- alexkball, on 01/26/2009, -1/+44This is just a list of suburbs of major cities.
Overland Park is not a city, it's just an extension of Kansas City, just a nicer, safer version of Kansas City with no black people. Sorry to be so crass but that's the truth. Go down the list you'll find the same thing over and over again.
1. Plymouth is just outside of Minneapolis.
3. Naperville is just outside of Chicago.
4. Irvine is just outside of L.A.
6. Norman is just outside of Oklahoma City.
7. Round Rock is just outside of Austin. (and from my experience...in no way a better place to live than Austin.)
Why not just title this article, "Move to the Suburbs!!!" and call it a day. - strictnein, on 01/26/2009, -7/+49MN rules. Seven of the top 45 cities.
Suck it, Wisconsin. - subliminali, on 01/26/2009, -6/+47apparently the best places to live also have absolutely nothing to do in them...
cities that are expensive to live in are that way because they're desirable locations with lots going on. Bite the bullet and pay more for your rent/house and live somewhere cool. - AtomicTheory, on 01/26/2009, -1/+31FTA: Ranking / Place / Population

100 Wayne, NJ 55,700 - socivitus, on 01/26/2009, -1/+30I live an hour away from 4 of the best cities in the U.S. and yet I reside in one of the worst ranked cities. That lower in lower middle-class always comes back to bite me.
- gl77, on 01/26/2009, -1/+20Piscataway NJ?
Piss Cat Away NJ? - CDollars, on 01/26/2009, -2/+20Jersey was mentioned multiple times... is this a joke?
- doitchinkstyle, on 01/26/2009, -2/+18irvine? the oc?
since when the hell is that affordable. - shinythings, on 01/26/2009, -6/+21Ah yes, South Central, or Compton would be fabulous places to live...
What? They're not on the list? - darladoon, on 01/26/2009, -2/+16precisely. i can walk less than 10 blocks and get anything from porn shops, to nepalese food, to independent hardware stores, to belgian beer stores. but in naperville, illionois? starbucks, starbucks, starbucks. and everyone's in their car, hurrying with their children, on their way to work.
Boring. - thentro, on 01/26/2009, -0/+14What a list of unlivable cities. Apple Valley, MN? It's just one big unrecognizable strip mall. I guess it's how you define it.
Best line: "In the center of the Twin Cities suburbs sits Apple Valley." What? - frankadeniken, on 01/26/2009, -0/+14Minnesota Wild?
- kyleforeman, on 01/26/2009, -2/+15No Oregon cities on the list? GTFO
- pkjohnson17, on 01/26/2009, -1/+13haha wow i've lived in 2 of the top 20 places to live.... who wold of known minnesota could be so awesome =)
- vertigo32, on 01/26/2009, -0/+10Isn't the #1 city -6 with a -25 windchill today?
Granted, my city (#27 - Ann Arbor) isn't doing much better today, but our Plymouth office seems to have weather issues every other week. - LonesomeFighter, on 01/26/2009, -0/+10my state isn't even listed in the top 100, therefore i agree with the list
- borez, on 01/26/2009, -2/+12After watching their video on Plymouth, to me it looks like a completely safe, boring, stagnant, nosey, do-goody, community based, suburban nightmare.
Don't know about you lot, but I like a bit of excitement in my life, you know, considering we only get one chance at it. - Larsonal777, on 01/26/2009, -1/+11LOL yes... suck it Wisconsin.
- michaelpinto, on 01/26/2009, -4/+14Piscataway, NJ? That's not living that being UNDEAD!
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -2/+11i'm offended des moines iowa isn't on there
- unusualbob, on 01/26/2009, -1/+10Cary and Chapel Hill, NC are good cities, but really I don't know why they would list them as being any better than Raleigh. Quite frankly Raleigh has more jobs and plenty of cheap housing, specifically in North Raleigh.
- bdejong11129, on 01/26/2009, -1/+10After reading the top 100 this list has be on crack.
There shouldn't be a single city from Michigan on that list, that state is in the dumper...While most states are having issues with the current economic crisis, Michigan is sporting a cool 10+% unemployment rate. - CoD4, on 01/26/2009, -0/+8elizabeth, nj?
- marksism, on 01/26/2009, -0/+8it's not that bad here! Just parts!
- l034me, on 01/26/2009, -0/+8Ugh Collin County, Tx is not that great.
- UnFriendlyFire, on 01/26/2009, -10/+18Texas - FTW!
13 of the top 100 - Ecuno, on 01/26/2009, -3/+11Dugg for being from the number 1 city.
- homercles337, on 01/26/2009, -1/+9This list is a joke.
- Hockey13, on 01/26/2009, -0/+8Eh Irvine is OK. It's a beautiful town, but the traffic situation is terrible compared to other southern Orange County towns. I know...bad traffic in Orange County is nothing compared to, say, bad traffic in northern New Jersey, but when there are 8-line-wide intersections everywhere on 50mph roads with poorly-designed traffic lights, going 1 mile down the road can be a tedious prospect.
- wepeel, on 01/26/2009, -0/+8Because Cary has a much lower crime rate. And you can't really use the jobs argument...just work in Raleigh and live in Cary.
- jayhawk88, on 01/26/2009, -5/+13Lol at Olathe and Overland Park cracking the Top 15, and Shawnee in the Top 50. Suck it Mizzou!
- theutopian, on 01/26/2009, -0/+7Clearly, they've never been to Valparaiso, Indiana. Best place I've ever lived.
Small town, with big city amenities. 1 hour from Chicago. Nice restaurants. Respected university in town. Beautiful in the Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Weather is not too bad, except in Winter. Incomes are good. Low crime. Nice culture. - darladoon, on 01/26/2009, -0/+7because avg home price = $750,000. and that's for one in the exelsior.
- subliminalurge, on 01/26/2009, -0/+7And yet Ames is. Having lived in both, I'd say Des Moines should be significantly higher on the list than Ames.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6It looks like there are *no* cities on the list because housing prices are a major factor: "Plentiful jobs, excellent schools, affordable housing - America's best small cities have all that and more." That right there will eliminate all cities. Basically the title is misleading: it should read "The Most Economically-Accessible Suburbs."
- Kravin, on 01/26/2009, -4/+10Inaccurate. Austin is amazing.
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -1/+7Brookline? ew.
- oboshoe, on 01/26/2009, -0/+6Well the list is the top 100 small cities to live in.
Comparing big and small cities is like apples and oranges. Most folks who like small cities would not be happy in a big city, and vice-versa. - fefu, on 01/26/2009, -1/+7Not one place in Ohio. I hope Governor Strickland takes notice. Sad, sad, sad. I remember the day when at least Columbus (or one of it's suburbs) would've made the list.
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+6for sure, especially the suburbs like urbandale and johnston.
- soupdawg30, on 01/26/2009, -0/+6What's Oregon?
/s - inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5Cary == "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees"
- Kravin, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5The only reason Round Rock is on the list is because it's attached to Austin, and housing has gotten retardedly expensive in the city.
Oh, and they have good schools. Blah blah blah. - tomarocco, on 01/26/2009, -1/+6This article should be called: "***** that are begging for people to move in."
- vertigo32, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5You don't need to be rich to live in an area where the average home value is $250,000. If the average is a quarter million dollars, you can find decent homes for $150,000 and fixer-uppers for $100,000 right now.
Of course, you might need to work hard to save money for a down payment...do things like buying a used car and paying it off, staying home instead of going out every nigh, etc.. Do you think someone just goes out and hands these so called 'rich' or 'elite' people fancy houses and cars?
It's a matter of priorities. Some people choose to buy toys, drive a new car, go out every Friday / Saturday night, go on vacations every six months, etc. Some people want to live in nice communities. There is no secret club, just care and self control when it comes to your money. - Nickolassc, on 01/26/2009, -1/+6My state (not the one showing in my profile) didn't make the list. Stay the hell out of my state and we'll both be happy :D
- gemlarin, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5I noticed NY only shows up a couple times on that list.
Dugg as accurate. - cavedog0, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5Lame, the three city's from Arizona are all suburbs of Phoenix.
- eRenee, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5Ft.Collins, Colorado? Number 2!
- snickysnack, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5Yeah, what the heck, where's Portland?
Moderate weather, good beer, nice people, doug firs...
They must have created this list based on some boring algorithm. -
