- jcharak58, on 09/25/2008, -3/+42Stuff like this makes me wish for the day when the US and Europe become more self sufficient on Energy
- mattearle, on 09/26/2008, -3/+3010 pages, no detailed content or follow up links, ads in the middle - simply no. AskMen is *****.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -6/+32you forgot [combined with] two parts insanely regressive fundamentalist *****, and and a part or two of testosterone-driven depravity and excesses of decadence...and all the gross hypocrisy that combination implies. the whole country is a big wagging dick trying to buy class and respect, like some hillbilly with a shiny Cadillac parked outside their shack.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -7/+22Yet no one wants to live there.....................psychotic religion and glossy buildings = fail
- auer1816, on 09/25/2008, -1/+15If these guys opened their doors to gambling, they'd really be raking it in.
- ScottMcIntyre, on 09/25/2008, -2/+14These are images of some stunning concepts and architecture planned by the oil-rich state. Image 7 is of Dubailand, which will be a mega theme park. So much money!!
QFA:"Costing $70 billion to complete, the park will consist of seven fully themed worlds with 45 mega projects, including another massive $1 billion indoor snow park, and 200 smaller sub projects. Dubailand will dwarf Disney World coming in at twice the size." - paulieslim, on 09/26/2008, -0/+11Ok, ok...I get..they have lots of money
- Armstrong3, on 09/26/2008, -1/+10I take public trans! I'm helping making this ***** show go bankrupt!
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -1/+9maybe dubai will bail us out
- nickymouse, on 09/26/2008, -2/+8UAE is actuality in debt, they have no money. They barrow money based on their oil futures. So they spend the oil money of tomorrow, today.
- dc5mike, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5Interesting subject, but the way it was presented totally sucked. They just showed drawings... takes you to 10 different pages plus 2 advertisin pages just to tell you something you probably already knew.
- franklymister, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5Basically the same thing that would happen anywhere you gave a bunch of arrested adolescents a lot of money they hadn't earned through hard work - it's like MTV Cribs: Oil Sheik Edition.
- RealmDown, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5I hope that I am around to see the collapse. It'll make the housing market look like legos.
- nullcodes, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5The Dubai workers get to sort of escape the nightmarish third world conditions of their native countries when they come to build these buildings. It's not a huge bump up, but it's better than getting malaria or whatever tropical disease is prevalent in the country they left. They also aren't stuck trying to eke out an existence from subsistence farming or urban garbage scavenging. They also get to remit a huge amount of money back to their families at home. A significant portion of Bangladesh's foreign exchange revenue (for example) comes from middle east remittances ( http://www.bangladeshjournal.com/article/Business/ ... ).
Dubai isn't sending an army to the third world to kidnap people .. people are going to Dubai on their own to make money. - lordsandwich, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4Nothing says tolerant like imposing fines and/or prison terms on tourists who drink orange juice during Ramadan.
- thelastwarrior, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5Imagine if they invested in their "real" future by creating free universities. They could lure the best professors from around the world with their limitless funding. Unfortunately Emirates doesn't really care. Under that glamor lies a poor class trying to survive on a pittance who will never have a chance to further themselves in life.
- snafflepaffle, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5I can hardly wait to see all these buildings turning to rust and ruin in about 20 years after the global financial bust.
I mean it's cool and all but not sustainable in the long term. The gloss is going to fade and people will find somewhere new to spend their extra money (if they have any) leaving all those huge building to be buried in sand and man made island to return to the sea. - yuanzhoulu, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Europe is getting there, the US is not.
These projects at Dubai seem really wasteful. I guess they need tourism dollars when oil runs out. But does this stuff make for good tourism? I don't know, it's not my kind of tourism ... my kind of tourism is usually nature, traditional stuff, and all that, not modern inventions. - alphabetagaga, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Dubai stories are always insane. We need a resource which we can rake in billions from and create stuff like this. Like booze. Or...booze. Sorry, I've been drinking.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Yes, the best way to make your point is to starting name calling. Dubai's economy resides on the back of the oil industry, is very dependent on it, and is attached directly to the oil industry's hip...even though they don't generate much revenue from the sale of oil DIRECTLY. lrn2exrapolate.
- zacbro, on 09/26/2008, -2/+5Dugg for Falconcity of Wonders. Are you kidding me? (#4)
Seems like there's a "Crazy Dubai Projects" on Digg every 5 minutes, but it's so awesome I can't not digg it. I want to go there so bad! - RealmDown, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3You're betting that reply on oil not running out and viable alternative energy not materializing. Not a bad bet in the short run, but I'm taking 10 to 1 on the long term.
- Beej, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3You will be, if it happens at all. Dubai will run out of oil in a couple decades; even today oil only counts for 8% of their revenue or something like that.
What you're seeing is a country that knows it's doomed in its current form, and is reinventing itself as a high-class tourist destination...pretty successfully, actually.
See, they're planning ahead by 15 years. This is something that happens with a monarchy, but not so much with the free market (which tends to be pretty short-sighted.)
Don't get me wrong--I love the free market. It's so "organic". But it's certainly not always the most efficient way to get things done. - Sahdow, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2Like *****. Or....*****. Sorry, I've been fapping to Yasmin Fostok.
- nullcodes, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2market study? Anyway they are also building universities, health care facilities, etc. See dubai is counting on the third world improving itself and wanting and being able to afford these services instead of writing them off as permanent basket cases.
Anyway .. most of the stuff they're building gets sold out quick. - handmadewallaby, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3Talk about "Overkill City".
- LocalDocal, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Amazing, eh? What it must feel like to have enough money to spend *$70 billion* on a goddamn theme park.
- crunchdigg, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2pikers. We're spending $700B+ on something where you can't even ride a roller coaster or snow ski in the 110+ degree DESERT.
- petebot, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Yeah I know! We've already got one of those in Vegas!
- eSentrik, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2How do they know there will even be demand for all these ridiculously luxurious things?
- frostbyt, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Dude. I am going to move there when they finish all this.
- CrazedLeper, on 09/26/2008, -3/+5At least they actually *have* oil. The US has nothing but ego and weapons.
- yuanzhoulu, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3"Ever thought the Eiffel Tower was a tad bit boring? Sure, we all have. That's why Dubai is going to make it bigger, encase it in glass and turn it into a luxury hotel in the city center."
That's not very nice to the Eiffel tower. couldn't they do something original? - ChristmasPoo, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Damn, I wish I could dig you twice
- Snoosy, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Outrageous =/= stupid.
- AndrewMoyer, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2...or sentencing a couple to *6 ***** years in prison* for sex on the beach...
http://digg.com/world_news/Couple_Faces_6_Years_in ...
Now that's progress! - TehInternetz, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Dubai has so much money, they just come up with ridiculous things to build. That's awesome! I want that.
- funkedup, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3I think the real question is how the UAE will handle the ramifications of attracting Westerners. Things like topless sunbathing, sex on the beach, drug use, and drunkenness will only increase with these types of developments, and we all know how accepting of these behaviors Dubai is.
- danesis, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Sports isn't UAE's domain, it might be possible that the Olympics could be held there in a not too distant future. Hopefully the political powers will seize to exist post 2012 once our transitional period in humanity has shifted for the better good.
- mercano, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2What, no Ski Dubai? It's an indoor ski hill in a desert, how could it be left off?
- touchedsm, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Thats a nice and well searched observation! if the super power does not display its ability in all aspects and areas of life, then whats the need of being called the super power!
- Wawin, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2considering how much extreme islamist terrorists hate western ways of life, how big everything is, and how many rich westener "infidels" will flock over there....i'd consider the chances of horrible events would just pile up.
- themadrammer, on 08/18/2009, -0/+2The real pipe dream is the US developing a comprehensive plan for energy. Haha!
- nj10ii, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2They will sooner or later, they will. And it will mark the beginning of the end of their society as they know it by allowing it. Just as when we allowed it. Religion even is cyclical.
- formfactor, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I couldn't concentrate on the article when they use ads like those on the right... I mean DAMN!
FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP! - badbadman2, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Interesting about Sports City and the olympic connection. Dubai can't host the Olympics as there is currently a ban on anyone holding Israeli passports entering the UAE. Not exactly in the olympic spirit is it?
And yes - the oil is a tiny part of their economy. Some people here should do some research. - nj10ii, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2But when the ***** hits the fan, we can TAKE their oil if we wanted to. Our Egos and Weapons is all it takes, Well that and a few hundred thousand lives of our boys.... Which is the real reason we don't do it.
- aquireworth, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1There was a small earthquake in Dubai a couple weeks ago. Few if any of these building plans consider earthquake proofing or sustainable living. Being that it's all built on sand ... I'll let you do the math.
The sad thing is Dubai had the chance to build their city from scratch. If they would have really sat down and planned out the possibilities they could have made a model city for centuries to come. Instead they're playing the who has the biggest dick game. - Diganta, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1Someone seems to be compensating...
- aquireworth, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1That was the first place I ever skied. It's kinda crazy to go from being in 110 * F to snow.
