- Lunarbunny, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Am I the only person who thought "Strogg?"
- AvidPreatorian, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3being born in Poland I have to say that our flag might not be the most creative but it is definitely "inspiring" to us. The white stands for tears, the red stands for blood. "With blood and tears, we will persevere." - as my grandpa, WW2 veteran used to say.
- Ellipsys, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Isn't there in some cases supposed to be an eagle on it, in some cases? Maybe that's the one they should have used.
- Justice101, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1A lot of Polish people use that one, because we generally agree it looks better/badass.
- myak, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Both are valid flags, without (simple red & white) and with coat of arms (the eagle you are talking about). Of course, for the sole purpose of article, the author could not take the one with it because then, there would be nothing to laugh at.
- myak, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1[damn it, wrong reply level]
- Ellipsys, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Isn't there in some cases supposed to be an eagle on it, in some cases? Maybe that's the one they should have used.
- Shrubber, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1The flag's made to support special people, alright. Special People from Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
- ostracize, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Looked to me like two people with their backs to each other taking a large step in opposite directions.

- lenninct, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3if so for my town named "CUMMING, 30040" would havea pretty cool flag...

Whoever wrote this seems ignorant of the true history and use of the swastika symbol. It was used by indigenous peoples on this continent, in Nepal, India...elsewhere. The swastika as used by Hitler was rotated...- crazydiode, on 02/18/2008, -5/+53I think the article was just a fun list without trying to be judgmental. Nazis used, as you said, a rotated Swastika.
- Zarokima, on 02/18/2008, -10/+41The thing about it, though, is that the majority of people just see ANY swastika and think "OMG NAZIS!" so, ignorant or informed of its historical use, the author is right.
- swiftheart, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5That's only a problem for Westerners. The swastika has no negative connotations in Asia--where the majority of Jains live.
An Indian friend of mine gave me a box of high quality gold-foil wrapped candy. The box has a huge swastika on it. Strange to my western eyes, but nothing of note for an Indian. - JusticeFriend, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1swiftheart... IT'S A TRAP!!
- swiftheart, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5That's only a problem for Westerners. The swastika has no negative connotations in Asia--where the majority of Jains live.

- TheHighPrivate, on 02/18/2008, -8/+141You didn't catch the part about "a couple decades of putzes with armbands and your 1,000-year legacy is tainted forever."
- satanswetnipple, on 02/19/2008, -22/+7Yet no one in USA and England seems to relate the cross to the past thousand years or so where people wore crosses on their chests, held shields and banners with crosses while carving up people with swords. Or the less overt crosses around their necks as they dropped tons of napalm on little children trying to find food for their families.
Centuries of death under the cross and it is fine, while the swastika gets two or three decades of use by some ultra nationalist right wingers and it is scarred for eternity?- Syric, on 02/19/2008, -0/+12Well that was kind of the "real" cross. They were doing it for Christianity. Hitler's use of the swastika is arguably more of a bastardization of the "real" swastika.
- satanswetnipple, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8There have been many swastikas throughout history, and from many regions including parts of Europe. There have been clockwise, anticlockwise, square, diamond and circular.
- koopertrooper, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1it's because the aforementioned countries have convinced the public that the cross is good (most people in those countries are also Christian)
- satanswetnipple, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1Which is why I used it as an example. The two terms we use here are "Propaganda" and "Hypocrisy".
The propaganda works both directions with this comparison. The cross is promoted as a good symbol, while the swastika is vilified. It does not matter that the swastika has other, sometimes religious meanings, it is just a good target to aim the hate propaganda at. Unfortunately, simpletons in every culture and every country eat up propaganda as if it were candy coated chocolate.
- satanswetnipple, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1Which is why I used it as an example. The two terms we use here are "Propaganda" and "Hypocrisy".
- tech42er, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I was with you until you got to the "less overt" uses. The Crusades were a war where people fought for the cross. That's a very good point. But the Vietnam and/or Korean wars weren't fought for the cross. You just generalized all Americans as Christian. What the ***** is your problem?
- akamurph, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0I fear you have some hate issues.
- chrispeters, on 02/18/2008, -13/+10Not rotated, reflected. The Swastika has rotational symmetry.
- stormgren, on 02/18/2008, -1/+14Nope, rotated. The nazi one is on its corner, at a 45-degree angle from the classic one.
- wrathchilde, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Oh, THAT rotated.
- stormgren, on 02/18/2008, -1/+14Nope, rotated. The nazi one is on its corner, at a 45-degree angle from the classic one.
- Daiken, on 02/18/2008, -1/+13The Nazi Swastika was rotated 45 degrees so that that a corner sticks out toward the bottom.
- koopertrooper, on 02/19/2008, -8/+5it really doesn't matter what origin it was, most people (me included) automatically associate it with Nazis, it doesn't matter if its rotated, it still looks like it
- Misaiato, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7If swastikas offend you, don't go on a road trip in Japan if the car has a Navi. You'll see one for every temple and shrine nearby. There are a *significant* number of shrines and temples wherever you go in Japan...
- jozb, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1So if i go outside in the US/Europe with a giant Swastika on my t-shirt, will i get killed? I'm not joking, just want to know.
- ronaldinho, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Not all Cracked writers are scholars, only some actually know their stuff
- crazydiode, on 02/18/2008, -5/+53I think the article was just a fun list without trying to be judgmental. Nazis used, as you said, a rotated Swastika.

Saint Patrick - After six years of slavery he escaped to Gaul (France), became a Christian and went back to Ireland to convert them to Christianity. (St. Patrick (real name Maewyn) was Born in Wales and taken into slavery in Ireland by a marauding a tribe.)
Aneurin Bevan - The man responsible for the formation of the British National Health Service.
Francis Lewis - Signatory of the US 'Declaration of Independence' as one of the representatives from New York.
Morgan Jones - Was the main power in the building of the railway system in Texas. Without him Fort Worth would be a minor town and Denver, Colorado would not be linked to the Gulf of Mexico.
Not too shabby for a country with a population of less than 3 million people!
- FrankieAngels, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Oh and.......
- generalhooha, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3+ you have John Cale
- Manuelmty, on 02/18/2008, -1/+16In Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, the flag salutes you!
- mrtdot, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2I live in the US but my town stole your flag; we were settled by the Welsh prior the revolution. The name of the town is Bala Cynwyd, the name of the two towns in Whales the settlers came from.
- FrankieAngels, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1Interesting to hear about your town's heritage - just a shame you live there and are still unable to correctly spell the country!
Whales are very large Cetaceans and WALES is a country.
- FrankieAngels, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1Interesting to hear about your town's heritage - just a shame you live there and are still unable to correctly spell the country!
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4I've always loved Wales's flag. Totally awesome.
Also, aren't Dr. Who and Torchwood filmed there? If so, that's important.- FrankieAngels, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2They're both filmed in Cardiff - the capital city.

- vatd112, on 02/18/2008, -8/+109I am Jain and I am glad that the author knows that Jainism did not steal the flag from Hitler and that in fact it was the other way around. Jains were there thousands and thousands of years before Hitler.

- tech42er, on 02/19/2008, -5/+4Seriously, who is so dense to think the Jains stole the flag from Hitler? That's incredibly retarded,
- Pritchard, on 02/19/2008, -4/+1How hard has your culture worked for you?
Jain: Thousands of Years of Culture.
Nazis: A few years of Genocide.
I think the Nazis did a better job here...

- teamr, on 02/18/2008, -25/+8Uhh....i'm from Bermuda (the flag on the pic up there). Yeah our flag might not be great because we're still part of the British Empire so we must have the Union Jack, but when I wake up i'm within walking distance of three of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. So you can make fun of our flag all you want. I hope your cool flags keep you warm in your snow covered countries. I'm going outside to enjoy a cool drink in my yard. Might even do it without any pants.
- tmjoen, on 02/18/2008, -1/+35Be nice or I'll activate the triangle again.

- ryan83189, on 02/18/2008, -2/+81The Libyan flag is easy to make in mspaint.
- Daniel591992, on 02/18/2008, -2/+6I bet you the guy that came up with it is a millionaire too!
- Linake, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3He probably gets the money from the royalties alone! Michael's Crafts would owe him for construction paper, bristol board. . .but only if they use 'Libyan Forest' as their green.
- gbro, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1It didn't show up for me, all I saw was the green background.
- Pritchard, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Hard to make in Paint.NET - I must say, MS-Paint has one of the best color pickers there are, in my opinion. I'm sure Photoshop has tons of better ones, but just being able to scroll through hue and saturation makes things so easy.

- adrianmonk, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2It's a.... ouch... it hurts to say this, but... it's a cross-section of a penis.
- macweirdo42, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2I finally understand why they're so ***** off. I mean, they've got the penis on the flag, but they've got the massive AK-47 over it. Clearly they're compensating for something there.

Hot damn! Wales has a badass flag! - borez, on 02/18/2008, -13/+21The British flag within the Bermuda flag is called the Union Flag. It is not the Union Jack.
It's only called the Union Jack when it's flying ( as a jack ) from a ship..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_flag- girlpirate, on 02/18/2008, -5/+19perhaps you should have read the wiki you linked to.
"The issue of whether to use the term "Union Flag" or "Union Jack" is a matter of some debate. One view is that "Union Jack" should only be used for the flag when it is flown as a jack (a small flag flown at the bow of a ship),[1] but it is not universally accepted that the "Jack" of "Union Jack" is a reference to such a jack flag and is only an educated guess.[2] Since "Union Jack" is a proper noun, the term is equally correct when the flag is flown on land."- borez, on 02/18/2008, -9/+2Universally accepted...not be me it's not, and not by a lot of other British people.
- wrathchilde, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5The-rest-of-the-universally accepted. OK?

- ComradeGoby, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2I agree. It is basically Antarctica's flag with a few stars thrown in and Kosovo instead on Antarctica.

Not inspiring to: 1/2 the world who's countries were owned by the English. And the rest of the world, who couldnt give a *****. - BadassCheese, on 02/18/2008, -2/+8Rome>British Empire
- Syric, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2Not in terms of size... the Roman Empire's not even one of the 20 biggest empires of all time.
- FDDIcent, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Ya you had the biggest, but rome had the strongest.
- DogBotherer, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1But both the British and the Roman empires came to grief, and the American one seems to be on the rocks/ropes. There's a lesson here... Sadly the next empire is likely to be even less benign/more malevolent than all three of these.
- howea, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0Only to end up in mediocrity

- MutatedNantuko, on 02/18/2008, -7/+5Ehh, I didn't think that was too funny.
- RedNeckerson, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5Polish, huh?
- Adsmi, on 02/18/2008, -14/+4There is two flags that really belong in that list and were missed. Flag of EU and flag of USA. As pure look goes I find both extremely bad looking and uninspiring.
- shedtroll, on 02/18/2008, -2/+4look at the Sicilian flag, the Manx will be *****...
- ronaldinho, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1the first time I looked at it, I was like WTF
- CrudeDarkness, on 02/18/2008, -9/+4what about the USA naval "don't tread on me" flag?
http://www.flags.net/UNST.htm- Tssst, on 02/19/2008, -5/+1That snake looks like someone already tread on it. Must be the Japs!
- Picaroon, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5It ***** kicks ass. I don't know what you're talking about--the Naval Jack is sweet.
- fantasticFlan, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4The snake loses something without historical context, but the slogan is still pretty poignant.
- Typhoon2009, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3Okay this was just hilarious, "The perfect flag to wrap yourself in while sitting in a damp hovel, smoking rat-poison-infused tobacco under a 20-watt bulb, hoping some party hack shoots you because you can't afford a noose."
- EarlOfLade, on 02/18/2008, -8/+3Are there any flags that inspire at all, I mean they are just a piece of cloth with some symbolism attached, why get worked up at all?
- pinguwin, on 02/18/2008, -2/+4Many are inspired by a flag. You've answered your question by adding 'with some symbolism attached'. That's why they do inspire. Why should anyone be moved by a book...it's just a bunch of words after all. Words and images have power to inspire.
- EarlOfLade, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Then how does anyone know that the flags presented in the article was not inspiring to people just because the author was not inspired?
- frogodilosauras, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0Exactly.
- adrianmonk, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0Maybe "inspiring" is subjective, so that the author's opinion that a particular flag is not inspiring is valid just as is someone else's opinion that it is.
- Swanny614, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Maybe it's just a ***** comedy article so who gives a *****.
- EarlOfLade, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Then how does anyone know that the flags presented in the article was not inspiring to people just because the author was not inspired?
- bdbr, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Oh, c'mon, you didn't think that Wales flag was pretty badass?
- pinguwin, on 02/18/2008, -2/+4Many are inspired by a flag. You've answered your question by adding 'with some symbolism attached'. That's why they do inspire. Why should anyone be moved by a book...it's just a bunch of words after all. Words and images have power to inspire.
- j2002, on 02/18/2008, -8/+2The polish flag has an eagle on it
- DonJohnTom, on 02/18/2008, -9/+4i always wondered what was up with my countries flag (Canada) i mean a maple leaf wtf?!
- pinguwin, on 02/18/2008, -2/+10As one from the U.S. I hate to say this :-), but I think the Canadian flag is the best looking flag I've seen.
- satanswetnipple, on 02/19/2008, -3/+7The Canadian flag is envied by many around the world because it is simple and is attractive. Try having the Australian flag. The Australian government at the time wanted to copy New Zealand because New Zealand had a new flag. They had a competition, and chose an entry that was/were individually created by two Australians and one New Zealander. I bet you can't guess what the flag was. It was the New Zealand flag. Oh, they added a few points to the stars, and added a couple of extra stars where they could... and they dropped the colour in the stars, but it is the same bloody flag!
For decades now New Zealand has been debating changing their flag because they are sick of the mix ups this causes. - lovekudu, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1'The Australian government at the time wanted to copy New Zealand because New Zealand had a new flag.'
satanswetnipple: Do you have a reference for that?
Didn't think so.- nynety, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2You didn't give him time to answer.

- Buddhist, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3You're doing it wrong.
- Niubai, on 02/18/2008, -2/+6I'm brazilian but ... Brazilian flag is terrible, could be in that list too. The idea is original, but it has a terrible combination of colors. At least we have mulatas, beaches and caipirinhas, so we don't have to look to our flag all the time.
- DogBotherer, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3And some of the world's most beautiful women, some of the world's most beautiful animals, some of the world's most beautiful scenery and the world's most beautiful martial art:
http://www.capoeirascience.com/clips.html - Linake, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I did a project about Brazil in grade 5, and I have to say that I have loved the flag ever since. Maybe it just brings back good memories of pencil crayons and safety scissors.
- Daniel591992, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I agree, I like the flag as well

- appleseed1234, on 02/18/2008, -2/+33We might as well have a script that auto-submits every Cracked article as soon as it's posted.
- Hyperion1144, on 02/19/2008, -0/+17You mean we don't?
- bpacana, on 02/18/2008, -3/+4This had me cracking up about the Sicilian flag: "If you ain't had bread from a Gorgon's asshole, then you ain't had bread." that is comedy.
- banido, on 02/18/2008, -4/+45In Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Flag disgraces you.
- MiamiRox, on 02/18/2008, -1/+14Dugg for Wallonia'a big red *****.
That's right, I went there. - tweetsa, on 02/18/2008, -7/+1I think the canadian flag is terrible. I say this as a canadian too.
- CaviMike, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Without maple syrup, there would be no IHOP. But then again, I think your flag is missing a couple leaves.
- RedNeckerson, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4The Canadian flag is unique and immediately recognizable. I think it's a good looking flag.
- adooga, on 02/18/2008, -20/+2Pics or they don't exist.
Seriously though, this article is kind of meaningless without pictures unless you already know all the flags in question.
Also, my 2 cents: NZ, Australia and any other flags with Union Jack in the corner are gay as hell. U.S. flag aint that ***** hot visually either.- Swanny614, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7Well, it, had pictures didn't it? So the point is kind of moot.
- adooga, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1I didn't see them.
- Pritchard, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2You're blind? Or stupid and blocked all images from Cracked.

- Linake, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8I was thinking the same thing! There had better be significance behind that, or else I'll have to assume they're trying to assassinate my eyeballs.
- Pritchard, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1Yup. Sniper Rifle targeting me's the first thing that came to mind. Circle sticks out like all holy hell.
