If you live in the U.S.A. and would like to see similar basalt columns much closer to home, you can visit Mammoth Lakes, California. There is an area called "Devils Postpile" which contains similar volcanic columns. I admit that the area is not as vast as the Giant's Causeway but it still is amazing to look at in person.

- airwalkery2k, on 08/25/2008, -1/+23Finn MacCool is such an awesome name for a legend's protagonist. Don't deny it.

EDIT: about 22 seconds in. - Paranoidmarvin, on 08/25/2008, -0/+14The rock cools in a certain way, allowing it to crystallise, much like hot salt water
- Jon211, on 08/25/2008, -1/+14Northern Ireland is a subset of Ireland, so they are in Ireland.
I think what you meant was Northern Ireland != Republic of Ireland. - Panda200x, on 08/25/2008, -1/+14Geologically Northern Ireland is apart of Ireland.
Politically, it's not apart of the Republic of Ireland (Although residents can choose between an Irish or British passport.). They use English law and GBP. It has a newly devolved governenment.
(I are resident) - SkinnerBox, on 08/25/2008, -2/+14There's order! It must be intelligent design!

- threedaysatsea, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Yeah - it's due to the molecular structure of basalt. You've seen rock candy, right?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal - Peck3277, on 08/25/2008, -1/+7His name actually is spelt Fionn mac Cumhaill. Fionn MacCool is the english way of saying it
- Irlande, on 08/25/2008, -1/+7Vague statement.

man those giants were clever - Irlande, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Ah.
One of THOSE people. - Paranoidmarvin, on 08/25/2008, -1/+7From experience, I'd say the basaltic columns on the Island of Staffa in Scotland are better formed, with a much more definite shape.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staffa
Staffa isn't easy to get to, however - Peck3277, on 08/25/2008, -1/+7Ya I can't remember wither. I wish there was some form of a link to some article that had the story?
But where could one find such a link?? - MadOgre, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6You forgot Hadrian's Wall...
- 00100001, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6That is probably the best single level of any game I've ever played.

- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4It will be raining. Seriously, I knew immediately that Hellboy II hadn't been filmed here because there was sunshine over the North Antrim coast.
- Jammie, on 08/26/2008, -0/+4What about the nine Glens of Antrim?
- plingboot, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4Interesting fact about this place is that 300 years ago scientists, arguing over whether they were man-made or natural, began the modern science of geology.
The fact that it's the birthplace of geology is one of the reasons it's a world heritage site.
- hobbers, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4I was thinking nature had gone digital.
- itsripitsrip, on 08/25/2008, -1/+5reminds me of hexic.

http://econtent.library.ewu.edu/cdm4/browse.php?CI ... - Tontomurphy, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Peck, I think you're mixing up Fionn and Cúchulainn (Setanta) and it was a hound that was killed. If not let me know the story. Cúchulainn was the greatest of all Irish heroes.
