- Totz83, on 01/05/2009, -0/+24It took a century of cattle thieving and drug smuggling for them to fix it? lol
- Dumbledorito, on 01/05/2009, -2/+24It's almost un-American to fill in some place as cool-sounding as "Smuggler's Gulch." I mean, where is the Lone Ranger going to head off the bandits now?
- xero69, on 01/05/2009, -0/+18FTA:
It became a dangerous no-man's land, filled with bandits who raped and robbed immigrants and charged tolls for safe passage. The occasional sniper targeted Border Patrol agents. For many years, agents were not allowed to venture alone into the gulch, where their radios didn't work. - fastEE, on 01/04/2009, -9/+24It's about time.
- lolwaffle, on 01/05/2009, -2/+16I've been to the gulch. It's some pretty rough terrain, and it's not exactly easy or feasible to build a fence down a cliff. For the anti-fence folks, yes, they absolutely are necessary, at least in this area. We'd be on a hill top where we can see the other side, and there will be a whole cluster of them just waiting for their cue to make a dash for the nearest farm or shopping center. The guy that gives them the cue is on a hilltop himself, watching the border patrol. You can see the Imperial Beach station (smuggler's gulch is in their area) from Mexico, and I'm told they count how many BP vehicles leave so the smugglers know what they're up against. They know when the shifts change, etc. Having the fence there helps create a bottleneck and gives the patrol a chance to respond. Out in the middle of nowhere flat areas like Arizona, they might be able to make due with just cameras and sensors, because they have time to respond before the illegal makes it to civilization.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 01/05/2009, -2/+13Finally my cattle is safe!
- billraydrums, on 01/05/2009, -1/+12That's US government efficiency for you. A problem must exist for at least 6 decades before they decide to fix it.
- JohnnyDIGGme, on 01/05/2009, -0/+10They didn't really dig the first one.....
- JedicodeWarrior, on 01/05/2009, -2/+12Needs more turrent guns and acid pits.
- haydesigner, on 01/05/2009, -1/+11I take it you've never been there.
And never seen the "*****" parts of the US. - bladzalot, on 01/05/2009, -6/+16And it only took a states bankruptcy to realize that illegal aliens not paying taxes and leeching off the system actually DO make an impact. Take that you freakin mexican hugging liberals...
- retral, on 01/05/2009, -2/+12"Sir, there's a canyon on the border that's used for illegal border crossing"
"Ok, just fill it in." - twiztidsinz, on 01/05/2009, -1/+10cattle is plural.
- psychosatori, on 01/04/2009, -0/+9Grow your own...it is very easy.
- twinklyJesus, on 01/05/2009, -1/+9Back in Texas where he lived?
- Achilles2, on 01/05/2009, -1/+9I am sure Mexico doesn't want the States' freedom.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -4/+12Yeah, because the USA is the only country around evil enough to actually have immigration laws.
(Not that Democrats or Republicans have had much desire to actually enforce those laws up until now, but imagine the gall of us that we should even have immigration laws! Evil Americans!) - shitballs, on 01/05/2009, -7/+15dey took er deeerbs!!
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -5/+13Instead of wasting trillions on Iraq, we should just bring "freedom" to Mexico, annex it as a new state.
- fancywares319, on 01/05/2009, -4/+11they just need a giant reservoir of water, the coast is close, and then have giant doors that can open and they can flush the canyon out Isengard style when they see ppl using it
owned - xero69, on 01/05/2009, -1/+8Better late than never!
- Dumbledorito, on 01/05/2009, -2/+9Sometimes. A few of their "experts" have been as fringe-nuts as some of their targets, especially when it comes to anything remotely political.
They're at their best debunking psychics and bottled water. - retral, on 01/05/2009, -9/+15Do we really want that ***** to be part of us?
- BrianD2, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6Booze runners? Don't they know we have 7 elevens?
- JFitzpatrick, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6"The canyon figured in some of California's earliest history. Charles W. Hughes, a local historian, said many of California's earliest settlers came through the pass. "It's very discouraging. We talk about trying to preserve our history . . . and yet they can come in and do this," he said."
I'm a pretty big preservationist myself, but let's be reasonable. They didn't bulldoze a national park in the central US, they filled in a giant friggin hole in the US border that was known for over a century as a funnel of drugs, stolen goods, and illegal immigration. There isn't a whole lot about a big empty ass rocky valley that can't be conveyed to future historians with photographs and video. - ChrisRonin, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6Bandits got the other ones :-(
- magamiako, on 01/06/2009, -2/+7I think it has more to do with the people at the top of the economic chain hoarding more money.
People at the top love illegal immigrants. No taxes, no benefits! They don't exist, but the work can still get done. - centran, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6Well... yeah.
It is a huge project to undertake. Even with modern technologies it is taking many years to complete. It is also very costly.
When they started to try to enforce the cattle thieving and smuggling they then ran into violence. However, the violence was more towards the illegal immigrants coming in. So, they figured "screw it!"
After awhile, the local police decieded to try and enforce the law which caused the border patrol to actively get back into the area. When they re-realized how much of a pain in the ass it is to patrol they tried to put a better fence up. They fought with California for awhile and started to build it anyways but where eventually shut down due to environmental concerns. After arguing for several years on how to fix the problem, the Department of Homeland Security was formed. They overruled California law and started this current project.
So as you can see, it is a lot more complicated then bad things are happening so fix it.
It is more like bad things are happening so lets fix it... oh ***** this is hard, lets ignore it.... but we can't ignore it so lets fix it.... but this is hard so lets make it easier.... but the local government won't let us make it easier.... call in the big guns to fix everything. - ramzavala, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6ohh godd. I love me my cattles.
- wadd, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4I once had a Canadian girlfriend. I gave her a t-shirt that said "Canada - the 51st State!".
...you did notice the "past tense", right?
I suspect Mexican sentiment would be similar. - jerrolds, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Thats no way to talk about your mom. She's a wonderful lady.
with cankles. - cupid311, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Turret guns that shoot acid. Now there's an idea.
- xero69, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Did you read the whole article???? This is a massive project. It would take a lot of illegals a very long time to undo the changes being made. Sure they'll make tunnels along the border, but this particular crossing point was dangerous for everyone involved, including the illegals.
- oboshoe, on 01/06/2009, -1/+5Actually there is a huge chunk of society that still has not gotten the message.
California is still scratching their head, wondering why they are broke, despite being home to most of the worlds movie industry AND computer industry. - cupid311, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Actually he was referring to the "is" after cattle. the word "are" should follow a plural. "Is" follows a singular.... So, yeah he was right. It should be "Finally, my cattle are safe". And we now return you to your regularly scheduled ranting.
- JestaMcMerv, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4i was thinking giant pits covered with banana leaves and a tiger at the bottom.
- cupid311, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Man, I would hope you guys broke up over something different. Because if that was the straw that broke the camels back then you are way better off.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/05/2009, -3/+6P&T:*****! is awesome.
- betheturtle, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4Zing!
- Hetman, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3I know now it is just cocain and mariujana. Not that I care about the marijuana. But you get my point.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3***** you Frank!
- cupid311, on 01/06/2009, -2/+5That must be why there are so many illegals coming accross.... Because they don't want to be here. Yup that's it.
- crosquillas, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4I liked how they omit the part where the rains carried debris & sediment to a choke point, provoking floods for otay mesa farmers in the States and causing the death of a couple horses. Or how the gigantic effort is akin to trying to cover the sun with one finger.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Next step: LANDMINES!!!
- philz, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4And why did they wait a whole century?
- cupid311, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4Holy crap take some ridalin! I don't think the guy is racist, I actually didn't think that at all. He obviously has a thing against illegals which is perfectly fine. With the state of the country the way it is I can guarantee there are some Americans that will take the crap jobs (pun intended). Also you don't have to be an illegal immigrant in order to be yelled at by some fat *****. That happens to everyone in almost every line of jobs. Just take a deep breath and you'll make it through reading the rest of the comments. But yeah, I do see both points. I think that easier border patrol is good. But i can see where the enviromentalists will get pissed. I would rather have better border control.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4Have you seen the women on Mexican TV? Muy caliente!
