- natesaint, on 11/12/2009, -3/+42False title, 10 most dangerous cities in the USA. I get so tired of reading articles that say 'the biggest' or 'tallest' etc but is only about America, who wants to know only about this country as compared to the world?
- Vaiper, on 11/12/2009, -5/+22The majority of Americans don't give a ***** about the rest of the world. :(
- earthtones, on 11/11/2009, -0/+15Paris has great sidewalks but the drivers are bonkers. I'd rather walk in Memphis any day. (Er, well, from a safety standpoint anyway.)
- DeusNova, on 11/12/2009, -0/+12Florida has the worst public transportation. The problem exists because Florida suffers from suburban sprawl...our cities aren't designed well. We have no real public transit in our major cities(besides that dinky train in Miami). It's really dangerous to drive here...as well...
- RealmDown, on 11/12/2009, -0/+9But still worth 10 points each.
- LaurenElder, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9Ha - I was looking for Atlanta. Knew it'd be on that list somewhere. No one walks here, everyone drives. Pedestrians are out of sight and out of mind.
- inactive, on 11/12/2009, -0/+9Not a shock actually, alot of people live there, cities are spread out, driving is more common, hard to run each other over in New York when half the people walk and cars go 5 mph in bumper to bumper traffic.
- jedinate, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8I live in Tampa and I was gonna say it had better be on the list, not because of the bad drivers, but because of idiotic pedestrians. It seems like every week, you hear about some drunk pedestrian getting hit stumbling across a 4 lane highway at 3 am.
- gbudavid, on 11/11/2009, -1/+9Portland Oregon
- Blinker1315, on 11/11/2009, -0/+8Rome, Cairo and Mexico City in my experience.
- yottskry, on 11/12/2009, -1/+9He's not complaining about the article, but about the TITLE of the article. If it was titled 'The 10 Most Dangerous American Cities for Pedestrians' there wouldn't be a problem.
- sinisterouge, on 11/11/2009, -1/+8What's with the weird way of listing these places? Half of the cities listed are accompanied by their respective state while the rest are not...
- clippclop, on 11/12/2009, -0/+7When i am driving I am assume that everyone around me is a retard, including pedestrians. Seems to have worked well for me so far. I've only taken out 10 or 15 pedestrians. Since i drive assuming the worst in people, they probably deserved it.
- AdeleMor, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6I don't get why the photo is from New York and (surprisingly) New York isn't even on the list.
- RodgerE1, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6I hate pedestrians, unless i'm one of them , then I hate cars!
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6I take offense to that!
Miami is not in "The South".
Miami is south of "The South". - inactive, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5The highest on the list was Orlando with just 2.9 per 100,000. Not a very high number. I think the list isn't very valid just because it could be coincidental. Also Florida cities have high tourist traffic as well, so for Orlando especially, 2.9 in 100k may be more like 2.9 in 500k. Anyway, I call BS. Just my $.02.
- rednip, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4"Pedestrians are out of sight and out of mind." And so are sidewalks.
When cities don't tax and spend the money on sidewalks, crosswalks, public transportation people get hit by cars more often.
It's a matter of priorities, my fellow man or a couple of bucks more in my wallet. - lalandica, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5wow, 5 cities in Florida. This confirms my theory that Florida is just a giant coffin - filled to the brim with senior citizens and mowing down the young ones.
- kilric, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4If they had more parking at places like Mons Venus it would not be so bad. Crossing Dale Mabry is a B
- joejitsu, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4In My opinion the 5 most dangerous are:
Liberty City
Vice City
Los Santos
San Fierro
Las Venturas - mrshickadance9, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4Buried for not just having a goddamn list.
- rednip, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3It's the diplomats you need to watch out for in DC; they can wing ya and not even get a ticket, diplomatic immunity and all.
- bravo1995, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4Whoosh.
- Nevasleep88, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3They need to enforce those Jaywalking laws more! hahaha
- PotbellyJoe, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3My grandparents live in Florida and I go down to visit whenever I get a chance. On numerous occasions (to my memory at least 3) I have gone to turn left into their neighborhood only to see the bumper of the Cadillac/mercury/Buick, that is coming the opposite direction, lift from acceleration, like they are trying to hit/intimidate me for turning left in front of them. I had plenty of space everytime, they're just curmudgeons that have a penchant for hitting things with their car.
It doesn't surprise me they would be bad news for walkers either. - darkism, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3While visiting Portland from Chicago this summer, I found Oregon drivers almost annoyingly polite and law-abiding. The cab ride from the airport took forever because the driver obeyed the speed limit.
Beautiful city you've got there, though. - inactive, on 11/12/2009, -2/+5nobody drives in new york...too much traffic
- 5thdigg, on 11/12/2009, -5/+8all in the south, what a shock.
- TimtheTaxMan, on 11/12/2009, -2/+4My guess is that they didn't control for the lower number of people walking in the colder climates. Not many people walk to work when it's below freezing 4-5 months of the year.
- TriggerHappyGTR, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Amsterdam - Stoners and bicycles don't mix
- aesthetigeek, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2I live in Atlanta. The road with the highest concentration of carless immigrants, Buford Highway, has virtually no crosswalks and a speed limit of 45 mph. People risk their lives every time they try to get to a bus stop.
- christoast, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3Jerusalem - Terrorists
Hong Kong - Pollution
Dubai - The Morality Police - squij, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2One word: Istanbul o_O
- snogye, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2hahaha yes, they do. Portland, OR
- snogye, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2woo hoo!
- inactive, on 11/12/2009, -0/+25thdigg, it is more logical than "oh they are the south, they must drive bad because they are southern"
- hereticoftruth, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Yes, I remember Jacksonville, Florida. Black men wearing black clothes crossing the streets after midnight in a heavy rainstorm in the dark. Most people don't drive as cautious as me. which means had it been another driver, those dudes would be dead.
- roberto8080, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1The city is beautiful, but try crossing the streets around Ledsplein: Bikes use pedestrian sidewalks if they need it, trams are passing quite close to you around the shops (however trams are the least of your concern they're cautious and slow) and, at least around Station Centraal, if bike riders were in a rush they just ignored the pedestrian lights and passed quickly in front of you. So, many times I was checking if there was a bike on my way before crossing the main streets. Of course, the solution is just get a bike and then be merry!
- didntlisten, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1BIg surprise: THEY'RE ALL IN THE SOUTH!
- santixx, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Buenos Aires or any other Argentine city. Nobody respects a ***** law.
- Shadic, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2I guess this is just because I'm actually living in a city now (I used to live in the outskirts of Olympia, WA), but holy ***** you are so much more likely to be hit by a car in Portland. I guess being a student and having to walk 20-30 blocks a day ups that as well.
- Shawn10000, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1I think cities need to be better designed for pedestrians. Most Urban Cities have sidewalks/ bikepaths, and bridges etc for pedestrians, but they are never exactly in the right places. I personally prefer to walk, unless I am going far because it is excellent exercise, and helps to clear your mind. I was amazed a couple weeks ago when I visited Toronto. Although the downtown was pretty pedestrian accessible I noticed that the suburban area's were terrible with big freeways everywhere. Ottawa on the other hand although much smaller, has much better bikepaths, and walking paths throughout the entire city.
- bravo1995, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Not surprising to see Orlando top the list. In addition to the horrible traffic, lousy public transportation system, and constant road construction, we have tourists who don't know where they're going and/or are apparently on vacation from obeying traffic laws. It's a recipe for disaster.
- eaglejm, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Any city in USA looks like a preschool playground compared to the wild west countries where the police are only there to bribe you and the cars have right of way over a person.
- roberto8080, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Anyone in here from Amsterdam? I loved the city but pedestrians seem to be in a lower class than riders.
- jsballardx, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1I just don't see how that's possible. It's incredible easy to get around in the city. There are lanes for pedestrians, bikers, cars, busses/trams. Its set up brilliantly. I couldn't imagine a more beautiful city to walk around in.
- kgoule, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1beijing is the worst i've seen... cars won't stop even if there is a pedestrian in front of them...
- MrSteamTank, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2I think it's the Latin culture that results in terrible driving. I'm Latino and I have to admit most of us drive like maniacs(fortunately I lived most of my life in Canada so I don't drive very aggressively all things considered). Seriously, south of the border their are almost no rules when driving. No lanes, running through stop signs, and cutting people off are absolutely normal behaviours for the typical Latino driver. I've lived in Mexico(Toluca), Colombia(Bogota), and Uruguay(Montevideo) so I've seen a fairly wide spectrum of Latin driving. 8P
These Latino's come to North America and start driving like *****. Normally fines can quickly correct their bad driving, however, in some places like Miami where Latinos become the majority then it starts to degrade. 8P -
