- divinediva, on 11/06/2009, -2/+25South Dakota is the most awesome place.
- KimballO, on 11/06/2009, -6/+23Almost as popular as North Dakota.
- FishHammer, on 11/06/2009, -0/+12They don't mention you have to drive through hundreds of miles of desolate emptiness to get to the pretty stuff. Coming from Minnesota at least.
- sonali123, on 11/06/2009, -0/+12Stunning Place...
- amcnair, on 11/06/2009, -0/+9I tell anyone who will listen; this is the best driving trip in America. We went from Sioux Falls to Rapid City with the cruise control set at 95 mph and the radar detector didn't go off once in nearly 350 miles. We never saw single state trooper. South Dakota is a beautiful place and a wonderful state to visit.
If you do this trip, be sure to hit Skyline Rd. in Rapid City at sunset or sunrise. It runs up to the delightfully tacky dinosaur park and it features some spectacular vistas. - crea8iveart, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8very nice place!!
- Mayday, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8Pictures of Mt Rushmore really don't do it justice. Unbelievable accomplishment, especially considering the time period it was done in. The Badlands are also definitely worth seeing.
- joio, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Olson began her career at Badlands National Park as a fee collector and moved to Mount Rushmore National Memorial in 1992. While at Mount Rushmore, she served as park ranger, education coordinator, assistant chief of interpretation and chief of interpretation.
- amcnair, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Yeah, but that emptiness is awfully pretty once you get across the river.
- yttrstein, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Seems like the kind of thing that would be in a pamphlet that would convince Clark Griswold to take his family on another vacation.
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Not only that, but the people building the Crazy Horse memorial are actually going against everything Crazy Horse stood for: the protection of the Black Hills. The chief would think this carving is an abomination.
- wrathbone, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4AWESOME!
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Brought to you by the South Dakota Office of Tourism.
- wbrns, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4This kind of stuff makes me look forward to retirement!
- Eorster, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Your comment makes me glad I don't have to retire in order to see stuff like this.
- UselessTrivia, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4They don't actually WANT to finish that thing. It's basically permanent employment for an entire community. Or at least permanent employment for a handful of them and seasonal employment for the rest.
- askantik, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4If it was so beautiful, why did you go 95 the whole way?
- themagicfetus, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4If you go to Crazy Horse just be aware that its not part of the national park system and you have to pay something like $20 to park. That really puts a dent in the wallet when the daily food/whiskey budget is $5. I was a little disappointed when I got there but I feel a little better knowing my donation gets them closer to finishing.
- wend0144, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4That's funny, because if you aren't from CA...the experience is reversed. And believe me, the respectable school in this area isn't San Diego State. So, I guess it's all relative.
<joke>
And if you need proof, just go ahead and look at how you spelled that last word of yours.
</joke> - robweber, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3I thought the same thing too. I paid my $20 to get in, then looked a pictures of the monument today compared to 10-15 years ago. I was not impressed.
- d3dm, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4One man's boring life is another man's idea of a vacation. I'll take nice folks that talk about the weather, sports, and hunting over the smug hipster urban jackass any day of the week.
- geoman2k, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3i have doubts they are ever going to finish that thing. i was there like 10 years ago and unless that photo is way out of date, there hasn't been a lick of progress.
- iwhitness, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3really I think Mount Rusmore looks just like it does on a postcard just bigger of course. With countless relatives and friends coming to visit it always happens the same: we drive for an hour to get there, pay $10 to park, walk up to the carving, after 30 seconds of looking at the carving whomever I'm ushering goes "hmm, well that's cool. let's go." best time I've had up there was with my back turned to the carving and watching a forest fire get put out with slurry bombers. maybe I'm just too jaded having lived here my whole life.
- Eorster, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3If your on a budget you can actually see it from the highway, but you won't get an appreciation for its true size.
- supertod, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Wow I've been on this road trip, almost exactly..
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Boy Eddy, you're sure looking.....fit.
- fms45, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I am going to visit that place in one month.
- chillibabe, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Seems adventurous
- neognostic, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2There is beauty in everything, you just have to appreciate the simple things. I have driven many thousands of miles in the states above. While they don't have the stunning beauty of the Tetons, they have a tranquility, and even serenity in their endless fields. Old barns, quiet isolated towns and wildlife everywhere.
- backwardscompat, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Wow, that looks great
- Speedy7, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3I like Death Valley.
- amcnair, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Because it's fun to drive fast.
- askantik, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2You drove all the way there without knowing what to expect or where to go?
Fail. - NovaBandit, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2"southwest segment of South Dakota"
Too bad about the rest of the state... - majin23x, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I lived in South Dakota most of my life too.
Lived in Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Rapid City.
Rapid and the Black Hills is definitely the place to visit. - askantik, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Speaking of Sturgis, there is a tiny town in Mississippi with the same name that has a motorcycle rally every year. It's funny, for a couple years I knew about it and didn't realize it was a rendition of SD's.
- WhoDoneIt, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Almost good enough to make a biography, too bad it wasn't a *little* more exciting.
- SunCrushr, on 11/06/2009, -3/+4I was born in South Dakota in a town called Watertown and I have so many wonderful memories of my years there. It's a beautiful state, unfortunately their politics left something to be desired as they swing far into religious right territory too much.
- UselessTrivia, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I lived in South Dakota for most of my life until I left for college.
It's a beautiful state, at least in the black hills and along the rivers. Most of eastern, northern and central south dakota is a flat stretch of boring nothing, though.
The largest city is Sioux Falls, which is population ~140,000. Nice place to grow up and by no means a small town, but nothing too spectacular, either.
Oh, and for all you out-of-staters who always get this wrong....the capital of South Dakota is pronounced like PIER....not PEE-AIR.
And don't forget to stop in Wall Drug for some free ice water. - Nishnabotna, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2If you think that's desolate, you have never been thru southern Utah/Arizona.
- LoudMusic, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I've driven through both the Dakotas. The Grasslands and Badlands are really quite beautiful, and different from the painted desert of Arizona. If you're into road trips and natural explorations I recommend it. Run over to Devil's tower in Wyoming while you're out that way.
- bigpixl, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Next time, hire a travel agent.
- novenator, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Forgot the Badlands. Pretty magical place, full of photo potential.
- Thuktun, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Wall Drug is far more entertaining to children than adults. I say that having visited it multiple times as both.
- Mayday, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1"really I think Mount Rusmore looks just like it does on a postcard just bigger of course" Well it is a picture so I would assume it would look the same. The point I was trying to make is that the pictures don't necessarily capture the magnitude of it's size. I suppose some people look at it and think "Big deal...faces carved into rock", and others look at and try and imagine the creation process of the sculpture.
- Thuktun, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Or look across and realize you're looking at faces in the side of a MOUNTAIN and the perspective suddenly hits you.
Besides, hiking in the Needles is much more impressive. We have a hard time out-doing nature. - novenator, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Some of my ancestors are from there. Back in the 20s-40s, SD wasn't such a political backwater.
- groo68, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Try Kansas.
- upnorthgirl, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1Just did a lot of this trip in May and it was outstanding. Highly recommend staying at Custer or camping in National Forest. And check out the "pigtails" and look back though every tunnel.
