- HappyScrappy, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4I dunno, I would say the UP is probably too rustic for most people. And it's so far from anything, whether you go out through Wisconsin, Michigan or the Soo.
You can get all that you want in the northern part of the lower peninsula pretty much. Try to get as far west as you can, although note right at the coast you start to run into rich refugees from Chicago in the summer and some of them kind of blow the friendly vibe. Either way, try to be to the west so if you decide to drive back down south you end up in nice cities like Grand Rapids instead of in Flint (sorry to crap on my hometown, but you don't need to visit there).
If you do go to the UP, stick to summer. And bring your bug repellent, the strongest you can find. - rentdn, on 06/06/2009, -0/+4Great article , but mostly I loved this part
" Las Vegas, Nevada: "It's never been so easy to score a deal on the Strip. Five-star resorts are marked down to three-star prices. "
I'm sure they know what they are doing , and most of guys will end up paying even more then regular 5 star resorts are :) I like to gamble and I know how it is happening that quiet often you're finding yourself with empty pockets :) - keenanj, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3my wife is a uper going to ishpeming for the 4th of july
- funkedup, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2Upstate Michigan is one of the nicest places in the whole country, especially in the summer. Of course Michigan gets a bad rap because of Flint and Detroit, but there are some great places in Michigan. Isle Royale and Mackinac are both excellent.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2Yes, yes, we do. I use Digg frequently, as does my eldest son. We use the same name, hawksenthor, because I want to know what he says on Digg. As a Saudi Arabian, I realize that we must be careful what we say as our lifestyle is unpopular in the West.
- bdbr, on 06/07/2009, -0/+2"I realize that we must be careful what we say as our lifestyle is unpopular in the West."
Actually, we go camping too. :-) - CTK14A, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1With the recession on, that volunteering idea doesn't look all that bad... good for the resume and the soul. You'd have to pay for travel, but there are plenty of places to volunteer a road trip away in the States.
I'm not sure I like the implications for one of these trips though: "Repair fencing for a wolf sanctuary in Colorado" - BigAmish, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1Don't understand why the national media love Dreamland BBQ. Folks I talk to prefer Lawlers in Madison, AL or Big Bob Gibson in Decatur, AL.
- MysticKatDaddy, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1Mackinac Island in Michigan is always cool to go to. A friend of mine goes every year. There are a couple casinos in the UP also. There is not really much else. It's mostly wilderness.
- zagatbuzz, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1In times like these, bargain hunting is necessary, thanks for posting this very helpful and money-saving list!
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1bdbr- Camping is fun, but what I meant by "our lifestyle" is the polygamy, marrying under a father's order, public executions, and absolute monarchy government. It sounds more primitive than it is, and we choose this lifestyle.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1Your ignorance is a poor reflection of your nation. Remember that on Digg, people love to stereotype nations for what Digg users say. We do not abuse our women in Saudi Arabia. I love my three wives equally and refuse to marry anyone who is presented to me by her father as a gift, because I too believe that women are given rights by Allah. I do not force them to wear "10 pounds" of garb. Their shawls are actually surprisingly light. We do not beat them for being happy and laughing. I think the main reason they do not like camping is because of the reptiles. It seems like men like camping better. Looking at your page, I see that you are an accomplished troll. I congratulate you; this is an achievement of which you should be proud.
- truthseeker69, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1Go ta sauna?
- MikaStar, on 06/07/2009, -1/+2You get Digg in Saudi Arabia?
- Manther, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1America was founded by people who wanted to get away from the persecution they faced in their home countries. It was founded by a group of men who understood that there were more important things in life than trying to make sure everyone was the same religion, or spoke the same language, or shared the same beliefs. America became the "melting pot" of cultural diversity that it is today as more and more people sought to enjoy the freedoms of this new, tolerant country.
It's unfortunate that some people don't get that anymore, and have resorted to being those same ignorant, bigot barbarians that forced their ancestors out of their homes. How people choose to live in Saudi Arabia has no impact on how I live my life, so what's the problem with them living however they choose?
Live and let live. Aren't you supposed to pray for someone if you think they need saving, and not treat them like ***** anyway?? - truthseeker69, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1Gas is stupid expensive. So are smokes...and the beer has a 10 cent per can deposit added to the price (though you can always go into a store and return the cans to retrieve your 10 cent per can deposit).
Ironwood, MI...FTW!!!
- Once a Yooper. - Atmandk, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1I'm from Muskegon and I always say the the UP is kind of like our own little Alaska. Pictured Rocks is one of the best places I've been to, and camping all along the Lake Superior coast is great - get a campsite that overlooks the lake for $12 a night, can't be beat, and some of the best rock collecting in the world. Down the coast of Lake Michigan in the Lower Peninsula check out Silver Lake and many of the parks in the Muskegon area (Hoffmaster and Lake Harbor at the Mona Lake Channel are my favorites). Michigan can't be beat in the summer.
- proudazmommy, on 06/07/2009, -0/+0Mackinaw Island is awesome. I've been there several times and it is breathtakingly beautiful. The ferry ride over can be a little pricey though.
- govindprasad01, on 06/12/2009, -0/+0Great news on the right time,
you can't believe what u can find in your own backyard - proudazmommy, on 06/07/2009, -0/+0Here is Phoenix, many of the resorts offer special getaway packages to locals because no one wants to vacation here when it's 110+ out!
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -1/+1But...but...we are Americans...
- workasateam2day, on 06/08/2009, -0/+0That's why they also offer free drinks when you play ;) The more toasted you are, the more likely you're not paying attention to how much you're spending...
- ASUgraduate2009, on 06/09/2009, -0/+0Thanks for posting these tips! But be careful in new places!
Last time I traveled my lap top was stolen (thank god it was just after mid term...)
I found out after my trip about travelers insurance... I guess they cover things that stolen or lost on a trip.
If you are traveling def consider it, I found some cheap insurance at GradGuard.com if you're looking! - inactive, on 06/07/2009, -3/+2I do not know much of America but here in my home in Saudi Arabia, people love to camp in the desert. It is great fun to bring my camels into the desert as my sons love to ride them. My wives do not like it as much, but my six sons like it. Sometimes, we go with local friends and camp as a community. I recommend that people in other nations do the same with or without a desert.
- eramos, on 06/07/2009, -1/+0Nope, pretty much sounds just as primitive as it is. The fact that you admit you choose to live that way is why people rightly consider you backwards, ignorant barbarians.
Anyway, aren't you late for the 7PM stoning of a woman who sinned against Allah by getting raped? - eramos, on 06/07/2009, -5/+2Your wives probably don't like it because they'll be whipped to within an inch of their lives if they show any enjoyment or pleasure. Also, it probably gets pretty hot under that 10 pounds of black cloth you force them to wear, so they've got that to contend with.

What is Digg?
