- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -1/+17They should be careful, Dubai is having big budget problems right now. I guess they hit some kind of crazy urban scheme bubble.

- MCA2142, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12Not one supply depot or a pylon in these pictures...
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11Dubai is extremely sensitive to the global economy. If things slow down too much people will avoid traveling there since it is expensive. Not to mention there is still a feeling a religiosity that makes westerners uncomfortable.
- IcedKasz, on 01/13/2009, -1/+11Highways will be covered with Creep. Airports will be flanked by missile turrets. All gov't memos will end with "GG"
-KE - hamobu, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9Hopefully this project gets beyond "illustrator on acid" stage.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8I lol'd
- astutissimo, on 01/13/2009, -0/+7Astute observation. South Korea GDP to drop 5% after Starcraft 2 launch.
- sexybobo, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6you should have gone with something more funny like

Showing the reality of the situation is just depressing - sangjmoon, on 01/13/2009, -1/+6This is all the better to play Starcraft with.
- chrissku, on 01/13/2009, -0/+4Visions of North Korea. Look at how bad things are there. This is a great video.

- korea, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3@ElDiablo6870, alright internet tough-guy, I would in no way call you a smart anything. Feel better, sweetie?
- korea, on 01/13/2009, -2/+5Palestine too huh. The South Korean government will cease to exist and be replaced by a paramilitary terrorist organization? Really?
Also, -1ing you for making an unprovoked political comment not at all related to the article. - TracerMan, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3sunken colony will be build on in the North Korea South Korean boarder.
- ElDiablo6870, on 01/13/2009, -4/+7You would think S. Korea could now afford to maintain is own border with N.Korea.
- isukeyo, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Every country and every major city in the world has "tech crazed" urban planners doing "out of this world" schemes for future cities. This isn't news, or even noteworthy. Go to any crit at a major architectural program (Columbia, Harvard, Pratt, SciArc, etc.) and this is what you'll see. They are almost always cool to look at, but often violate the known laws of physics - or at least, are beyond what current construction materials and methods are capable of. I am all for progressive design and planning, but this stuff is usually nonsense. Not to mention, many of these futuristic scenes are completely irrational in their planning and design (for example, what is the point of the "War of the Worlds" tentacle building - forget how you would cantilever a structure like that, why the hell would you do it!). There are plenty of progressive and innovative architects, planners and designers out in the world doing real things that are actually able to be built (and are being built - many of the buildings in Dubai, the Chicago Spire - and many of Calatrava's buildings, etc.). Calling these things city's of the future is like calling Atlantis (from the Stargate series) the city of the future - they won't even be considered let alone attempted.
- korea, on 01/13/2009, -1/+4You think that's a matter of money? Military service is already compulsory for South Koreans, should South Korea start hiring mercenaries? Would it please you if U.S. troops aren't stationed in South Korea despite the fact that it is of mutual interest since without it the delicate balance of power in Asia is thrown off? And if you don't think the balance of power is delicate, please explain to my why China frequently has to smack North Korea every time they do something to provoke Japan to re-arm. Everyone has interests there.
I bet you think your smart assed comment is really witty. There are much more dangerous places to be stationed than in South Korea. But it would be impossible to make you understand the situation since you think architecture concept art is indicative of a nation's military budget. - Paneoz, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2I hope it happens :]
- GuacamoleSan, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2wowwww that building at around 0:45 is awesome.....as is the "robotic tower"....incredible, i hope this actually gets built
- ElDiablo6870, on 01/13/2009, -2/+4You sure seem awful defensive.
I do not think it necessary for the US to police the entire world. The reality is that the US can not afford to police the world any longer. I would like to see all American troops come home, and only deployed when absolutely necessary for the security of the US.
Try to be a little more respectful in the future just as you would be face to face. - isukeyo, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2They never do - there is world of difference between progressive urban planning/design and concept/fantasy art!
- bpm2000, on 01/13/2009, -1/+3***** reminds me of sim city when u get all advanced
- TracerMan, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS!
- stoanhart, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Unfortunately, most of these sweet buildings will probably never leave the drawing board. Where's my arcology, damnit!
- Wawin, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Quite a contrast with North Korea.

- mrseptic, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1@El So a madman with nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles threatening a few of our allies isn't a security concern of the US? korea (the poster) has a much better understanding of the situation than you do.
Try to be a little less ignorant in the future. - kasperu, on 01/13/2009, -1/+2Pump more oil?
- korea, on 01/13/2009, -1/+2Starcraft jokes are funny. Random political comments that are off-base and fundamentally wrong will get a snarky comment.
Now go back to making a statement about zerg rushes and whatnot.
The United States is asserting its own interests in South Korea and maintaining a power balance between countries that are and are not legitimate democracies. It is easy to say that you want to see all American troops come home, but it isn't happening. The United States is a super power its Armed Forces are integral to maintaining global stability. In a way, the United States preserves its interests, provides the global community a very important service that promotes, and are providing many soldiers with positive travel experiences that they otherwise may not have had.
I don't think I was being disrespectful. Face-to-face, you wouldn't make such an uneducated comment when shown architecture proof of concept images. Face-to-face, you wouldn't respond to someone calling you out on your ignorance with some sunshine-and-flowers-fabric-softener response about the armed troops. The bottom line is, you thought you were saying something clever, but you weren't and I told you why. You can see it as defensive if you want. - inactive, on 01/13/2009, -2/+2test
- hiseoul, on 07/23/2009, -0/+0wow. It's like wonderful cities~~~
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -2/+2Too bad the koreans only have half of their country. Why does the world even recognize a dictatorship (north korea) as a legitimate country? I say we go kick kim jong il's ass before he really does get some nukes.
- ElDiablo6870, on 01/13/2009, -3/+2I really did not see my reply as "clever". You make some good points that happen to be factual. And, while it is not likely to happen any time soon, I would still like to see US troops come home and let South Korea protect itself. The US military is stretched too thin. The US economy can not afford to police the entire world. There will come a time when the elected officials in this country understand this fact.
I am good with the sunshine and flowers, but I do not used fabirc softener. In addition to that, I see nothing wrong with voicing my opinion about S. Korea and the rest of the world defending itself, and it is not because I am just a heartless bastard. I can't help but believe the US will eventually crash at the rate we are spending. It has to stop. Bringing troops home is one part of what needs to happen. Anyway, I would make my statement to your face with no disrespect intended. I might allow you to call me a smart ass if you wished, but I doubt that you would. - astutissimo, on 01/13/2009, -5/+3These buildings look stupid. I would like to see some buildings that actually look good.
- acegi, on 01/13/2009, -6/+2S korea is taking a deep dive with their new idiot president. they'll be shoulder to shoulder with cambodia and palestine soon.
- nurbsenvi, on 01/13/2009, -6/+1Why build that in Dubai?
You don't build house on sand.
