' actually talk to the dead as well...
- yaywowyay, on 03/26/2008, -3/+10no such thing as ghosts, sorry, kids.
- IllBeBack, on 03/26/2008, -2/+2I guess if there was any such thing as being "haunted," I would be worried. Since all mysterious happenings and so-called paranormal activities have real, live people behind them, I couldn't care less.
- Daz3, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I believe that a lot of it actually happens in the mind, fear would be a natural evolutionary response to dark, unknown and possibly dangerous places.
- JimXugle, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Even if you're not looking for a ghost, I suggest a visit to Warwick castle... it's like HDR... but in the highest resolution possible.
Oh, and it's pronouced WAR-rick... - biggiantmat, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10I don't really believe in ghosts as such, as I'm an atheist, and a scientist, however you can't deny that places where mass human suffering and death have happened, have a very uneasy feel to them. It is easy to arrogantly mock the idea of a haunting, but i bet most of these people wouldn't spend a night alone in these castles. They have a pretty horrific history to them, and i don't doubt that they are places that it would be easy to let your imagination wander, especially at night. I have to say that I would be ***** myself if i spent a night at any of these places on my own.
- sketec, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3I agree.
- doctechnical, on 03/26/2008, -3/+2Spooked =/= Haunted. See also "Superstition".
- Daz3, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1"as I'm an atheist"
Lack of a belief in a God is not relevant when talking about 'ghosts'.
"however you can't deny that places where mass human suffering and death have happened, have a very uneasy feel to them"
Only because you know that there were mass human deaths and suffering at that place; if I lined up 10 identical pieces of land and asked you to tell me which one had people executed on it your success rate would be the same as if you guessed.
"but i bet most of these people wouldn't spend a night alone in these castles."
I would.
- trispear, on 03/26/2008, -5/+0Fascinating how Great Britain seems to have all but 2 of the "Haunted" Castles. Even though every country in Europe has castles -- and those are a lot of countries!
Buried. Lame. - drizzlelicious, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Howbout Čachtice Castle, where hundreds of girls were brought to be tortured and killed at the sadistic whims of Elizabeth Bathory?
- ExGhost, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1How many castles get to be "England's most haunted"?
- amanilaenvelope, on 03/27/2008, -1/+8Have you seen Bowser's Castle? That thing is loaded with ghosts everywhere!
- WonderBoy55, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Wow, I'm glad my castle isn't haunted.
- tbenathan, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Buried for being inaccurate. There is no superlative, or even comparative, form of haunted - it's either haunted or not.
- Daz3, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2And it's not.
- Yage2006, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2Digg sure is starting to have a bit too much crap such as this hitting the front page.
You would think in the tech community people would be a bit more smart. Sigh
There is not one single haunted location on earth.

- roadtripper, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1either a place is haunted or it's not haunted, right? how can a place be "most haunted"? "kinda haunted"? "somewhat haunted"? "occasionally haunted"?
