- SoCalDissident, on 07/16/2009, -8/+97I am generally not a Wal-Mart fan and I always try to shop somewhere else, even when it costs a little more.
That said... feel free to digg me down, but... I can't count how many times I've been working on some project late and night and ran out to wallyworld cause I needed something and nothing else was open. It's hard to argue (and compete with) a store that has almost everything and is open almost all the time... - mogebier, on 07/16/2009, -15/+88"OH MY, LAWDY HEP ME, I BE LOSTIN IN DA WAL-MART"
Seriously. An old lady thought she would get lost?
How do some people remember to breathe and eat?
Morons. - easyperson, on 07/17/2009, -6/+53No, the American consumer has made a choice. They have placed convenience and cost above the value of shopping at a small local store. The Waltons were simply smart enough to recognize this shift and cater to the changing demands. Also, since when has a business not tried to make money? Calling Walmart execs greedy because they try to turn a profit is ludicrous.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -5/+34so do you boycott all the supermarkets and gas stations that stay open on thanksgiving? did you ever think that maybe the people working there had no problem with a day of getting paid (possibly even holiday pay) to sit around and be lazy for a day instead of the usual, dealing with walmart customers all day? when they started working at walmart they knew the place doesnt ever close, they made a choice. boycotting the place they work at isnt going to help them any.
- thoughtsonthis, on 07/17/2009, -10/+35Why is it greed? Many people who can't afford supermarket prices now are very happy for the chance to buy food for less to feed their families. Wal-Mart know this. Are they more greedy than let's say the Acme food chain. They were selling one cucumber for $2.00 each one week.
- RealmDown, on 07/17/2009, -3/+23In your dedication, I see you gave up humor in favor of bragging and arrogance.
- footbag01, on 07/17/2009, -2/+20Walmart litters giant buildings everywhere they go. In my area, there are three unused old Walmart buildings.
- Elpants, on 07/17/2009, -4/+22Former Wal-mart employee here.
I worked in the electronics department last summer between college semesters, because they were the only place hiring in my small hometown. I went in there yesterday to pick up some fuel injection cleaner for my car ($3 compared to ~$8 at an auto-parts store, for the same brand). I decided to say hi to some of the people I used to work with in the electronics department while I was there (Which was being renovated to allow a much bigger electronics selection to hopefully compete with Best Buy.) I must say of all the retail jobs I have had, Wal-Mart was the most enjoyable, I was treated good, had great benefits even though they knew I was only working there for 3 months. Not to mention they paid me more by the hour ($2 an hour MORE than I was asking on applications) than any of the small retailers I have worked for.
The job I have now, I choose my own hours and days I work...if I want to work at all. But I kinda wish I would have just gone back to Wal-Mart for another summer, they pay more and treat me better.
Wal-Mart doesn't suck, it's the customers that come in on weekends that do. - caseycoold, on 07/17/2009, -6/+21Stopped shopping there a long time ago. Not many better options, but at least it's not a Walmart.
- hazello, on 07/17/2009, -8/+23Wal mart makes a huge deal about 'low prices', but I don't for instance, find their prices are any lower than my local food coop, or target, or many other small reasonable stores.
This idea about people 'saving money' there also ignores economics.
When Wal-Mart moves into your town, many small business have less money or even close. So, what happens? They're shipping all of the profits out of town and to China. Then, EVERYONE in town has LESS money. Who cares if you're 'saving money' when you have less of it to start with?? - xsecretfiles, on 07/17/2009, -0/+14"Customers wait outside the doors for the 7:30 a.m. grand opening of the new Walmart Supercenter in the Levittown Town Center in Tullytown Wednesday. WHY?
Yes I read the article, still...WHY? - mandraque, on 07/17/2009, -2/+16dauchbag.
- PecanHead, on 07/17/2009, -3/+16Have you ever shopped at a "small local store"?
* They have limited hours.
* They have limited selection.
* They are invariably staffed with the store owner's relatives that know nothing about the products.
* Checkout takes forever.
I use Walmart like I use Amazon. I know what I want when I go there, I get it, and I get the hell out. No muss, no fuss.
Why am I supposed to hate Walmart again? Seriously. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -2/+15If everyone is so intent on calling Wal-Mart evil, why do they still shop there? They don't force smaller stores to go out of business, the customers do.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -21/+33im sorry but hating walmart for business practices etc is kind of absurd, they are a business just like any other. they offer their employees a competitive wage and good benefits and they offer the consumer a decent product at a low price. if other stores cant compete than so be it, this america, we are capitalist, thats the way it works. if you dont like walmart because of the people, or the layout of the store, or some other trivial ***** than just say so. otherwise, hating walmart is just trendy. get over it.
- alep85, on 07/17/2009, -10/+21To amazingkreskin:
"they offer their employees a competitive wage and good benefits"
Since when? My dad is a lead mechanic for a supermarket chain around here, and he makes nearly TWICE what the average Wal-Mart mechanic would make. While their wage may be slightly competitive, they slash overtime, thus capping how hard a person can work to try and feed their family.
"if other stores cant compete than so be it, this america, we are capitalist, thats the way it works."
Again, this is true, but the field that Wal-Mart is playing on isn't fair. They demand tax breaks everywhere they setup a store, and most municipal govt's give them this thinking that it will boost the local economy (when Wal-Mart really just takes that revenue from local stores). Not only that, but they use predatory pricing (slashing prices in a market to below cost to drive out competitors) to wrestle control of a local market. That's not capitalism, not when you have a tax advantage over your competitors.
I'm all about finding great prices, just not when the company uses unfair and unjust ways of creating those low prices. - papashawn, on 07/17/2009, -0/+11I bet 90% of the self-righteous ***** bashing Wal-Mart on this thread shop at Target, which is just as guilty of everything people accuse Wal-Mart of.
- borez, on 07/17/2009, -3/+14I for one will not welcome our new Chinese Overlords bought and paid for by the likes of Wal-Mart and such.
- Spamcan, on 07/17/2009, -3/+14What about movie theaters which stay open every single day including christmas? I've worked in theaters for years and I always take holiday shifts for the easy extra cash. They're earning time and a half, maybe even double on those days. Wal-Mart is not the evil conglomerate most people make it out to be, if that bothers you so much maybe you just want to hate them to make yourself feel better.
- arraz, on 07/17/2009, -5/+15Just fyi. The Waltons no longer run walmart. Mike Duke (CEO) and H. Lee Scott (current Executive Chairman, CEO from 2000-20098) are the two bastards running the world. The Waltons only have a small voting power.
- derherr, on 07/17/2009, -1/+10"Welcome to Costco, I love you."
- moothemagiccow, on 07/17/2009, -1/+10now it's more about the impression of low prices than actual low prices. Once you eliminate your competition, it's not necessary to compete
- UnFriendlyFire, on 07/17/2009, -2/+10You have to break the mirror in the back of the store, next to the TV's.
- RealmDown, on 07/17/2009, -8/+16Morans*
(This is Digg; know your meme's.) - SillyRabbits, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8They were probably holding grand opening sales and promotions. Just like most other stores do... It's the same reason people line up for Black Friday specials.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8I go there to learn to speak Spanish.
- falconear, on 07/17/2009, -2/+9Paying their employees more than the competition? The hell you say...Walmart pays their employees jack *****, gives no benefits because almost everybody is part time, and have the nerve to suggest that their employees take advantage of local social services in their community instead of providing any benefits or a living wage.
How do you think they can offer those great deals? From the sweatshops to the underpaid checkout person, the Walmart legacy is built on a pile of bones. - BorsKaegel, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7Next up: motorized carts for everyone! You think old people are dangerous behind the wheel of a CAR...
- borez, on 07/17/2009, -2/+9Some people don't have family you know.
- megaton, on 07/17/2009, -1/+8And cars have destroyed the carriage industry!
Goddamn you, cars! - protogenxl, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7"Welcome to Quicker stop, home of both convenience and quality only, quicker. Plus a selection of high end adult magazines. While you're here, shop at our best seller department complete with its own coffee bar. Or drop by our music shop also with its own coffee bar. Or perhaps you'd rather visit our international coffee bar complete with its own little book department which has its own super teeny tiny coffee bar inside. And a selection of tiny adult magazines. And finally, as you enter the hall of mirrors, you might notice, you're not alone. For you see, I'm shopping with you."
-Leonardo Leonardo - otbeverly, on 07/17/2009, -2/+8So your job requires a wizard hat?
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/text/bloodninja - fury420, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6the same tub of potato/macaroni salad that Wal-Mart sells for $3.50 is $5.50 at the Superstore, $6 something at safeway/saveon/etc... and $7.50+ at local chains. All regular daily prices, not sales.
granted, my example is only two items, but I thought it quite surprising when I noticed - illDecree, on 07/17/2009, -2/+8@mogebier:
Guess what? Half of us fit the same description as you! Hell, I'd be willing to be there is a large percentage of the Digg community that has a more promising career, that probably pays a bit more than yours does.
Judging by your comment history, you should maybe do a little self reflection and quit being an arrogant *****.
BTW: aye can stihl talk liek dis, w/o propr speach an' gramer n stihl not sirv fryes
*****' douchecanoe. - EvinKaless, on 07/17/2009, -3/+9I love when people say, "Well Wal-Mart has low prices, and it's convenient." Well their prices better be cheap because all the manufacturing employees that used to make a decent wage and are now making minimum wage or are on welfare can't afford anything. I challenge you to find anything in those dumps that isn't made in China. F**K Wal-Mart.
- joshuaer, on 07/17/2009, -3/+8I guess it depends on your location, me i hate the place but even if i liked it i would have to drive 10 miles to get to one. no wal-marts in the city of minneapolis at least now around uptown.
I know in some places it is the only place to go or like you said it is late and they are open. but with a little planing you should be able to avoid the place. - Atario, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5"they offer their employees a competitive wage and good benefits"
O RLY?
http://wakeupwalmart.com/facts/
Maybe you meant "competitive" in the sense that they are competing to see how low they can drive wages and benefits.
"they offer the consumer a decent product"
C'mon, you're just trolling now. They're notorious for selling z-grade crap from third-world slave-labor sweatshops.
Now let's get right to it: are you in their corporate middle management, or are you store-level? - JordanTW90, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5But Target is more expensive, it has to be better.
- otbeverly, on 07/17/2009, -2/+7Translated: I got really pissed off when Wal-Mart made me work on Thanksgiving Day.
- TheAngryMob, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6They're not called morons. They're called Wal-Mart customers.
- otbeverly, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5That ride sucks!
- highpitch83, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5Thank you! That was my only question: Who the ***** waits outside walmart at 7:30 in the morning just to "explore"?!
IT'S A ***** CONCRETE AND ALUMINUM BOX FULL OF SUB-STANDARD MERCHANDISE WHAT IS THERE TO LOOK AT?!?! - fury420, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4hey, I know where that is, I got my law degree two aisles over!
- jeepnut24, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5At least someone is creating jobs... Our government can't say the same... Im sure most people would rather work than not.
- fury420, on 07/17/2009, -2/+6don't employees get either 50% or 100% more pay when working a Stat. holiday?
I dunno about you, but when theres two or more people working in a family, and they have the option to work thanksgiving it'd make a hellofa lot more financial sense celebrating thanksgiving the day before, the day after, etc... and have them all bring home double pay - TheNik, on 07/17/2009, -4/+8@mogebier: Mostly you're just an *****, though.
- KSUdesigner, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Other companies don't leave empty buildings behind when they close down? I fail to see why Wal-Mart should be held to a different standard than any other business.
