- thenorwegian, on 10/28/2009, -0/+28lol homocidal. Homicidal?
- eastwood24, on 10/27/2009, -0/+28Cyprus has a population of 800,000 and a murder rate of .2 (per 100000). This means roughly that one and a half unfortunate people a year gets murdered there.
- ChronicColonic, on 10/27/2009, -4/+29The sad truth behind that picture, he wasn't dead when they took it. Someone thought it would be a great background for an infographic. They went to Staples and bought those tent cards and price tags and set them up with the information. Poor guy cried for help as they we leaving to get the supplies. He was begging for help when they returned. They told him not to move...he'd ruin the shot! By the time they were done, they finally called for an ambulance...but it was too late.
Whatever it takes to get your point across I guess. - idarkiswordi, on 10/28/2009, -0/+23Ok, I understand what this graphic is trying to show but the delivery just sucks...
- thetruckert, on 10/27/2009, -1/+22Would moving to Colombia be considered attempted suicide?
- DrNemo, on 10/28/2009, -3/+20The only thing that is really mandatory is the military service. You don't have to keep the rifle with you at home and you can't carry it unless you're in service or going to service. You can't go to a private range and shoot it. You should fear prosecution if you actually load your military rifle without having military orders. Switzerland doesn't allow self-defense and the carry of guns. You can't carry a locking blade, and you will get some strange looks if you strap a blade to your belt. If you think it's a country of gentlemen that carries their arms at the grocery store, you're wrong. Switzerland just looks like every other European country. It's even worst I guess because of the slavery of mandatory service. Enjoy the freedom in USA while you still can and stop having fantasies about this country.
- KingGorilla, on 10/28/2009, -0/+14A simple graph could have conveyed that information better
- thetruckert, on 10/27/2009, -1/+13I'd rather be the whole than the half.
- noyurawk, on 10/28/2009, -0/+11The data is interesting but the presentation blows. It's about as intuitive as finding something in my messy bedroom.
- ThatDeadDude, on 10/28/2009, -0/+8Yay! South Africa wins!
- InquisitiveCT, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6I didn't realize the tags on the bottom right and thought those were the highest rates worldwide, i was astonished at the jump from 0.2 to 69. lol.
- digitalArtform, on 10/28/2009, -0/+6Wow, it only took a 30 hour Lynda.com tutorial to learn how to navigate that image.
Computers make life easier. - LilJimmyNordin, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5Maybe they just kill the faigelehs?
- Barackalypse, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5For comparison's sake, South Africa is only slightly more violent than New Orleans which weighed in at 64 homicides per 100k people.

Whats next, a youtube video of a static image of text? For ***** sake, take a god damn math class and learn how to display information.
- WordsnCollision, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3Which country is number 999?
- prisoner24601, on 10/28/2009, -11/+14Don't forget 1.2 for Switzerland, a country with *mandatory* gun ownership. As part of their national defense policy citizens are *required* to have a fully-automatic assault rifle in their homes.
No, I'm not bringing this up as a suggestion that this would be a good policy for America. In fact, as someone who on a philosophical level supports gun rights, I find myself unspeakably disappointed that our national character is, on average, so much less moral and stable than the Swiss, at least in (the indisputable and measureable) terms of homicide. To say the Swiss are an example of what gun laws should be like is correct only in as much as we are also willing to accept that perhaps some of the other social values they have are worth adopting too. - inactive, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3its was in my mind too.Guessing they spent all the budget paying the guy and the cards.
- waspbr, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2not sure you know what you are talking about, only the people that have undergone military training ae allowed to have guns, even then it is in no way mandatory to keep the guns inside your home, there are several military depots around where the guns are stocked. If you need to move the gun, you need first to request a permit and state the purpose of moving it.
periodical psychological evaluations are also required for gun ownership. Homicides is also low in various other countries that prohibit gun ownership.
The most likely reason why crime is very low in Switzerland is that the population is very well educated, with public and private health-care and the fact that their system is one of the most democratic systems in the world. - snowrail, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2In the USA, very VERY few people are murdered by machineguns.
Better off comparing to a country like Costa Rica, which has analogous gun access... and has similar numbers as a result.
But I agree that the rates are societal as much as gun-access related. - darthvalium, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2buried for homOcidal.
buried for not being to scale.
this "infographic" is, as usual, nothing but misleading. - qazws, on 10/28/2009, -1/+3You forgot thoses middle eastern countries.
- Barackalypse, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2You'd probably be kidnapped for ransom there, not necessarily murdered.
- inactive, on 10/28/2009, -1/+3have you seen the rise of teen suicide in switzerland?
- nissansupragtr, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Dugg for homocidal
- Maudrid, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Can I please leave SA now?
- MrSteamTank, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Colombia is a dangerous place but I lived in Bogota for a year without any issues. Regardless, remember that many countries really are more dangerous but simply don't report the data.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_ ...
Apparantly Senegal is the least dangerous nation in the world. I'm sure...
I actually have to give Colombia and El Salvador props for not hiding their murder numbers like many other nations do. - prisoner24601, on 10/28/2009, -2/+4OK guys I'm not saying that Switzerland is perfect, but do you honestly not see some social differences that are pretty telling here? Do you really think that the policy of: "if you are of military age you MUST keep an ASSAULT RIFLE at home but you'd better keep it under lock and key and never touch it except in case of war" would work in the US or most other countries? (And I am indeed aware that guns are not allowed to be carried there. I never suggested otherwise.)
Again, I'm not trying to say that there are not social problems in Switzerland, but it is a FACT that their homicide rate is impressively low at the same time that it is a FACT that a huge percentage of their population quite literally has a MACHINE GUN in their basement.
Yes, people "snap" in Switzerland too (and there have even been some high-profile cases of guys doing exactly what you'd worry about: breaking the seal on their assault rifle and using it to kill someone.) But the overall fact still remains that there is something impressive that a huge percentage of their population has IMMEDIATE access to an incredible amount of personal firepower and *chooses* to be responsible with it.
I'm not sure why me drawing attention to one positive aspect of their society makes people feel a need to bash it in response. - helloworld2006, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2I'm fairly certain that Somalia would easily top that list.
- duzey, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2'Cause people treat Digg like a giant *****-measuring contest.
- k3rfuffl3, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2He's saying people in the US suck and have ***** ethical character. Considering the number of religious, conservative, and poor people in the US I'm inclined to agree. Fortunately, they're not the majority.

- funk49, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1I think the high murder rate has to be balanced by the fact that Columbianas are friggin' HOT.
- jkleinrichert, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Was the submitter, not the site's error (unless they fixed it).
- Spirods, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1funny how they are still at war and half-occupied, turkish army must suck big time

- Eremos13, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Nice: South Africa -- host of the next World Cup. drunk and rowdy Football fans + potential to be murdered = big fun.
- Fryllock, on 10/28/2009, -2/+3Unless they're talking about killing gay people, homocidal doesn't truly apply.
- swantamer, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1Good to see Boone from LOST finally getting some work as a model.
