- lazycat, on 06/25/2008, -7/+68This is just a shot episode from the fantastic video report - Mogadishu Madness: http://current.com/items/76377322_mogadishu_madnes ... A true example of high quality journalism offering a balanced view on the event often at the cost of risking their own lifes.
Also see their special reports - Survival in Somalia: http://current.com/items/86988851_survival_in_soma ... - cr250guy, on 06/25/2008, -6/+58They were saying the guns were 150 etc.. but I'm sure they were trying to rip off those obviously wealthier americans. I'm sure if you're a Somalian you can get the gun for much cheaper which is even scarier because it means those machine guns are even more accessible.
- trumpydumpy, on 06/25/2008, -10/+58If only we could get rid of the guns the violence would stop!
/sarcasm - saunders45, on 06/25/2008, -3/+46Yeah, Guns are Somalia's problem. If they didn't have guns, they'd be hacking each other apart with swords and the like.
- SwedishNinja, on 06/25/2008, -12/+54"The NRA's got it wrong. Gun's don't kill people, AK-47s kill people!"
Stopped watching right there. You wouldn't think the violence in Somalia would have to do with almost zero government, centuries-old religious struggles, and crippling poverty that makes millions go hungry, would it? Oh, of course not, it's GOTTA be those evil, terrorist Ay Kay forty Sevens! - inactive, on 06/25/2008, -8/+49They wanted 400 for the folding stock AK-47 in the US you can find them for cheaper than that.
That guy is wrong, guns do no kill people, People kill people. - tjClassic82, on 06/25/2008, -3/+34This is crazy... the guide looked scared to death!
- sleepyweasel, on 06/25/2008, -1/+29I don't see the need for the anti-gun comments in the video - true its an open and unregulated gun market, but with 80% of the men in Somalia owning a gun, its a hell of a lot better situation than Darfur or other areas where genocide can't be defended against and oncoming slaughter is just an acceptable way of life.
The "Guns don't kill people, AK47s kill people" comment is where it goes from good journalism to opinion. By itself an Ak won't kill anyone and if someone is determined enough to kill, then the lack of an AK isn't going to stop them. But in the hands of someone defending his/her life, an AK47 can be used to defend against evil people just like it can be used to kill good people.
And semi-auto AK's are going up in price over here in the US - they're now between $400 and $600. - 3style, on 06/25/2008, -6/+29A bunch of over hyped nonsense, if people don't have guns they just use knifes. Because we all know there was complete peace in the world before the gun hit the scene. /sarcasm
- oderdigg, on 06/25/2008, -5/+27I wondered why they ducked? Clearly the RPG is unloaded.
- cybrguy, on 06/25/2008, -2/+21The journalists seemed to be purely anti-gun as well. They have a lot of violence here, and a lot of guns, that MUST mean more guns = more violence. Oh. We have more guns per capita than they do? Man, America is probably the most dangerous place in the world!
Here is the prime example of what happens when a country gives EVERY man a gun... ..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1566715.stm - Barackalypse, on 06/25/2008, -0/+18If the people in Somalia don't protect themselves, who is going to? The government, the warlords, the UN? Those are the very forces the people need protection from. Look to Darfur and Rwanda to see what happens when one group of people is unarmed and the rest aren't.
- zelkuta, on 06/25/2008, -5/+21I am I the only who thinks those "Journalist" were being complete Jackasses and making fools of themselves?
- LastDitchHero, on 06/25/2008, -1/+16Wow, glad to see someone else thought that. I mean these people are fighting over resources such as food, clean water, and who knows what other basic human needs. If it wasn't AK-47s they would still be fighting with whatever they could get their hands on if was sticks or stones.
- cnot3, on 06/25/2008, -2/+15I also turned it off when he fed the camera that *****. I'm sure those Somalians weren't selling those guns legally, but since there is no law over there, its irrelevant. The problem is lawlessness, not Kalashnikovs.
- jpstanle, on 06/25/2008, -0/+11A pretty cool video to watch, but their 'message' is completely whacked.
Guns don't create instability; it is massive power vacuums that develop when European colonial powers rapidly withdrawal from underdeveloped nations that do that. The small arms markets in these places developed because of instability, not the other way around. Africa has been a total mess ever since colonial powers withdrew virtually overnight without putting any replacement power structure in place. - fakekevinrose, on 06/25/2008, -1/+12Not needed
- skratchnerd, on 06/25/2008, -1/+12i think you mean machetes
- Ex3poo, on 06/25/2008, -0/+11I know where I'm buying my Christmas gifts from now on!
- VAXcat, on 06/25/2008, -0/+11 Semi auto AK-47 style rifles are pretty available in the US, it's true - althout a decent one would cost a bit more than $400.00. However, due to an Executive Order of President Bush the First, no new fully automatic weapons can be imported or owned by civilians in the US. That means any full auto weapon from before then , no matter how crappy the condition, is worth many many thousands of dollars and are hoarded by collectors. A full auto genuine AK-47, registerable and transferable via ATF rules, would cost a helluva lot more than $400.00 in the States...
- diespectra, on 06/25/2008, -5/+16For guns being so evil and dangerous, he looked pretty safe there... It only got dangerous when he started acting like a self righteous douche bag in front of a camera that he put himself in danger.
All I got from this video is that the third world nation of Somalia is more free than the United States. - dblespresso, on 06/25/2008, -0/+9Normally the Somali warlords have to kidnap westerners at sea, this doesnt seem bright
- freezerburn666, on 06/25/2008, -4/+13the idea stems from the fact that you never point a gun at something you don't intend to kill. whether a gun is loaded or not, because there are times when bullets can jam, etc. it seemed like a normal reaction to whether it had a round in it or not.
- flibuste, on 06/25/2008, -3/+12Patronizing "journalists" coming from a country where owning a gun is "in the constitution", who show us how bad selling guns can be for a country.
Are the AK-47 that expensive in the USA?
Sincerely, some people missed the opportunity to look at themselves before commenting on others. - inactive, on 06/25/2008, -1/+9Awesome gun market, its a shame I had to sit through ***** propaganda to watch it though. AK 47s DO NOT kill people, they do not shoot themselves, dont blame the gun, *****. Theyre under anarchy because western governments need them destabilized so they can get their resources easier. Any noble black leader that wears a suit would be killed if they rose there under orders from the cabal. The other 20% of families that dont own guns should get them asap IMO.
- bluenash, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8It's all fun and games until someone gets decapitated.
- GuinnyIre, on 06/25/2008, -3/+11If we could only get rid of the guns and put ourselves and the lives and futures of our families in a happy friendly government. Look at the utopias that Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and numerous other heads of states brought to their people. Somalia's govt just wants to do good and I'm surprised that the people don't want to put their lives in the hands of it. Now pass the doobie!
- GMofOLC, on 06/25/2008, -0/+8Dugg for the same guy who tried to sell them something at every stand.
- squarepegs, on 06/25/2008, -10/+18These guys are true gutsy journalists, going to an extremely hostile place in order to show the rest of us another culture. AK-47's there are $150 a piece, and one guy offered to sell him an RPG launcher for $150. The seller even points the RPG launcher at the journalists in order to show off how cool you look when holding one... at 3:46 you can see the camera man duck while the crowd laughs.
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7If living in a country like Somalia it is better to have 100% of the population owning guns. If only 25 or 50% of the people owned guns it would be a massacre.
- personalj, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7I've never seen a true AK-47 for sale, I've seen AK style rifle which was a class III item in action, but they're very difficult to buy due to the NFA.
- Narrator, on 06/25/2008, -3/+10Yeah look at Columbia. They have a ban on guns but it has the highest murder rate in the world of any country not at war. The guy does the typical American douche thing of going into a complicated situation like the Somali civil war and framing it in terms of a U.S political issue like gun control. He doesn't know the history of the country, the clans, the religious conflicts, the history of conflict with the Ethiopians, etc.
- cnot3, on 06/25/2008, -2/+9You don't need to reload a machete.
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -2/+9Kind of a retarded argument. It's full of anti-gun *****. I can go down 10 miles or so and pick up many different kinds of arms, ak-47, ar-15, mother ***** has a minigun, A MINIGUN!!!! in the gun store, it probably has like some missing part and that's how he can sell it but how hard would it be to get the part online? My guess, not hard.
;-)
The problem is most likely in the corrupt governments and/or lunatic religions and not because people own guns.
Dudes got balls though, lucky he isn't dead in a garbage dump or something. - Digger1218, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7Nice conventional wisdom. Modern M16's are quite reliable and supremely accurate in the hands of a skilled shooter.
- mjl5629, on 06/25/2008, -2/+9Those suburban kids were just dumb enough to go screwing around in a third world country like its Disneyland. They were giggling about ak's like a couple HS cheerleaders.
- dblespresso, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7Pakistan's Gun Market:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9xf62PKC5M - dinostabOMG, on 06/25/2008, -1/+7Haha. I like how they needed him to tell them when it was time to leave - the crowd of dozens of people staring at them in a market full of guns, with one crazy guy following them around and pointing a weapon at their faces, that wasn't enough of a hint? I'm glad they got this footage, but maybe sometimes we Americans do deserve our reputation abroad.
- Trigonometron, on 06/25/2008, -1/+7They knew that they could ask higher, foreigners have money. Besides, bartering is expected in markets like that, I bet the guns go for something like $50
- iloveliberals, on 06/25/2008, -4/+10Yeah, the two guys were so, like, hip and happenin, ya know? I could really feel that valley vibe, like high quality unbiased journalism.
I got chills, man, chills. - WebCester, on 06/26/2008, -0/+5I'm sick and tired of everybody using Switzerland as an example. I'm Swiss, and I have a fully automatic assault rifle in my closet right now. However, I can not legally buy ammo, and if I ever use the gun in a situation that doesn't involve a foreign army invading, I will be severely punished. Also note that the linked article is from 2001. We no longer give out ammo to all soldiers and there have been countless discussions and proposed laws about the feasibility of keeping guns at home instead of at the garrisons.
A little known fact is that we have one of the highest suicide-by-gun rates in the world as well. - iloveliberals, on 06/25/2008, -2/+7What policies would prevent people from killing people?
- VAXcat, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5 Most semi auto versions of assault rifles have substantial differences internally - usually takes some pretty accurate machining and a goodly slug of parts to do the conversion well. Doing it poorly, especially in semi auto versions that fire from a closed bolt instead of firing from an oipen bolt, can be dangerous (ie, inadvertent "cookoffs" from retained heat).
- S7aind, on 06/25/2008, -5/+10That was one of the best pieces of journalism I've seen. Definitely worth a watch
- personalj, on 06/25/2008, -1/+6In Africa, yes you can, there is no police there.
- anemptygun, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5I wish we would follow their lead.
- Chrissilvanet, on 06/25/2008, -2/+7These guys who run/host "current_" are a bunch of lose cannons, they seem to get all this funding to go to all these crazy places and the best they come up with is barely worth seeing. Seems like someone invested in a couple of journalism students and they create a mediocre mid-grade project out of what they were handed. This is not ground breaking journalism or anything special. I'd like to see them not just dip in and dip out of every scene they encounter, they look like tourists in this piece, that's why people were crowding around them.
- jpmulli, on 06/25/2008, -0/+5I'm sure that if suddenly all the guns disappeared from Mogadishu all the violence would stops and everyone would suddenly get along. LOL...All you would have then would be headless bodies laying around after being attacked with machetes. Note* Better ban machetes too, and axes, and knives and clubs and sticks and hoes and rakes and spears and......oh don't forget rocks and bottles.
