- Barackalypse, on 07/03/2009, -1/+17I'd avoid any country that it is ruled by a military junta, so Myanmar is out.

- JT114881, on 07/03/2009, -0/+11Everyone speak English in the Philippines (although to varying degrees of fluency) and the culture is fairly westernized.
- kineticarl, on 07/03/2009, -0/+10dear God, no!!!
- beloitpiper, on 07/03/2009, -0/+9Sooooo....basically south east Asia and anything south of Mexico?
- Barackalypse, on 07/03/2009, -1/+9"So why not to pack your bags and dreams and move to one of these paradise locations? "
Because I want a job that pays more than $10 a day? - inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+8I'd suggest Costa Rica if you're going to move one of these places. Awesome animals, awesome climate, awesome people, and best of all, it has the greatest food you will ever eat.
- jezsik, on 07/02/2009, -2/+10Don't rule out Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar and parts of China.
- vizerei, on 07/03/2009, -0/+8You should shut up. Forever.
- omnithought, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7I was in Thailand for a month...you absolutely can get by on $500/month. Even if you don't rent an apartment, you can get a bungalow on the beach on Koh Pha Ngan for the equivalent of about $8/night. I lived on about $15/day there including lodging, food, and quite a few beers. That was eating in restaurants every meal as well.
And Chiang Mai is awesome!
Just be careful of tuk tuk drivers, they will try to rip you off, tell you temples are closed when they're not and try to take you to shops for fake jewelry and cheap suits (where they get a cut). So, learn some Thai, and don't get burned, farang! - inactive, on 07/03/2009, -3/+10Philippines isn't a bad idea. It's the most Westernized country on this list. And those Filipina women are smokin' hot! Yesurr!
- timothycrash01, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6Myanmar might be beautiful to look at, but not a place you'd want to live. I think avoiding military / isolationist governments with one of the worst human rights records of the last 50 years might be high on the 'do not want' list. It also has one of the world's worst health care systems - not to mention sporadic civil unrest and violence. I guess you could always join the Karen army and fight like Rambo.
- Presbyterian, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6Well, if you're looking for cheap places to live, just don't go to any Nordic country.
- catestarrr, on 07/02/2009, -2/+8not to mention chic cities like Quito, Ecuador was is very inexpensive and is full of beauty, mountains, culture, and gives you the city life. cool article! hope I can get to belize someday.
- illied, on 07/02/2009, -2/+7Belize is a wonderful place, although living on $500 a month might be a stretch. Belizean currency is pegged to the U.S. dollar so it's helped make sure that things aren't dirt cheap - at least to the level that they are in some of the other countries in the article. That being said, Belize is more than affordable for the average traveler - but it's noticeably more expensive than some of its Central American neighbors.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5^ Depends... how hot are you?
- shrewduser, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5exotic HDR photo's aside, these countries don't cost much to live in because it's quite hard to make that much money there.
for a holiday maybe, but how would we live in these places without massive savings? - MarshalBanana, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5I think the idea is that if you save up some money you can go live there for relatively cheaply for a few months without working. I have a friend who's lived in south east Asia for over a year and has only spent 5 grand (not including air fare to get there of course).
- Goombellaofgoom, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5It's only polite. We expect immigrants to the U.S. to learn English, so why would we move to another country and refuse to learn their language? It would only make our "arrogant American" reputation worse than it is now.
- hankthedwarf, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5Something funny from the Belize Retired Persons Incentive Program website that was linked to in the article:
"Who Can Qualify?
Anyone 45 years and older from the U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Commonwealth countries, Belize and _any other country_." - JT114881, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5Philippines: If you want extremely hot girls to flirt with you all day.
- aceinhibitor, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5I've lived in both. Philippines is a nice place but Thailand wins hands down in pretty much every way.
- DaviDTC, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6Making $10 a day with a living cost of $5 a day would be better than most jobs and places we live at now. You can't look at $10 there as the same as $10 you are accustomed to now.
Makes me curious, anyone know what % of your daily salary you spend per day on average over the period of a month? I bet it is close to around 85%-90% - JT114881, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5I am working remote in the Philippines, so the 1st world pay with Philippines expenses. Although this option is not available to most people it is the best way to go.
- yellowsnowcone, on 07/03/2009, -2/+6This doesn't factor in the cost of whores.
- gigi52, on 07/03/2009, -1/+5If only I still had my retirement investments, maybe i could afford Costa Rica. But losing my job and my investments, I'm screwed living in the good old US of A.
- JT114881, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4Filipina women make some of the best wives as long as you get one that wasn't spoiled.
(Also my wife is Filipina so I am not talking out of my ass) - aceinhibitor, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Thailand has perfectly decent and reasonably priced broadband.
- TheMachine1, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Me want.
- yacinebouatrous, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3i have lived in Vietnam for 5 years and visited Thailand several times, it is diffficult to live in both countries with 500 $ a month for a foreigner, this article is slightly innacurate. Depends on how you live but if you want to keep doing the things you're used to do in your country : movies, go to bars often, go to nice restaurants, etc... you'll need at least 1000 dollars a month. If you can manage to live like the locals, which is kind of boring, then yeah 500 $ is enough i guess.
From my experience i would say for South east asia, this is what you'll need : 500 $ for a nice appartment not far from the city (get a roomate is better), 25-30 $ per day for restaurants/party/coffee/swimming-pool and all sort of fees (really good lifestyle). So basically for 1000 dollars and more you'll live like and American who earns +10000 dollars a month. It is a very good and stressless life. So yeah totally worth it. - FightTest, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Now if only they would find me a cheap place that tops out at about 75 degrees and rains a lot. Really have no desire to spend all day sweating and avoiding malarial mosquitoes.
- clokwise, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3I live in Chiang Mai and I can tell you for sure that you will never find an apartment for $30 a month as stated in the article. Well, I take that back, if you really only want to pay $30 a month here, you will find the worst pest-ridden piece of ***** apartment even the locals wouldn't wanna live there. Would make living in Detroit rather more appealing. Also, that photo is not from Chiang Mai, not even close, it's some village up in the mountains of Thailand, and there's no way you'll find non-Thais living there.
Chiang Mai is a lovely town, it's cheaper than Bangkok and peaceful and not full of rip offs and scammers like Bangkok. You can rent a massive house with huge plot of land, in a quiet and safe neighborhood for $500 a month. Or if you want to live within the central moated area of the city, $500 a month will get you a huge 3 story townhouse big enough for a family of 4 to 6. - strictnein, on 07/03/2009, -3/+6If I'm spending $500 a month, how is a city any cheaper than any other city?
- akneeler, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Rural Scotland?
- cola262, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Looks gorgeous, except for the mosquitos.
- Barackalypse, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Nope, Rambo 4 =)
Actually, I remembered their crackdown on monks a year or so ago. - JT114881, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2In the Philippines, it's not hard to get them free if you are white. I am not saying that to be racist, it's just Filipina girls have a white skin fetish.
- JT114881, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2No, Filipinos tend to be darker than most other Asians in my experience. Anyway, I have never seen a filipino that was whiter than me.
- fabriciom, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3I'm from Spain and I have free health care. What would one do when you get sick at one of these places and cant find adequate health care...
- rsmith32, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Work in a software company for a couple of years until you become an experienced and valuable member of the team, then discuss with your boss the possibility of you working remotely overseas. Of course it depends on a lot of factors - like is it critical that you are working in the same timezone as the rest of your team, etc.
- deathfix, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Toby Flenderson, is that you?
