- Nintendesert, on 07/20/2009, -0/+68The Dallas airport is great to sleep in. I spent a night there, only raped twice.
- branchan, on 07/20/2009, -0/+40I slept in JFK before, it wasn't that bad come on. They basically just named the busiest airports in the world.
- katieface, on 07/20/2009, -1/+32I could never fall asleep in any airport. There'd be no doubt that some ***** would steal your bag.
- ceredron, on 07/20/2009, -1/+30apparently you've never been stranded at an airport before. You find ways to sleep, and friends to sleep with. I was stuck in Montreal for two days (weather+destination), and I made like four new friends, and we all huddled together and slept in turns and *****. Good times.
- jarjarbinx, on 07/20/2009, -2/+29They forgot to include the International Space Station.... Clogged bathrooms that may leave waste to float around....
- DLRULZ, on 07/20/2009, -1/+28So pretty much all of the busiest airports in the world are messed up and nasty...no surprise there...and if you're too cheap to stay at a hotel that's your problem.
- ceredron, on 07/20/2009, -0/+25I've been stuck twice, at both ends of the spectrum. Two nights in Montreal, one night in Chicago. O'Hare is a ***** disaster for stranded travelers... there's no seating, no room, and everything is hard. Montreal, on the other hand, was ***** bliss... they have an isolated third level, where people can sleep and security patrols every few minutes ensure your safety. Slept like a baby there.
- tcheck, on 07/20/2009, -0/+19It seems like these passengers that stayed overnight aren't used to anything less than a five star resort....
LAX isn't the best, but really now, it's not that bad. - MikeonTV, on 07/20/2009, -2/+17They obviously never traveled to Doha in Qatar. They have the quiet room right next to the smoking room ... therefor all you smell is smoke and all you hear is flatulence.
- Devine122, on 07/20/2009, -0/+13Sleep on the floor using your bag as a pillow.
- redfan, on 07/20/2009, -0/+13Hmm, I've spent a lot of time at O'Hare and never thought it was all that dirty, to be honest. Even Delhi wasn't too bad, relatively speaking.
Now Mumbai on the other hand... the less said about that airport, the better. - asskicker32, on 07/20/2009, -0/+11My least favorite airports to sleep in:
1. LHR - Heathrow - No power to charge my phone, no benches (only chairs with arms), and cleaners coming by every half hour waking you up telling you to move. Not to mention, only pre-security is open after 11pm or so, so youre stranded out there.
2. LAX - Los Angeles International - dirty, noisy and crowded
3. ORD - Chicago O'Hare - Way too noisy to actually sleep. Add in the ubiquitous arm-rests and maintenance people waking you up with the vacuums and you would be hard pressed to sleep.
4. IAD - Washington (Dulles) - Its always so freezing there and there is so much security, its insane
Most favorite
1. SFO - San Francisco - My home airport and I've easily spent 40+ hours there. Plenty of bathrooms, water fountains, long bench seats, power to charge your phones and computers. The floors are mostly not carpet, so there arent many vacuums and the place is new, so its kept clean.
2. PHL - Philadelphia - I sleep there all the time on connecting flights. Stuff is open late and open early, so its easy to get something to relax with. There are plenty of bench seats and lots of power. As long as your not flying Southwest, its cake to sleep there. - insanebrain, on 07/20/2009, -0/+11Airports aren't there to sleep in....you're doing it wrong.
- morcheeba, on 07/20/2009, -0/+11Heathrow, March 12th 1994:
http://www.nytimes.com/1994/03/12/world/2d-mortar- ...
We got locked in to one of the terminal buildings and weren't allowed to leave - the fear was that leaving might set off an unexploded mortar. Of course the chairs were uncomfortable, but we found some nice ones .. but since they were near the windows, the police didn't allow us to use them in case the blast wave would make the windows fall down on us. Basically everyone in the airport missed their flight, so each group had to send someone to start lining up around midnight for the ticket counters in hopes that when they opened the next morning, we might catch a flight... the rest of us tried to sleep, being prepared for a mortar to land on the roof.
The upside: with that as a yardstick, all subsequent travels have been just great! - Atario, on 07/20/2009, -0/+11I can confirm Sheremetyevo. When you get off the plane there, you really feel like you've landed in the old Soviet Union.
- omniiv, on 07/20/2009, -0/+10it really depends which terminal you stay in and what time of day it is. I stayed at Heathrow's newest terminal last year, it was clean and very comfortable.

- Hpot17, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9Denver international ftw
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -2/+11I wish my airport had a smoking room.
- boardthis, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9looks like you are kicking ass all over the world.
- blackjack06, on 07/20/2009, -0/+8I tried to sleep in Athens but the security guard kept kicking anyone that tried. What a dick.
- Smiley09, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7Worst airport? Rome Ciampino Airport.... It closes at midnight, but the last bus leaves at 11pm... So when your flight arrives at 11:30pm you have to sleep outside until the buses resume in the morning... It's in the middle of no where so you can't walk, there is nothing open near it, the closest thing was a gas station a kilometer or two away... which was closed... Oh, and there's a local army base, and soldiers stop to look at you, """playfully""" point their rifles at you....
- paradigmxx, on 07/20/2009, -3/+10I knew India would be on it - once you get off an air conditioned airplane this big grazing heatwave of putrid stink hits you in seconds - as you walk around it's like a dirty hellhole.
- idbjoshm, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6People still fly out of LAX? I prefer Ontario myself.
- Rotzooi, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6At least it's not over 9000.
- Sideshowslob, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6"Seating was awful, so I laid out on the floor. However I saw a rat roaming around so I didn't sleep much that night," Seanamazing said.
That would be an awesome name to have: "Hi my name is Sean . . . Sean Seanamazing." - maddprof, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6That's because they knew they would be doing us a favor flying a plane full of scientologists into a Scientology center.
- redfan, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6Not sure what airport lounges you've been in, but the ones I've seen are pretty nice. Assuming you're talking about either the business-class or first-class lounges.
Airport waiting areas (near the gates) are a different story, and are largely hit or miss. But if local hotels are charging $200+ for a single night's stay, I'll take my chances with the airport. - jordan314, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5Logan International in Boston. I tried sleeping on these separated, pointy chairs next to this perpetual motion rube goldberg art exhibit in the only terminal open overnight. It had steel ball bearings that dropped down a xelophone staircase. It made "bee bop bong boop bink" noises all night. I think someone finally figured out how to unplug it.
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5Theres no reason to have metal benches INSIDE the security check points. The only people that are allowed are in are travelers with tickets, security, employees and pilots. Its a dick move to have benches with arm rest too.
- mrpunman, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6THAT'S TWICE IN 1 NIGHT!!
- CityzenInsane, on 07/20/2009, -3/+8Every airport in India should be on this list. I always dread going there to visit relatives. Smelly, crowded, and filthy. But, India is one of the most beautiful places once you leave the cities and the crowded areas and get into the countryside.
- spongebue, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5Agreed. I stayed overnight in O'Hare, also on the list. Was it the best sleep I've ever had? Of course not. Did I still manage to sleep? You bet. The only other airport I stayed overnight in was Seattle, which I thought was worse. That vacuum went all through the night (I guess it's good that they vacuum, but not when I'm trying to sleep :P )
- Akairenn, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4I've slept in O'Hare.
Wasn't that bad at all. Definitely not the best though; next time United bones me, I hope I get stuck in an airport with carpeted floors. :p - tugger, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4I've had cockroaches walking over me in Miami Airport. Most Mia gates have about 20 seats meaning that everyone else has to stand.
All the london airports have been fine for sleeping.
But honestly Charles De Gaulle is by far the worst!! The Parisians are naturally unfriendly almost to the point of aggressiveness (and no, I'm not from the USA), and I've had bags stolen, my phone stolen, been verbally abused, seen 7 out of 8 toilet stalls closed (and the remaining one covered in pee, and no ass paper) the food halls are disgusting, the carpets are sticky, 10 gates sharing an area the size of a tennis court, plaster falling off the walls and domed ceiling... consistently the worst airport. - Banda7, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4The Minneapolis airport is great and has clean bathrooms, but there is a chance youll be getting suprise butt sex...
- sayuwantarevolu, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Heathrow isn't too bad... I slept there during a five hour layover....they have weird, plastic-y, IKEA-like couches now...
- RubberBinder, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3unfortunately some flights are only available out of LAX and it's usually a lot cheaper because it's such a major stop for most airlines.
- Twinnie, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Slept in Vienna once, woke up to find myself covered in flies and when I went to take a dump some other guy had the same idea (in the cubicle next to mine), it sounded like he was ***** out his own soul.
- QreepyBORIS, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Hah, been in the Charles du Gaulle twice. When I flew in, it just so happened that there were a couple dozen people protesting god-knows-what while banging loudly on those clear blue drums that hold spring water.
I would indeed not be able to sleep in such conditions. - Cybird88, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Yea, DIA is the *****. Clean, comfy seats, plenty of bars.
- kakwakas, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Chicago O'Hare is the best I've ever slept in, and they have the best employee cafeteria, too! I really don't see why these people are knocking it.
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3" 1. Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris ... the dirtiest airport in the world and "worse than a Third World airport", Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport is reportedly smelly, hot, full of homeless people, lacks comfortable seating and is prone to losing luggage."
Why limit this appraisal to the airport : THE WHOLE PUTRID PARIS STINKS. PERIOD !
In 1981 , already. I can tell - I worked and lived there, 12 long months.
- Mardala, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3On my recent trip I had a layover in ICN (Seoul, South Korea) and it was nice. Free wifi, free internet cafes, electronics stores, book stores, coffee shops, restaurants and there is even a 2nd level "lounging area" where travelers can have a snooze quietly and comfortably.
The comments about Mumbai are not accurate. The international airport has a bunch of restaurants open (at least @ 3:30 am when I was last there) and a fair number of shops. They look brand new so it may have been an upgrade in the last year? Sure changed a lot from when I was last there in 1995.
And LAX still sucks. - aliengoods, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Agreed. I've been to LAX, JFK, Heathrow, OHare, and Rome, and while they're not particularly comfortable, they're not bad.
Although I will say kicking people out of the airport at night does tick me off. When you're flying internationally and have the hours of 10pm to 6am waiting for a connection, what are you supposed to do? One time I was flying out of Zurich at 6:30am, and they say you need to be there 2 hours early for international travel, and the buses and trains didn't start up until sometime after 6, so I took the last train to the airport and spent the night there. I met 5 other people who were in the same boat, so we all slept together for security. No one gave us any problems. - snowdog, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3"While Paris’s Charles de Gualle was voted the worst airport to sleep in, airports in Europe, the US and India were also mentioned."
Paris is in Europe! - spectre_25gt, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3LAX is a 20-minute shuttle ride for me. Ontario is a 60 minute drive plus parking fees. I'll stick with LAX, thanks.
- Halsfield, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Some of the quotes used in that article seem a little questionable when it comes to their authenticity (ie the eat my own face comment).
- sprkoolguy, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I recently spent some time in Sheremetyevo Airport outside Moscow, the article vastly exaggerates. The airport wasn't great but it wasn't nearly as terrible as it was in the Soviet Era which is how it sounds in this list.
