- ExGhost, on 07/18/2008, -0/+19WTF??
- panteradactyl, on 07/19/2008, -0/+8Yeah, you lost me at "planning"
- braveryonions, on 07/19/2008, -0/+8Time for kindergarten! Are you ready Stephen?
- ReeferChiefer42, on 07/19/2008, -2/+11English *****, do you speak it?!
- willster580, on 07/19/2008, -2/+1I did that once...please bury me to death, I will enjoy it.
- blademanx, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3Cocaine is a helluva drug.
- skewl, on 07/18/2008, -17/+8High enough to die if you lose your balance!
- dalnet22, on 07/18/2008, -0/+11No, really?
- saketome, on 07/18/2008, -3/+0Ya, really.
- futebollounge, on 07/19/2008, -6/+3i guarantee you i've driven on even scarier roads. their wide and flat alright, but the people in the other cars chowing down on their burgers or talking on their phones while their cars are targeted right at yours. i can probably handle these ***** roads with my 94 altima but i cant handle ***** drivers :(
- MotoFly, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3Do you even know douchey you sound?
- futebollounge, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1you forgot how*. but yes i do.
- disoriented, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3Story of my life...BLAZE THAT *****
- dalnet22, on 07/18/2008, -0/+11No, really?
- tuffguy, on 07/18/2008, -1/+91every time i see the pictures of those crazy people hiking that trail in china i get dizzy and cringe a little. i'm normally not afraid of heights, but damn, if you fell you'd die of old age before you hit the ground.
- Slade605, on 07/18/2008, -2/+10You're not such a tuffguy now are you!
- temporaryescape, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3On some of those pics I felt my balls go into my stomach... that Chinese chain trail is ridiculous!
- Schmich, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Yeh the Italy-Switzerland pass is nothing compared to that.
- svnft, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1old age? don't you mean dehydration or starvation :)
- AttackOfZack, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't touch that 3-foot-wide trail of 2x4's held together by giant staples... all it takes is one giant staple remover and your finished.
- GliTCH82, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2Not true, there is an "oh *****" chain right above the stapled 2x4's, effectively doubling your chances at survival. Think of it as trusting your entire life to RAID-1.
- bezdomnoi, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Don't you people take any risks? Where does the fun come from without the prospect of possible death?
- Pneub, on 07/18/2008, -3/+22I love hiking and backpacking, and scary trails and walking along logs to cross streams is always fun. But if came up on that trail in China...***** that. I think I'll just avoid walking on a foot wide plank attached 90 degrees to a rock wall that will drop me to my death. As much as I'd like to smoke a bowl at the top...nah, ***** that.
- ShadowFoxxx, on 07/18/2008, -1/+14Being a acrophobic, I can see myself fainting from sheer terror at "1. Bolivia's 'Road of Death'". Along with several others. Anything where I can't see the bottom, or there's a cliff, I will never go. I don't mind the falling aspect, it's the sudden stop that scares me.
I'll walk, thanks.- gmprunner, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1I don't get it, why don't they just put some guard rails on these roads, even if only placed at certain, particularly dangerous or accident-prone areas? How hard is it?
You'd think that after death #4,698 they'd start to get the hint... - ShadowFoxxx, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1I don't think a guard rail is really going to make a difference between a 1 ton vehicle wheeling for the edge with a 90 degree drop.
- gmprunner, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1I don't get it, why don't they just put some guard rails on these roads, even if only placed at certain, particularly dangerous or accident-prone areas? How hard is it?
- YouGotDugg, on 07/18/2008, -13/+10Doing 55 MPH on Lombard Street in San Francisco definitely should have made that list.
- ronaldinho, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Which no one sane enough would do. Besides, you don't HAVE to drive through that road to get somewhere, unlike the roads in this article.
- Rizoh, on 07/18/2008, -1/+15Holy *****! I was scared outta my mind just sitting here looking at those pictures.
- rwallen, on 07/18/2008, -0/+7The Guoliang Tunnel just looks awesome.
- benman587, on 07/18/2008, -0/+55Why does the Russian in the yellow shirt have no pants?
- angrynorwegian, on 07/18/2008, -1/+54Pants wear you.
- heliox, on 07/18/2008, -1/+39One word...Vodka
- mecharabbit, on 07/18/2008, -3/+3Maybe he tried putting them under one of the tires to get traction? It'd be worth a try, I guess.
- MaxIsBored, on 07/18/2008, -4/+6Becuase of the mud....
- grizzlybrice, on 07/18/2008, -0/+10Because of the economy...
- mark076h, on 07/18/2008, -2/+11this has been on digg like 10 times before but dugg again because it's cool
- matador0, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1So its my way or the highway then
- IphtashuFitz, on 07/18/2008, -0/+10Saw a tv show on the "Road of Death" in Boliva a few months ago. I wouldn't go anywhere NEAR that thing. Downright scary.
- blackinthmiddle, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3The Road of Death is a road in name only!
- intunecos, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1In Ecuador, we have roads similar to those. However, at least we have the compassion of putting railings next to the roads. Oh and by the way to be on those roads is rather fun (if you make it).
- rationalbeats, on 07/18/2008, -1/+6That websites need more ads.
However they do not have the "Going to the Sun" road in Glacier National Park. That one is pretty scary- nesman89, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0Ad Block Plus with Firefox is your friend. I didn't even know it had Ads.
- Shoebox639, on 07/18/2008, -1/+8wow I'm not sure you can call a muddy path a "road". these roads are crazy!
- NathanCH, on 07/18/2008, -3/+5I'm pretty sure the last one on the first page isn't a road.
- spazzx625, on 07/18/2008, -1/+26That was way better and WAY more comprehensive than I thought it would be
- audaciousgenre, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2also way more frightening
- lenninct, on 07/18/2008, -2/+4dugg for the second time this year!!!!!
- Rapter09, on 07/18/2008, -3/+4Think that's dangerous? Come to the province I live in; the pot-holes are large enough to subsist on a steady diet of small compact cars and passing children.
- KnutTheBear, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1Nom nom nom
- ShooterMcGavin, on 07/18/2008, -1/+9Some of those pictures turn my stomach. I'm not afraid of heights, per se. Love to fly, tall buildings are fine. But, I am afraid of unsecured heights. And those roads are the very definition of unsecured heights.
Whoa. - commiecat, on 07/18/2008, -0/+37"This is a heavy-tourist traffic area in Xian"
I don't think those planks would support heavy tourists.- ExRe, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2You go back, you too fat. You break board and fall long, long way.
- AmonAmarth, on 07/18/2008, -0/+10Pretty freaking awesome article. Dugg!
- tramblings, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2I know this always hits the front page, but I excuse it because it's always cool. :) I want to ride my bike down the mountain roads. That would be a major thrill.
- blackinthmiddle, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1So the imminent possibility of dying is a thrill?
- matt2m, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1No ***** some people rather take risks and have an exciting life than always worrying that they are going to die.
- tramblings, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Yes, the imminent possibility of dying is a thrill. :) Plus, those roads are narrow from a car standpoint but wide from a bike. I wouldn't be worried about dying.
- blackinthmiddle, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1So the imminent possibility of dying is a thrill?
- ZeeZee2k, on 07/18/2008, -4/+2zoom zoom zoom
- OpenLaszlo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1zoom zoom splat?
- kailash079, on 07/18/2008, -9/+1yep...i've been through most of those roads.....
now i never travel... - thedogfatherx, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2Man my hands were getting sweaty looking at those last ones. Phew! I don't think I could ever do that.
- DrSnugglebunny, on 07/18/2008, -2/+6holy 20d6 falling damage!
- mjd420nova, on 07/18/2008, -1/+0I find the turn off from the paved road in Dinosour National Park to Echo Park Campground the most treacherous in the US. Dropping three thousand feet on less than one mile travel on a scrabble road a very scary drive or should I say slide.
- JamesMatt, on 07/18/2008, -1/+7should be on the list..........
http://nynerd.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/mtb-c ... - OpenLaszlo, on 07/18/2008, -7/+1I always found the information superhighway to be quite dangerous....
- ancalagon73, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Damn, and I thought the Belt Pkwy was bad.
- perogi21, on 07/18/2008, -8/+1Umm, my father sent me these pics in an email about 2 years ago.
- huff51, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2youve had 2 years to think and this is the best comment you could come up with?
- perogi21, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I had a better comment but I forgot it in the last 730 days.
- huff51, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2youve had 2 years to think and this is the best comment you could come up with?
- deaftly, on 07/18/2008, -4/+1No pics of the NJ turnpike?!?
- RudeTurnip, on 07/18/2008, -2/+1The NJ Turnpike is very well maintained. I was expecting to see Highway 17 or the PA Turnpike on the list though.
- ronaldinho, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Nope, US roads are rather safe compared to that Bolivian highway of death. Find me a road like that in the US. The only road that I can think of is the coastal road route 1 in Cali along the Pacific coast, but compared to the Bolivian one it seems like a joyride
- RudeTurnip, on 07/18/2008, -2/+1The NJ Turnpike is very well maintained. I was expecting to see Highway 17 or the PA Turnpike on the list though.
- DiggGeek24, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I have been on the Bolivia's "Death Road" when I was a volunteer doing construction we helped build a few houses and a hospital we has 500lbs on a POS 78' toyota truck.
- Hippldc, on 07/18/2008, -0/+44I was on the Yungas Road in Bolivia in 1996. Back then it was just the way you got to Coroica, a beautiful village in a cloud forest. On the way, our bus driver stopped suddenly. He saw fresh tire tracks leading off the ledge. We all got out of the bus and walked down the rocks. There were clothes, blood, a doll, tools, etc all the way down. The bodies and survivors had been moved by the time we got there. On the walk back up to the bus, a man picked up a wrench and pocketed it. The Bolivians didn't like that and hissed and shamed him. It belongs to the dead, is what I took from that. He set it down and we all walked back to the bus quietly.
An hour later, on a different bus, our driver crashed into the side of the mountain near a switchback. I thought he was drunk or asleep. It turns out his brake line broke and he was saving our lives by steering towards the inside wall. A small tree crashed through the glass windshield. And I mean plate glass, not auto glass. The first few seats of people were bloodied by the glass. The lady in front of me held her baby out the window, ready to drop it on the ground instead of rolling down the cliff or bursting into flames. When neither happened, she calmly pulled her baby back in and we all got off. She's seen this before. The driver pointed out the brake line and we walked to the next village for another bus. True story, man. They're not kidding when they call this the most dangrerous road in the world. I heard they completed another, safer one 2 years ago, but this is still open.- billiam, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3I had a similar experience in 2002. I had gone to Bolivia to visit my dad. He thought it was a good idea to go on the Yungas road in order to get to a resort from La Paz. He thought it was a good idea and on the way told us a story of a motorcyclist who disappeared on the road. His body was found a year later after a bus tipped over the road and landed near his body. After passing truck after truck and the jeep stalling causing us to almost roll down a hill, I started to realize how wrong my dad was when he said it would be fun.
- bane18, on 07/19/2008, -3/+2dammit, i keep expecting to start suddenly reading the lyrics of the theme song to "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"
- dexedrine, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1omg..... those pieces of wood nailed to the side of the mountain almost made me ***** my pants. If I got hurt, I'd pray to whoever i was with to leave me..... I'd end up getting us all killed....
- budgeysmuggler, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3The skippers canyon road in New Zealand one crazy ride. You lose your insurance cover if take your own vehicle on it.
Funny thing is most people use this road to to get activities like bungey jumping or white water rafting. So it might be said that the journey is scarier than the destination.
As for the mount Hutt access road, that is an absolute nightmare. Ruts slips and ice make one hairy ride down, even with chains, especially if you have just spent the day tearing it up on the slopes and your concentration levels aren't so flash. - pagalchu, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1They call it scenic drive
- graemee, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6LOL - dugg for most dangerous *****. That outhouse on the cliff.
- hellahyphy, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1My heart rate just doubled!
- Ascendancy5, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I don't think I will continue to next page.
- izelpii, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I've been traveled many times using the La Paz - Coroico road. The photos show how that road used to be, and definitely it was really scary. I remember many times that I couldn't see road from the back passenger side while I was a child. There was an area that was wet all-year-round, all the time, every day, since it was very humid, always surrounded with low clouds. One of my friends died there. The main problem with the road was that many people dared to drive there while intoxicated, or where speeding, or fall asleep, or the cars broke their brakes, so you can imagine how that ends. FYI, this road now doesn't work, and it has been replaced with a new one, which is mentioned in the BBC article. The new road is in place now for the last 4 -5 years I think.
- Residents, on 07/18/2008, -2/+4What the hell is this dude doing? Just a shirt? http://static.flickr.com/121/295090600_7d78481e51_ ...
- WallyAnti, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Muddy road = muddy pants = you covering your tighty whities with your lemon colored t-shirt.
- jameshighmore, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Nice joke, stolen from another article's comments section. I'll find it if I can be bothered.
- p341250n, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1I don't see PA 309...
- Paranoidmarvin, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1And I thought Bealach na Ba was bad...
