Cruise Lines are going to be the savior of humanity. - anonypanda, on 10/31/2009, -0/+18Congrats Finland for building it! :D
- nikomo, on 10/31/2009, -2/+15Nobody cares.
Probably uses whales and baby seals for fuel. - sparkplug890, on 10/31/2009, -2/+13is it too big to fail?
- premiumballin, on 10/31/2009, -2/+12Well, at least there aren't any more icebergs for the ship to run into.
- inactive, on 10/31/2009, -2/+11Those Jewish brothers, I went to school with down the street? /oldest worst joke ever

- Zenkitten, on 10/31/2009, -5/+13This made me think of the Titanic ship, which then made me think of the movie, and then THAT made me think of the ***** song by Celine Dion. Now it's stuck in my head. >:[
Neeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrr, faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar, where eeeeeeeeeverrrrrrrrrrr youuuuuuuuu aaaaaaaarrrrrrrre - LargeStack, on 10/31/2009, -0/+8Holy Crap.
Did they use a first gen camera phone or an insta matic 110 for all those photos? - nikomo, on 10/31/2009, -0/+8The ship-building business is huge in Finland.
- medost, on 10/31/2009, -5/+11Titanic was also largest at that time ?
- biliabong6, on 10/31/2009, -0/+6if it fails, we will just spend billions of tax payer dollars to bring up from the bottom, give it a new captain, and tell all the passengers that their ticket prices have tripled to restructure the ship
- BigGooseX, on 10/31/2009, -1/+7it looks to be painted white, so not very green. :)
- EarlOfLade, on 10/31/2009, -0/+6In the Caribbean?
It's 87F here in Orlando at the moment, so I doubt they will encounter many... - bazzarr, on 10/31/2009, -1/+6Joey, you ever been in a cockpit before?
No sir, I've never been up in a plane before.
You ever seen a grown man naked? - biliabong6, on 10/31/2009, -4/+8Have you ever been on a real shrimp boat?
No, but I've been on a real big boat. - ifruit, on 10/31/2009, -2/+6That is an unsinkable ship.
- christoast, on 10/31/2009, -1/+5I won a ticket for this thing.
Full House, boys! - Goldcodpiece, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4Hooray for global warming!
- Zera, on 10/31/2009, -1/+5Wow, every gallon of fuel gets it 18 inches.
- FaithclubDotNet, on 10/31/2009, -0/+4That's the place that I want to be.
- JanTik, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3Its a law of nature. Here's how it works:
http://www.hyd-masti.com/2009/08/towboat-hits-brid ... - foxrun612, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3Yeah, but it has to sail across the Atlantic first to get to Florida.
- SquidLips, on 10/31/2009, -0/+3It look totally awesome and my son would spend the whole week exploring the nooks and crannies and still not get to them all.
We actually did a wonderful Cruise on a Holland America line the week after a hurricane. We had drinks with an off-duty Dutch officer of the ship and he noted how much fun the hurricane was! Those flat seas must get real boring...A ship as large as this one should cruise right through hurricanes.. - binaryloop, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3I went on a cruise and was talking to one of the crew members from Indonesia. They usually aren't allowed to get off the boat in port because they don't have visas or papers. They spend months a time onboard and work 6-7 days a week. Many make far less than minimum wage. He told me there is a sliding scale for pay that depends on where you are from. He said he was working on the ship to send money to his family. But, he missed his wife and children. It gave me a different perspective of the happy-looking crew member on these mega cruise ships. It seemed like it would be cool job: travel the world, go to fun destinations, and wait on people who are on vacation. But, the impression that I got is that they're basically indentured servants for 4-5 months at a time. They do get paid. But, they earn every penny of it.
- Braxo, on 10/31/2009, -1/+4I would like to see one of the graphs that has the silhouettes of large things to compare their size.
In my mind, the Titanic is still the biggest ship ever built, and I think it's time for me to learn if that's still true. - tenardier, on 10/31/2009, -1/+4http://www.oasisoftheseas.com/
the ship is pretty big. Overall the outside design I was expecting more. Looks like a floating factory. from the pictures I would have to say pretty ugly. Maybe the biggest but by far one of the ugliest. - blondcat, on 10/31/2009, -0/+3Sounds like an awesome ship. Lets hope the maiden voyage goes well.
- bizzywho, on 10/31/2009, -1/+4Yes, I know it's a fair question...if this was an article about religion.
Everyone knows that an anonymous dude/Billy Zane said that quote before the maiden voyage of the Titanic.
I understand that atheists don't believe in a god, but please don't act stupid by asking "which god?" - seanof, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2A bigger ship was launched a year after the Titanic was. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Imperator
- Sil369, on 10/31/2009, -1/+3environmentalists pollute the air with their complaining
- dancantone, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2And when it's in decommission it will be used as an offshore penitentiary.
- therealrico, on 10/31/2009, -2/+4RTFA
- freonchill, on 10/31/2009, -1/+3"While environmentalists have said that the ship does not do enough to reduce air pollution and burns more fuel than a land-based resort, engineers at shipbuilder STX Finland said environmental considerations played an important part in planning the vessel. It dumps no sewage into the sea, reuses its waste water and consumes 25 percent less power than similar, but smaller, cruise liners."
that says nothing about:
the materials used for manufacture
on/off ship recycling programs in place
12,000 plants, any used for food/spices/etc
sustainablility
etc
(ps, i did read the article, i found its commentary on "green" to be lacking, why i made the comment) - gasoline, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%A4rtsil%C3%A4
Engines are also made by the Finns. : ) - biliabong6, on 10/31/2009, -1/+3It was in the New York Post today. And they actually had to dredge some channels so it could leave the port.
- enclaved, on 10/31/2009, -1/+3HELSINKI – It's five times larger than the Titanic
The first words of the article...
That's all I'm saying - bazzarr, on 10/31/2009, -1/+3This needs to be powered by anti-matter.
- tenardier, on 10/31/2009, -1/+3http://www.oasisoftheseas.com/
- sensor, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2That's what she said?
- bizzywho, on 10/31/2009, -4/+6Seriously? C'mon dude.
- dakbonsa, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STX_Europe
"... is the largest shipbuilding group in Europe and the fourth largest in the world"
uhh yea sure. - gasoline, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2"Baltic Ferries" are pretty big, they sure aren't some rebuilt fishing boats.
Just take a look at two of the Tallink's newest additions to their fleet (both built in Finland):
