- Gryphon09, on 07/14/2008, -4/+46For some reason I don't think a tsunami is going to come rushing up the Adriatic Sea...
- mecharabbit, on 07/14/2008, -0/+38According to Wikipedia, it was founded by inhabitants of other Roman cities that were fleeing barbarian invaders. I hope that answers your question.
- mecharabbit, on 07/14/2008, -1/+37There it is, right there. Now pay up.
- lava, on 07/14/2008, -0/+31And I went to Venice without a stick up my ass, and it was awesome. The weather was perfect, riding the boats from station to station was really cool, and playing with the pigeons at the square is something I'll never forget (PROTIP: Throw something dark up in the air to make the pigeons fly).
- freebird09, on 07/14/2008, -11/+41And here's Venice in 30 years:

- TecK415, on 07/14/2008, -20/+47Pff what an ugly city. Travel by boats??!? I'm going to drive my Ford F-5,0000 all over that *****. Crush those sandy ass buildings. Where the ***** are the skyscrapers?!?! Do they celebrate 4th of July there? I bet they don't, those unpatriotic bastards. I bet they don't even have Budweiser.

- mecharabbit, on 07/14/2008, -1/+27I've never heard of any traffic jams on the canals. Plus gondoliers are probably more friendly than cab drivers and they sing for you too.
- Magic0, on 07/14/2008, -0/+24thank you

willing to share bathroom/bed with neighbors. - FelixDrylock, on 07/14/2008, -9/+32is it me or do these comments really suck?
- TecK415, on 07/14/2008, -2/+22... If you can't tell that I'm messing around then I'm adding you to the turm "oblivious." I actually drive a civic, and I don't like crushing buildings with it. :) I would love to visit Venice...
- skyfox2k, on 07/14/2008, -0/+19...I don't think its *below* sea level...
- jattea, on 07/14/2008, -0/+17This is hilarious. How do people not know it's sarcasm???
- seefresh, on 07/14/2008, -13/+30I've been to Venice a couple times and that places sucks. It stinks, it's packed with tourist shops, the food is cheap and "trendy" and the water is really dirty. Venice sucks. Florence is the best city in Italy.
- kevptim, on 07/14/2008, -2/+16A tsunami in the Mediterranean?
- maci01, on 07/14/2008, -0/+14Also just run at them.
- MutatedNantuko, on 07/14/2008, -4/+1710 bucks to the guy who can find the building destroyed in Casino Royale
- cinch123, on 07/14/2008, -2/+14This is really a wonderful city, best experienced after the tourists have gotten back on their boats and you can go around town, get a glass of wine and some cicchetti from a bar, and learn about the people who actually LIVE there.
Venice really is magical, and it's a shame that a city that was once one of the most powerful in all of Europe is now being destroyed by the elements and irresponsible tourists. - kenvsryu, on 07/14/2008, -3/+15I can smell it from here.
- wontstoptalking, on 07/14/2008, -2/+14So there is a roofing company monopoly going on there.

- therearenorules, on 07/14/2008, -2/+11this is awesome. i was just there a month and a half ago. it was an amazing experience. no cars, no bikes, just people, water, and boats. lots of boats. i even saw a DHL boat. kind of surreal.
- Origin415, on 07/14/2008, -0/+9*yet*
- Adenosine, on 07/14/2008, -0/+8How about when Venice arranged to have crusaders sack Constantinople? Also, there weren't Turks living there back then.
- socoolisme, on 07/14/2008, -3/+11you can ride a seal to work!
- BetterOffEd, on 07/14/2008, -1/+9*you're
(I reported you too.) - jattea, on 07/14/2008, -0/+8...and irresponsible government regulation. Venice is down from its high of 250,000 residents to its currrent 30,000 residents, in part due to the difficulties in living there with so many government regulations. It's difficult to be a land-owner because you must go through so much bureaucracy to do minor house improvements, etc... Most of those buildings are empty, and no matter what time of year you visit, 9 of ten people you encounter are tourists.
While I loved many elements of Venice when I visited (the architecture, the romantic setting, the history, the food...), the current state of the city lends a Disneyworld-esque experience... - dbhalla, on 07/14/2008, -1/+8Google map that *****.
- mecharabbit, on 07/14/2008, -0/+7I knew what you meant, I was just being a smart ass. Sorry.
- Snuff99, on 07/14/2008, -0/+7and the city is actually sinking.
- crownedgriffin, on 07/14/2008, -1/+8Not true. The building are standing on tree trunks drivin into the ground.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -2/+9When was it the most powerful city in Europe? Constantinople was always more important, and Venice constantly peed their pants thinking of Turks invading.
- pixeleyes, on 07/14/2008, -0/+7I got back from Venice 3 days ago. Trust me, it stinks, but I still liked it a lot more than I expected to.
Getting around on boats is a lot of fun, but doing it permanently would be a pain. - bosssmiley, on 07/14/2008, -1/+7How: Wooden pilings driven into the lagoon. Build houses on top. When house subsides build new floors. Build breakwaters in the outer lagoons to cope with spring tides.
Why: Mouth of the Po River = perfect entrepôt for Levantine products heading for Northern Italy and Germany. - nightlite, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6mirrors for the first image
