- Sillywombat, on 07/18/2009, -1/+27This gives me the urge to play SimCity.
Is that normal? - cyberdork, on 07/18/2009, -1/+13And they missed the famous (not so ancient) Kowloon Walled City:
http://www.klnwcity.org/intro/large/klnwcity/80/80 ... - RudeTurnip, on 07/18/2009, -3/+12As long as it's SimCity 2000 and none of the later micro-managing abominations, yes.
- DarthVolta, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9Does Noerdlingen, Germany remind any one of the city they used in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?
Ok, wait, I just checked the Wikipedia page. Hell yes:
"The closing sequence when the Wonkavator is flying above the factory is footage of Nördlingen in Bavaria, Germany."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willy_Wonka_&_the ... - inactive, on 07/18/2009, -2/+9Lets build bridges, not walls.
- pinguz, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6Kowloon was the other way round. They did not choose to barricade themselves, instead they were forced to stay within the boundaries by everyone else around them.
(Edit: I meant to reply to cyberdork) - BalancingAct, on 07/18/2009, -1/+6They've missed out an example of the UK, so here's an ancient map of the city of Chester showing it's walls:
http://www.chesterwalls.info/gallery/oldmaps/index ... - teazalamode, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5I was in Dubrovnik Croatia, a couple months ago on a cruise. its a real gem! sweet
- DeadliestSnatch, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!
- IKIRY0, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4we're pretty used to that here in europe - we dont have cities designed to get you asap to the nearest mall....
- Dumbledorito, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4Then there was Hadrian's Wall...
Consul Georgius: I say, this is interesting! There seems to be a large orange hedge moving towards us.
Centurion Blackadder: Uh, thats not a hedge, Consul. That's the Scots. - piieerrrree, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4My thoughts exactly.
- MonkeyNews, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Assassin's Creed pulled off some really beautiful walled cities too:

Acre: http://features.cgsociety.org/stories/2007_10/assa ... - rockets, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Where's San Juan, Puerto Rico????
- newquayweb, on 07/23/2009, -0/+2it's a nice way to preserve one's culture!
- lydiasky, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2Awesome. That's the one thing I find lacking in the US - the hundreds and thousands of years of culture reflected in the architecture.
- mHtt, on 07/18/2009, -2/+4They left out the only one in North America:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_City
Booooo-uuuuurrnnnnnssss! - Frostek, on 07/18/2009, -1/+3Good for keeping out zombies!
Also I'm not sure that the Maginot Line in itself was defeated. As far as I recall the Germans just went around it... Good idea, but not completely implemented. - 0siris, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I visited Carcason in March. Its sort of like Mideval Times crossed with a county fair, complete with funnel cake cotton candy and lord of the rings memorabilia. It was the most disgraceful historic site I have ever been to.
- Chohdry, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Good they included Lahore...
Pieces of history can still been seen.
The fort is a world heritage site.. - inactive, on 07/18/2009, -2/+4I knew the Jonas brothers were bad, but putting a wall around your city?
- DRT23, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2What's the purpose of those spikes on the Japanese wall?
Doesn't seem much of a climber deterrant...haha. Or cosmetically. - falconear, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2I wonder if Walled cities will ever make a comeback? I'm assuming a time will come when large scale society will break down, and only isolated city states will remain. Think we'll build walls around them? It wouldn't help much against fighter or bomber attacks, but they could control who enters the city from the ground. I guess it's fair to say (especially noting our plans for walls on the border) that walls have become a tool of law enforcement and not the military.
- D1Foley, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Dugg for the pictures, not the commentary.
- flipdoubt, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Rhodes?? (Rodos)
- beloitpiper, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2The walled city of Derry
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1106/1170031496_70e ... - matude, on 07/18/2009, -1/+3Whoa that was a letdown. There are hundreds of such cities in Europe alone, not to mention the whole world, why did they add so few?
- ace429k, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2***** you and your WalMart Gift Card.
- falconear, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Actually, I was thinking of Civilization. Isn't it the invention of gunpowder that makes your walled cities obsolete in that game?
- BotchaMcCoola, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2Did I overlook Baghdad? Hasn't the US spent billions walling it? Maybe the bullet holes make it hard to keep attractively maintained?
- fatbobsmith, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2St. Augustine, Florida is walled as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Augustine,_Florid ... - Kohaxx, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1It's a necessary precaution.
- AmericanGunner, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g3GRrg2cIM
- Mujokan, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2By your name maybe you heard about that through William Gibson (like me)?
- 4AntiStupid, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1It wasn't a very a good idea either. It sucked up massive resources for something that was useless once crossed. It's a classic "all your eggs in one basket" situation.
- sooperdooper, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1I just got mad deja vu from reading your comment and I don't know why.
- RedSaint, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1They kinda work in the same way. At least the Great Belt bridge here in Denmark does. It's the only way to cross the belt, so if I can't pay to pass it, I'm stuck on either Sealand or Funen :(
- makemylink, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2thats great to keep the joneses away wall city is required...
- inactive, on 07/30/2009, -0/+1wtf? Did you even read the article? 4th down
- sooperdooper, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2Let's build bridges that go INTO walls.
That'll learn 'em. - bradleyland, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2Normal? Well, that depends. Are you going to play one of the more recent Sims games and erect a series of walls around a helpless avatar until he/she defecates all over themselves and eventually dies, or are you going to build a happy, engaging home environment?
- Nekogao, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Ahhh, brings back the memories from Shenmue 2. Will Lan Di ever get his comeuppance? Guess we'll never know. I'm off to find some sailors...
- CallMeRooster, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Buried because that site has video ads with sound that autoplay.
Annoying! - Nekogao, on 07/19/2009, -1/+2Not to mention York!
Linkage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York_city_walls - JasonQpublic, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1Man, I've got to visit Europe. Awesome!
- votic, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1when I read this I misread as "keeping out the jonases." and got really reeally ***** excited.
- oskarnijs, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1Left out Heusden:

And Naarden:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ie=U ... - votic, on 07/18/2009, -0/+0i love those guys...
- rockets, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1And so is Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Like that for 500 years now....
