- shoppingkart, on 12/31/2008, -0/+21Try tracking me via GPS. I stay in one place 24 hours a day.
- Stalks, on 12/31/2008, -0/+18The video is misleading. The trails of the taxi movements are artificially prolonged to make the streets look busier. If they were just dots without their trails it wouldn't look busy at all. And the presumption that the taxi's are "spilling onto the surrounding streets" is assuming that the taxi's aren't picking up and dropping off from the side streets, instead of using them as an alterative route.

Amazing how much room one person can take up when they're in a car by themselves. - sladek, on 12/31/2008, -0/+7Britain FTW
- ohreilly, on 12/31/2008, -1/+8This is quite old, "Britain from Above" was a rather good TV series a few months back. Even better in HD too.
And as for the paranoid comments about tracking, perhaps, maybe, just maybe, the BBC obtained the permission of the cabbies to track their cabs for the purposes of the programme / install tracking equipment? No, that's a SENSIBLE comment so it will be dugg down. Get a tin-foil hat. - jordanlgta, on 12/31/2008, -0/+5What the hell is this Related by Keyword stuff doing messing up digg???
- WiretapStudios, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4They have internet access at your jail?
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4seeing something like this for NY and its taxi traffic clusterfu*k would be awesome.
- JoeSpaceTime, on 12/31/2008, -1/+5How different the world will be when you can watch and see everyone you know on the planet live from satellites.
My satnav recently got stolen, and the replacement one has a "buddy" feature, where you can program in your friends and family to see where they are. Fun! - purseonality, on 12/31/2008, -0/+4London Black Cab drivers aren't just a dude with a car and meter like you'd see in the US. They have to pass a rigorous exam called "the Knowledge" which basically means they know everything about getting everywhere. Dings and scratches on the car are a no-no, as is carrying on a conversation with the passenger. They're expensive, but worth it.
Minicabs aren't as regulated as the Black Cabs are. In fact, you're kind of taking your fate in your own hands unless you get a real Black Cab. - mingohills, on 12/31/2008, -2/+6Funny. Not a single shot of actual traffic is backed up.
- zaferk, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3how much do taxis cost in london. on average lets say, for an x minute ride? ive read that a ride on the subway is 4 pounds, when its not even like 1 pound here in toronto. ***** hella crazy expensive
- mousky, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3That place is either your parent's basement or jail.
- pushpin22, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3very cool.
- Thomaschaaf, on 12/31/2008, -0/+3Wait.. so they are telling us that at daylight the streets are full? I could have told them that without using GPS technology
- minuslars, on 12/31/2008, -1/+3Track me more, Big Brother
- MAGZine, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2American/Canadian Traffic wouldn't be the same... You would see the dots sit in one place for a while... advance a bit... bit more.
This is what happens when the streets are 'over capacity'. - TravelChannel, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2Agreed, great visual in understanding the taxi flow, very interesting.
- mikembley, on 12/31/2008, -1/+3He meant realtime
- linagee, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2They'd have to give a lot of tickets if they tracked all the taxis in the US.
- linagee, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2Recession(read as free) version.
- zaferk, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2what the hell is so special about black cabs? and no conversation with the driver? whats up with that
- borez, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2That whole series of programmes was fascinating to watch.
- cr42yr1ch, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/taxisandminica ...

- borez, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1The underground is not that expensive if you use an Oyster card, otherwise it's ridiculous.
- 13373h4X0r, on 12/31/2008, -1/+2Did they obtain the permission of the passengers to have their routes displayed on television for the whole world to see? NO. They didn't even consider the privacy of the passengers. Making potential passengers aware that their route data would be used in this program would have satisfied privacy concerns, because people could then choose to not ride the cab. If there were a notice given before entering the cab that the data in general would be publicized or available for use by anyone the cab company sells the data to, then, again, people could make an informed decision about whether or not to ride the cabs. But I am guessing that the cab company happily participated in this research without the consent of the passengers. My concern is the lack of reasonable public imagination about how this data might be abused.
You might rightly respond that there is no immediate way to correlate the seemingly anonymous traces on the television screen with individuals, but I think you would be surprised by how few "anonymous" data sets, all seemingly mere statistics on aggregate behavior, would be required to recreate the actions of a specific person.
That video further brainwashes the British public to regard such mass data collection as fascinating and only beneficial. Where is the counterpoint to that message? Where on television can you see people with the "tin-foil hats" (your disparaging characterization), inspiring people to CONSIDER the potential abuses of mass collection of data? - itisme1760, on 12/31/2008, -1/+2Hope they have the Patriot Act in the cabbie.
- adkenc, on 12/31/2008, -1/+2Digg technology reveals how the network of BBC servers is being pushed to the edge of capacity, as users attempt to watch the GPS traces of 380 London taxis over the course of a single day.
- s8672662, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1Pretty good,
- rssurvivor, on 12/31/2008, -1/+2This is pretty cool, from the documentairy series britain from above. They also track school children, trains, telephone calls and lots more from above.
- tloftxj, on 12/31/2008, -1/+1Very insightful.
Too bad the average American is lazy to consider walking. God forbid we bear the natural elements outside. - satyamtech, on 12/31/2008, -0/+0Try NYC Subways... about to go up again.
- BillDauterive, on 12/31/2008, -2/+1It's a good thing that the United States don't have spy satellites watching it's own taxi's. Might be a few less taxicab confessions.
- BlockedUser, on 12/31/2008, -7/+3Its called Google Maps. Just click on the 'Satelite' view option. :/
