- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -11/+66Good luck finding a job in any of these places.
- deva14, on 03/25/2009, -5/+56Geez, you're right, there ARE no jobs in Australia or New Zealand, are there? Those poor, impoverished countries on the upside down part of the world. I wonder how they survive. Hunter-gatherers, still? That must be it.
- cptmichael101st, on 03/26/2009, -0/+32darn. i've GOT to stop reading articles based on the picture...
- novoare, on 03/25/2009, -3/+30I'd buy any of these if I had that kind of money. And as for finding a job (in response to mkesbaker)-- work digitally.
- ianmack, on 03/25/2009, -1/+22Wow - it would be interesting to also add the cost of living information for each. Not only are the houses cheaper, I bet day to day is much cheaper as well.
- TomJL, on 09/10/2009, -0/+21http://rorr.im/digg.com/travel_places/what_can_150 ...
- joerod, on 03/26/2009, -0/+21$150k can buy you a basement closet in new york city
- manbeef, on 03/26/2009, -0/+17hah. hilarious. In my small south-western BC town of 16,000, $150k can buy you..... ***** all.
- OrangeTide, on 03/26/2009, -0/+15Finding a job in these places where you can support yourself to a standard of living you are accustomed to might be tough. And for australia and new zealand, it might be hard to get a job there as a foreigner. Or at least fairly complicated to get one. Foreigners need permissions to work in most rich countries.
- borez, on 03/26/2009, -0/+15Damn it, there isn't even a Google cache up either.
FTR: In London $150K will get you absolutely nothing. - ortucis, on 03/26/2009, -0/+14*looks at Digg comments*
Well.. - tavallai, on 03/26/2009, -0/+14That'll buy you about a thousand houses in Detroit.
- badqat, on 03/26/2009, -0/+13Sex sells...silly.
- ybotoby, on 03/26/2009, -0/+13Kisses apparently
- Paranoidmarvin, on 03/26/2009, -1/+14Will $150k buy a good sever somewhere in the world?
- mrstone, on 03/25/2009, -4/+17Now I'm thinking about leaving the US. These places are fantastic.
- Frezzle, on 03/26/2009, -1/+12A better server!
- Gemfinder, on 03/26/2009, -0/+11Yeesh, $150K in San Francisco?
You'd get a walk-in closet
In the Tenderloin.
For about six months. - davidmiller72, on 03/25/2009, -2/+12one key place i realize was left out of here was the US. there are properties here for under 150k. alot of them nice suburban *****.
- handler, on 03/26/2009, -0/+10In California 150k will buy you a rack in a datacenter.
- Asvetic, on 03/26/2009, -0/+10Does it buy an apartment with lesbian hookers? Is that what that photo attached is all about? Can't tell cause the server is down.
- clankster, on 03/26/2009, -0/+10As if. I bought my 400 square foot NYC apartment for 220K in 2002, and just sold it (in the midst of this horrible real estate climate) for just under 400K.
$150K will buy you a large ziplock bag. - CTK14A, on 03/26/2009, -1/+10Not bad choices for retirement though.
- techstar25, on 03/26/2009, -2/+11In Zurich right now, 150k would buy you three banks and all their assets. ;)
- DeathRay2K, on 03/26/2009, -0/+9I wonder what kind of web server 150k would buy around the world? You'd think a decent one...
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -1/+9Australia or New Zealand wouldn't be too tough but you would want to start out with a bunch of money or secure a job first. Most of the other places would be tough to find a job that could support a $125,000 house.
- CTK14A, on 03/26/2009, -0/+8Where's the ethical dilemma? They're happy, you're happy.
- drmangrum, on 03/26/2009, -2/+9Some are, some aren't. You have to keep in mind they cherry picked locations, so of course they look perfect. You have to also think about WHY the land and housing is so cheap. Some of those places don't exactly have the most forgiving weather, some are geologically unstable, some are politically unstable.
I'm guess what I'm saying is, you have to look at the big picture. There are places in America you can get a nice home for 150,000 too, you just have to live in the middle of nowhere. There are reasons people are willing to pay high prices and there are reasons why some places are priced dirt cheap. Those reasons have to be explored. - nesagwa, on 03/26/2009, -0/+7For less than 50k you can get the same thing on a half acre.
Dont pay that much to live in a trailer park please. - pathouston22, on 03/26/2009, -0/+7Depends where you live. 150k in Texas can buy you some really nice stuff. Hell I just bought 2 acres of beautiful heavily forested land 5 miles from a lake for less than 7k.
- JCEEZ, on 03/26/2009, -0/+7yea but you wouldn't be living in a $150,000 house. Trust me, I taught in Japan. You don't exactly get paid a lot.
- CedEx, on 03/26/2009, -0/+7Rob a bank - go wherever you want?!
Whoa. Slow down there buddy. You'll probably only want to go places that don't have extradition policies. - drmobutu, on 03/26/2009, -2/+9Yeah, America is still the BEST borderline dysfunctional country...
- SecretChief, on 03/26/2009, -0/+6yeah, that or a whole city block in Detroit
- o6uoq, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7http://rorr.im/digg.com/travel_places/what_can_150 ...
- arkwald, on 03/26/2009, -0/+6That is because people working in New York took the wages they made there and commute to where the real estate was cheaper. It is good for the first generation to do it but as you see, eventually people pick up on that trick and price accordingly. So people go further and further out to get those good deals. For example the highest population growth in Pa. (practically the only place it is positive) is in 2 counties up in the Poconos. Why would people want to move to some backwater hills? Because I-80 runs right through there and it is a 2 hour drive to NYC from that point.
I think the funny thing is people are willing to spend a full 1/6th of their day commuting, 1/3rd at work and God knows what for the remainder. It is almost like to get the trappings of success they sacrifice almost every moment they could use to enjoy it. - ArgieArgerstein, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7Maybe this will get the middle class (in the U.S.) thinking internationally. How could that be bad? Now how do I make $150K?
- RumpleForeskin3, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5web server joke
- AbbasJin, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5I didn't know the U.S. had 100% employment rate.
- HuskyPuzzle, on 03/26/2009, -0/+51st on the list! BA here I come. I was paying $45/month for an incredible apartment San Telmo, Buenos Aires in 2004. It makes me want to cry that I didn't round up $45K and buy that place 5 years ago. The market has doubled since then..
- tyrulz, on 03/26/2009, -1/+6You just added to the stupidity jerkoff
- s73v3r, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5Agreed. If you wanna bump that up to maybe 200k, you could get a whole bunch of land in the Black Hills. Only thing to worry about would be forest fire season though. But its still a great place.
- jakamahaka, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5MIRROR?
- astyguy, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5at least you might have fast internet access ....
- theutopian, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5I live in a large town outside a major metropolitan area (Chicago). You can score a 3 bedroom house, some almost 150 years old for $125k. Far from the middle of no where.
- nephilimx, on 03/26/2009, -1/+5"it might be hard to get a job there as a foreigner. Or at least fairly complicated to get one. Foreigners need permissions to work in most rich countries."
All you need is a skilled visa, which 50,000 people get each year in Australia. Its like the American green card "lotto" scam but not a scam, just need to show you finished high school and what job you are skilled in. Anything from IT to plumber. - EarlOfLade, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4There is nothing borderline about USA, it is dysfunctional.
- bincoder, on 03/26/2009, -1/+53 br 2 bath for $150k?
Im in one of those and it isnt worth anything near $150k
Try that divided by two (which would be a stretch itself).
A city of over 2 million, in the sunbelt, in the USA.
And yes, I do still have a job. - christinegarvin, on 03/25/2009, -3/+7It is interesting to see--with such clarity--the discrepancies in economic wealth throughout the world. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area leaves me with little doubt that I will never own a home, much less one that looks like any of these. Would it be ethical for those of us who could afford it to go to these places and buy these homes, though?
