- richpav, on 11/17/2008, -2/+28Hello Flom Japan. Been living here 18 years and have NEVER seen a used pantie vending machine. Nor do I know anyone who's ever seen or heard of one. Once when I caught a chikan on a train, I had to go to the police station to give a statement and asked a cop on the vice squad if he ever heard of one. He went out and asked everyone else in the room. Nobody had ever heard of one.
Used pantie vending machines in Kabukicho? Nope. Asked there too. Akihabara. None. Why? Because they don't exist, period.
New pantie vending machines? Yes. Used? No. It's an urban myth, started by a *single* used pantie vending machine that was set up in Chiba City in the early 90's. It caused an outrage in the local community that made the international news. Since then, many prefectures have made them illegal by requiring sellers of used clothing to obtain a license under the same law that prevents people from selling stolen goods.
I'd link to the blog post I wrote about it but that's frowned upon here.
And if they did exist, wouldn't there would be hundreds of photos of them all over the Internet? - guyinjapan, on 11/17/2008, -3/+28It drives me crazy that we don't have vending machines with hot drinks here in the US. There's nothing better than walking to work on a cold winter morning in Tokyo and hitting up a vending machine for a hot can of coffee. Granted, the coffee in Japan is absolutely terrible, the vending machine type particularly so, but it's still a great way to warm up in the morning. They even have a canned corn soup that's fairly common. But here, the only options are cold soft drinks. Not a very friendly choice when it's 45 degrees out! Cmon and catch up America! We want some crazy vending machines too!
- internalprime8, on 11/17/2008, -2/+18"I like vending machines because candy tastes better when it falls. If I buy a candy bar at the store, oftentimes I will drop it so that it reaches its maximum flavor potential."
- etsa, on 11/17/2008, -1/+16Was in tokyo while back. Vending Machines for games, porn, magazines, mobile phones and more. Great stuff.
- HumphreyB, on 11/17/2008, -1/+14This article doesn't mention the vending machine restaurants. At many small restaurants there's a vending machine where you order what you want. You receive a ticket from the machine and then you give that ticket to the chef. It's an easy way to order if you don't speak the language.
- Mujokan, on 11/17/2008, -0/+12The Chinese-derived pronunciation is "shu" in Japanese. In Japanese it can refer to alcoholic drinks in general, or sake in particular, though often you say "nihonshu" when referring to sake for the sake of clarity.
/wapanese - MacEnvy, on 11/17/2008, -0/+11Ever since they were made from bound pieces of paper.
- EricMiIIer, on 07/10/2009, -0/+11that's what she said!
- Benno, on 11/17/2008, -1/+12Hot coffee vending machines have been around the US for at least a decade if not longer. I guess you mean the type where you don't have to put a paper cup at the base but I like that since it lets you use your own mug.
- Mujokan, on 11/17/2008, -0/+10Link away, it's not a big deal if it's relevant to what you are saying IMO.
- Callidus, on 11/17/2008, -0/+10Hahaha, link to the original pic please.
- shewasjustagrl, on 11/17/2008, -3/+12Mitch was a true comedic genius. It's sad that he can't share it with us anymore, but I like to imagine he's now in a place where he can rock his beret without any care.

- rugabug, on 11/17/2008, -0/+8Welcome to Japan.
- ElGubrush, on 11/17/2008, -0/+8I can finally say I'm well-read!
- aobtd, on 11/17/2008, -13/+21porn vending machine?!
- jadenar, on 11/17/2008, -0/+8The machines at laundromats in Japan will wash your clothes (the machine adds detergent for you), dry your clothes, and call your cell phone when they are done. Not joking. http://tinyurl.com/5l8c3q
- guyinjapan, on 11/17/2008, -0/+8Yeah but they're not very common. In Japan, these things are on every street corner. It's pretty much a standard with vending machines there... they have a couple rows of drinks that are cold, and a couple of rows of drinks that are heated. Anyway, I'm just saying they're nice and I kind of miss seeing them around, and wish there were more of them in America.
- Mujokan, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8I remember many a run to the booze vending machine just before 11. Sometimes trying to get the 1000 yen notes in just as it was getting ready to shut down.
Notice that "lingerie vending machine" has schoolgirl cosplay costumes in it. I don't think they are "common in major cities" though. I used to live in Shibuya (which has a kind of red light district) and I never saw one. - ElGubrush, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7I prefer my beer poured, not dropped
- IHaveCrayons, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8We have more Starbucks then we do have vending machines man
- Magnus150, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8~desu.
- guyinjapan, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Yeah, but Starbucks costs 3 bucks a coffee, and sometimes you don't want to stand in a line. And Japan has just as many Starbucks as we do in the US, if not more lol. Heated vending machines are just a different sort of thing. They're one of those things you'd think you'd never use, but once you do, you never want to go back. Same thing with heated toilets with control panels and automatic ass-cleaners. Try it before you knock it.
- jerryudigg, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8I just want to buy beer from a vending machine
- poxonyou, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Yeah. I've been in Tokyo almost 2 years and never seen one. Think it's a false story, or perhaps a strange promotional for a nearby lingerie store.
And I also agree, most Japanese dudes seem to just ignore women in public like they do everyone else, neither perverted nor polite, but same for women (ie, usually no obviously flirting aside from a glance; either play the numbers game or prepare to be disappointed). I unfortunately don't have a link, but there was a frequency of sex study among young singles in major cities and Tokyo actually ranked fairly low. That's why there are things like go-con...single people are EVERYWHERE, but no one flirts with each other, so they have to meet people through their friends or coworkers. /debunk - jontroop, on 11/17/2008, -1/+7On the surface this all seems so cool and modern, however this post-apocalyptic electric playground is kind of depressing.
- richpav, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6You don't see the porn vending machines much anymore. Many prefectures have outlawed selling adult material in public, i.e. you need to have the area (such as a store) off limits to 18 and under. Also, I think the fact that hardcore porn is available on the Internet makes the censored stuff not so appealing to consumers anymore.

- Benno, on 11/17/2008, -2/+7One minute you're buying a coke from a robotic vending machine the next you're fighting the Zentradi :|
- Mujokan, on 11/17/2008, -3/+8That article is written in a pretty insulting way. I think 4chan has proved that the immature sexuality sometimes found in Japan is not limited to that country. Contrary to what the internet might indicate, the overwhelming majority of Japanese guys are normal in their sexuality and have normal relationships with women their own age.
I wonder if readers writing in to Snopes haven't confused machines selling new underwear with those the article talks about that were banned in 1993. - animefx, on 11/17/2008, -1/+6I miss the vending machines in Tokyo, they were all over and FAR more variety than whats in the states? Need something hot? No problem? Need some cold Milk Tea? Sure.
- jackromke, on 11/17/2008, -7/+12I bought my Japanese wife from a vending machine...

- Daisideep, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4hence why there are pictures of the food on the vending machine....
I personally like the vending machines at bowling alleys that actually cook the food for you... want some fries? or maybe some chicken fingers? Stick 500 yen into the vending machine, wait 5 minutes and its nice and hot... I can't imagine it tastes very good though - KibibyteBrain, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Well, the whole Japanese pop culture so idolized in the West over the past decade or so is more of a counterculture in Japan. Which should be obvious to anyone who knows anything about the Japanese, who are actually overall rather conservative now-a-days. Pointing to things like panty machines or Akihabara maid cafes and calling that normal for Japan would be like going to a some of the crazy stores or bars in San Francisco and calling that standard faire for the US. Although, strangely, there seems to be similar confusion about US culture in Japan, where they think MTV is what life is like in the US.
- lothar250, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4I'm not sure, but I think Japan has less of an underage-drinking/smoking problem than certain other countries which have a much stricter law.. Got a lot to do with culture and education
- internalprime8, on 11/17/2008, -2/+6Uh oh, all the anime nerds are getting into a frenzy.
