- EarthernJar, on 02/19/2009, -0/+84Mind the gap! No London tube? That's surprising.
- Pseudorious, on 02/19/2009, -3/+53Visit Asian cities. It'll become rapidly apparent why the NYC subway is an abomination.
- likeyehokwhatev, on 02/19/2009, -0/+36One every 10 minutes, 24/7, on every line?
In your mass transit dreams... - timothy53, on 02/19/2009, -13/+48i could never understand why people knock on the NYC subway. Yes it smells and there are rats everywhere, but there is one every 10 minutes 24/7 on every line. You cant beat that, oh and its only 2.00 bucks a ride anywhere in the city.
- Snoogs, on 02/19/2009, -2/+32I like how Chicago has the most expensive fares, and we are still on the brink of shutting down public trans because it costs too much to operate... Someone's pockets are getting fat... Chicago politics FTW.
- chris4404, on 02/19/2009, -0/+23These people remind me of SimTower.
- yuanzhoulu, on 02/19/2009, -0/+21the NYC system transportation efficiency is fine. what most people complain about is that it's (1) dark and dirty, (2) really bumpy. most East Asian and European subway systems are clean and well-lit and run very smoothly -- you should have no problem standing up without holding onto anything. Asian subways are also rapidly progressing and converting to the glass-door sort of platform which is much safer and prevents many fatal accidents in those crowded cities. if you don't know what i mean, see:

- wolfing, on 02/19/2009, -0/+20I like Mexico City's ride fare (.14).
- JtodaTizzle, on 02/19/2009, -0/+19"Most-rided". Brilliant.
- voldron, on 02/19/2009, -1/+19They forgot London!!!!!
- Cern001, on 02/19/2009, -0/+15I agree. Though to be fair to NYC if mass transit were a viable option in my area, such as in NYC, I wouldn't even own a car. Even with it's flaws it's still beyond awesome.
The only mass transit I've used outside of US is Tokyo so my comparison is limited. But using that as the gold standard, NYC has a lot of work to catch up. The Tokyo system is scary efficient. The workers were helpful too. The Engrish on the schedule wasn't all that great but when I was staring at it looking overwhelmed (the thing goes freaking everywhere) a nice lady came over to help me figure out which line I needed. Between the signs, her broken Enlish and my broken Japanese we figured out which line I needed to use to get to Kofu. Wonderfully nice people, it's probably skewing my perception of the transit system itself to be honest. - nuance2k5, on 02/19/2009, -1/+16I agree, this list should include London and possibly other cities like Beijing and Shanghai.
- jarjarwang, on 02/19/2009, -0/+14Only a small fraction of Chicago's is really a subway though...
- Sternology, on 02/19/2009, -0/+13if you concentrate, the line map of the NY subway system looks like fido dido doing his ironing
- AmaDaden, on 02/19/2009, -2/+15The NYC subway system is on of the oldest in the world. Chances are they have such great systems because they learned from our mistakes.
- skersh, on 02/19/2009, -1/+13I'd be embarrassed to see the TTC up there. Such a ***** system.
Waiting 40 minutes for the 506 streetcar, only to have 5 show up at once? Awesome. I guess the subways themselves aren't terrible, but only being open till 1 or 1:30 is a freaking joke. - Afronick, on 02/19/2009, -0/+11Maybe this has something to do with Japan's ride count:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MAjCwEl5EA - npcabral, on 02/19/2009, -0/+11Also, and this is no joke, I have on several occasions seen people take ***** on the train, pee on the train, and even jerk off on the train. Nothing like getting home late. I wish they'd unlock some of the doors between the cars.
- novicechap, on 02/19/2009, -1/+12Actually the Mumbai suburban is the most efficient of all railway networks in the world. It is designed to carry only 500 people, but always ends up having 5000 on board.
- PawtucketPat, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10Footlong?
- Klak, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10this graph needs a key
- rsvguy, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10The London underground has 270 stations and over 250 miles of track making it the longest metro system in the world.
London has the oldest underground railway in the world (first line opened 1863) and they left it out. Unbelievable! - alexmuller, on 02/19/2009, -0/+101.1 billion in 2007, with an average increase of 7% per year making it almost 1.2 billion. And Paris had 1.39... so close.
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/media/newscentre/a ... - BobAlmightyX, on 02/19/2009, -1/+10I've ridden on three (Washinton D.C., Chicago, Tyokyo) of the train systems listed in the chart, as well as several others that aren't (London, Hamburg, Amsterdam). I'd say that the biggest difference between the US and the rest of the world is perception. It seems that there is some sort of stigma against public transportation. Your car is a symbol of your "independence" and wealth. I never once got that feeling while ridding a mass-transit in Europe or Tokyo. In fact, after living in Tokyo for several months and then returning to the States, I found that having a car made me feel LESS independent. Paying for gas, paying for maintenance, insurance, waiting in traffic. My commute in Tokyo was longer, but felt less stressful. My commute in the US is shorter, and I feel like beating someone to death with a half-eaten bean burrito at least once a week.
- quomen, on 02/19/2009, -4/+13The only thing that stinks more than New York's subways is the Knicks.
- Pseudorious, on 02/19/2009, -0/+9So more people per capita ride the subway in places where it doesn't smell like sewage?
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8I take the subway every day in NYC. I take the 7 for a bit, than the N/W when i moved to Astoria and than F and E when i moved to Forest Hills. It sucks man... its always breaks down, the 7 is always late or broken... I don't even care about the cleanness, in fact i think very little New Yorkers does, we can care less if a bum is pissing in the corner next to you... but if more than 2 or 3 train passes in the opposite direction and your train still hasn't arrived yet, its an excuse to kill.
- artfiend77, on 02/19/2009, -1/+9Montreal? Toronto? Hmm...
- nobleexperiment, on 02/19/2009, -0/+7I could understand the omisisons of London's Underground and Berlin's U-bahn in the diagram because, what are they gonna compare their them to in the U.S.? The Los Angeles Subway to Hollywood and That's it! Philadelphia's SEPTA on the other hand would be as fair as the Berlin U-bahn and S-bahn.
I swear I ***** hate Los Angeles. When San Diego is making more progress in their public transporation projects than Los Angeles without the need of a subway, It's a good sign Los Angeles needs to implode to the Pacific Ocean. - calebian, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6Not much elbow room in Tokyo
- darwinwin, on 06/18/2009, -1/+7I came here to say the same ... also even with 5000 people on each ride .. it hardly misses the schedule ... even in the worst monsoon season ... its one of the most reliable modes of transportation
- Teej, on 02/19/2009, -2/+8More importantly...London, England?
- aflaks, on 02/19/2009, -1/+6If it weren't for all those signal failures at edgware road...

- whoartnow, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5I was wondering where London was.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Underground_st ...
Has it at about 1.3 billion rides annually.
(Yes yes I rounded them up and added them together, weed makes me technical and stuff) - oderdigg, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5FTL
- Humptydank, on 02/19/2009, -1/+6The subway's the only cheap thing about Moscow...It's an incredibly expensive city to live in.
- raydar, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5I disagree with conclusion of the article. If you look at rides/capita Wash. DC has the second highest rate of ridership and Boston is in fouth place. San Francisco has the lowest per capita ridership with only 67. Less than half the next lowest.
city rides/capita
Paris 661
DC 370
Tokyo 341
Boston 316
Moscow 245
Seoul 200
...
San Francisco 67 - yuanzhoulu, on 02/19/2009, -1/+6well, though i have to admit that it's nice to even *have* a 24 hour system. Shanghai's subway closes at 22:30, Singapore's at midnight, Boston's at 0:50, and almost all European subways at 23:00-01:00 at some point.
though on the other hand, i really hate having a 24-hour, 7-day work-sleep-work-sleep-work-eat-work-work lifestyle, which is really what makes the NYC system worth running at later hours, so if i had to take my pick, i'll take a 18-hour subway system and a relaxed lifestyle. - BobAlmightyX, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5I recognize those people silhouettes! SimTOWER!

- cornelje, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4The Taipei MRT has ranked #1 in the world for quality, safety and reliability, but also the most expensive in the world to build. Fares range from about .60 to 2.00 USD.
By far the most pleasant public transportation experience I have had. - ulmedas, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Too bad the NYC system is woefully underfunded. We subsidize the ***** out of highways, and completely ignore the subway systems that are vital to the city. The state avoids putting money to the system if they can help it at all, yet several million people per day use the system subsidized by the taxes of the city residents. Same for new jersey and Connecticut commuters. Once they reinstate the commuter tax, then it will be equitable again.
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -1/+5The TTC would have been there, but a flaming bag of crap would have hurt the aesthetic.
- DeathJux, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Maybe you missed the more than 400 miles of track on the NYC subway?
- oderdigg, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4and rubber tyres!
