- inspecality, on 02/07/2008, -1/+74I tutor middle school kids, and one black kid asked me if he needed to go to college to be a rapper.
I said yes. - Lorddias, on 02/07/2008, -0/+60Why couldn't the authors of this article just put everything all on one page?
- Tunguska, on 02/07/2008, -11/+39Top 5 Most Expensive Universities in the World.... In America.
- Boing, on 02/07/2008, -1/+28No Compton Community College?
- sullyz0r, on 02/07/2008, -3/+28Right, because that's what would happen.
Good thing you have a Ph.D. in economics, right? - robwowjo, on 02/07/2008, -6/+27This is why the us needs to follow Europe's lead, it's ridiculous someone can be rejected by a college for money rather than intelligence.
- richardiscool, on 02/07/2008, -12/+29RON PAUL INSTITUTE!
- LangDawg, on 02/07/2008, -1/+16Unfortunately it's just another marketing ploy to sell more advertising. Every time you goto a new page it brings up new ads. It's really annoying, but it works.
- rpi22, on 02/07/2008, -8/+21RPI should be on that list at $45k per year, but its an 'institute' instead of a 'university'... ***** accountants.

- Goache, on 02/07/2008, -1/+13As a lower middle class citizen, I couldn't imagine paying ~40k/year for college. I went to a state school (a SUNY) and I received a great education for a total cost of 15k. ....Now, grad school is paying me... yay!
- inactive, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10Isn't there an apprenticeship for that?
- CC440, on 02/07/2008, -2/+12This list is bogus, as all of those are Private Universities, yet there are at least 30 schools more expensive that $39k a year. State schools can cost up to $30k a year if you're out of state. I call ***** on this lists research, it stunningly incomplete and halfass.
- kweli, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10very good of you to do
- Paroparo, on 02/07/2008, -0/+10I'm not paying anything, although my taxes will be a bit higher.
Yay for Finland. - jmpeagle, on 02/07/2008, -1/+11maybe yours costs include room and board and other fees not included in tuition?
- Nudar, on 02/07/2008, -4/+13And yet many attend private universities. My tuition was about $15,000 per year. Medical school was about $32,000 per year and add $15,000 to that per year for living expenses. Then take into account the interest that will accrue over the 15-30 years you take to pay it off. People attending public universities have no right to complain.
- kinseyincanada, on 02/07/2008, -1/+10wow American schools are stupid expensive, and to think everyone complains in canada about tuition which is for me maybe $5'000 a year.
- darkphenox, on 02/07/2008, -1/+10Dose not seem like they apply it too much.
- tonich03, on 02/07/2008, -1/+10OMG, this is horrible. I can't believe paying so much for an university. I would never miss a class, I couldn't fail an examn because of how expensive it is! Here in Spain State universities are the most prestigious and cost about 1000 euros an year. In comparison, this article blows my mind.
- Daedalus17, on 02/07/2008, -0/+8Have you ever thought about changing school or do you enjoy acting irrationally?
- acs12798, on 02/07/2008, -0/+8It is a University and classified as such. This isn't a cost of attendance list...doesn't include things like room and board. Tuition here is about 10k less than the numbers your throwing out, about 3 thousand less than the schools on that list.
- cspivack, on 02/07/2008, -2/+9Isn't NYU >$50k?
- m0neybags, on 02/07/2008, -4/+11Rensselaer polytechnic institute
- piobeyr, on 02/07/2008, -0/+7Story without the annoying slide show: http://www.forbes.com/2008/01/21/education-univers ...
Financial aid makes a huge difference. Carnegie Mellon tuition is $36,000 plus about $9,300 room and board, but we have such a small endowment that I hardly got any financial aid at all. Yay debt. - RahulG, on 02/07/2008, -2/+8this list is BS a lot of the top tier schools are 40k+ ie. Yale, Harvard, JHU, Princeton, NYU, UCLA and a lot of non top tier schools are also close to 35k, Drexal, Villanova, St. Joes.
- tech42er, on 02/07/2008, -1/+7How the ***** is the average price $4K? I mean, even a crappy state school would run $10K or $15K. Are they including community and technical colleges?
- xienze, on 02/07/2008, -2/+8In all fairness, I have a feeling that the reason public university students (more likely parents) complain about price is that they're not _trying_ to spend an outrageous amount of money on an education. If you go to a private university, you're definitely choosing to throw caution to the wind and put a LOT of money into an education that, chances are, won't land you a (better) job than what you'd get with a public university education. I mean really, $40K per year for a LIBERAL ARTS degree from Kenyon? That just screams "poor return on investment".
- stalefries, on 02/07/2008, -1/+7Rappers gotta know musical theory too.
- Daedalus17, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6We do. I make $24000 a year doing a job that requires nothing beyond a high school education while I get my degree. When I finish (two semesters left) I won't have any debt to speak of. Most of my friends refuse to work while going to school and instead just build up more and more debt. I have gotten started with retirement savings and own some foreign index funds which I intend to use to save for my first house. In all reality if you can't get a college education and decent employment in the U.S. you probably aren't trying. Obviously I'm not attending a "Top 10" University, but I am getting a decent education none the less.
- Petrarch1603, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6also, there are a lot more than 5 universities in this list
- Mardala, on 02/07/2008, -0/+6People in the US have it good and bad. We have great Universities, they are just expensive. We have great medical facilities, but the insurance and pharm companies screw us and make it more difficult for adequate access.
- muniak, on 02/07/2008, -3/+9RTFA there are a couple that aren't in North America.
- Spytap, on 02/07/2008, -2/+8Through dozens of advisers from all walks of life with more combined economic experience than your entire extended family?
- scallon, on 02/07/2008, -1/+6Public universities cost now what private schools did only 8 or 9 years ago. So public school kids can complain all they want. Public school was supposed to be cheap, but thats no longer the case.
- BlueSkyfish, on 02/07/2008, -0/+5Go look up the average tuition in European countries. Then you'll see why this list is mostly America.
- MacEnvy, on 02/07/2008, -2/+7This list is full of bologna. The school I went to (Colgate U) charges more than Bucknell or Sarah Lawrence for tuition and fees, and it's in the same peer group. Why isn't it on the list? There are plenty of other universities that also cost more than those - did they just pull these out of thin air or what?
If I'm going to pay a small mortgage worth of student loans every month, I should at least get a little recognition of my financial ass-raping. - hobbitboy2, on 02/07/2008, -1/+5[make witty comment to cover up that i went to community college]
- stuwanker, on 02/07/2008, -1/+5[gloat about school i went to disguised as a complaint]
- XopherMV, on 02/07/2008, -1/+5State universities ARE public schools. And yes, despite being public schools, US universities ARE the best in the world. 18 of the top 20 universities are located within the US.

- BlueSkyfish, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4He'll have to pay a lot less since everybody pays, but not everybody goes to college.
- Bluestrike2, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Continue reading the sentence...
"Globally, the average cost of a public education in the U.S. ($4,587) was second only to Australia ($5,289) in 2003-2004, the years surveyed for the study. For private education, the U.S. schools have the highest average price tags." - bhavinp, on 02/07/2008, -1/+5And what exactly do u base your hypothesis on?
- thesonofdarwin, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Believe me, my undergrad ran $35k/yr (right beside Bucknell, actually!) and my med is ~40k/yr and people miss(ed) class, often. You can easily pick out the students who are paying for their own education vs. parents.
- Malevolant, on 02/07/2008, -0/+4Is it me does it seem like all Forbes does now is Top 5 and Top 10 lists?
- Pake, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3Very true. Also, a lot of companies these days are offering to help pay employees for college, assuming they take classes useful to the company and sign contracts to work for the company for a few years after obtaining the degree. Not to mention, I know of some grocery stores who offer similar deals where they'll match a portion of your paycheck and put it into your education.
- ipodman, on 02/07/2008, -0/+3http://www.smartcollege.org shows that there's only 68% retention rate of full-time students in the US.
