So, what exactly would be the reason to visit? - pablo0713, on 11/10/2008, -2/+23What's wrong with selling marijuana?
- spyd3rweb, on 11/10/2008, -3/+23What the hell is the point of going there if you can't buy an AK-47.
- 1smartguy, on 11/10/2008, -1/+17It's a holiday in Cambodia!
- ktroniq, on 11/10/2008, -0/+9Jokes aside, it's refreshing to hear some good news out of Cambodia. As a Cambodian-American, there wasn't much to be proud of in the country. But hopefully, as the country rebuilds itself from the war and genocide it has suffered, it can again reclaim some much needed peace and prosperity.
- Beautyon, on 11/10/2008, -2/+11"It's no longer easy to purchase AK-47 assault weapons here. Vendors have stopped selling marijuana in public markets, and fun-seekers can no longer lob live grenades behind the military compound outside of town."
so they have COMPLETELY RUINED IT then. - dartmanx, on 11/10/2008, -0/+8I dunno. The citizens probably find it to be an improvement over Pol Pot's "Year Zero" policies of everyone being forced to farm, shooting people who wore glasses, etc.
- supguy, on 11/10/2008, -0/+8what's a pederass, Walter?
- Irashtar, on 11/10/2008, -1/+9Duh. you should share it freely!
- diggit83, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7This is almost as depressing as the Australian article, crushing my dreams of riding a Kangaroo...
- ElGanyan, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7Shut the ***** up, Donny.
- fluxion, on 11/10/2008, -0/+6'Today, Phnom Penh still has plenty of rough edges and crime. At certain places, visitors can still order "happy pizza," or pizza with marijuana topping. But in other ways, it's a different city entirely."
gotta love those special herbs
although, with Amsterdam in the picture, you're gonna have to do more than that to impress. - P0peRatz0, on 11/10/2008, -0/+5You can't buy pot in the public markets anymore, either? So why would I want to go there again?
- MWeather, on 11/10/2008, -1/+6Angkor Wat is beautiful, but the signs everywhere warning of landmines really takes away from it's appeal.
- vilago, on 11/10/2008, -3/+7cambodia is home to one of the 7 wonders of the world, Angkor Wat
- ASSASSYN360, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3And old dusty Ak-47 with one clip for $100....that's a steal. Ak's are durable.
- asgardshill, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3"fun-seekers can no longer lob live grenades behind the military compound outside of town"
If we are not free to toss around high explosives for the hell of it in an urban setting, are any of us truly free? - Amorn, on 11/10/2008, -1/+4damn, i read 'Transformer Phnom Penh', thought it was transformer 2 filming news
- Godlike, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3Damn could you really do that? I now have a dream, a new goal, a purpose....
- vilago, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3and lobster dinners for $1
- brstilson, on 11/10/2008, -1/+4"At certain places, visitors can still order "happy pizza," or pizza with marijuana topping. "
Holy *****. It gets you high AND takes care of the munchies at the same time! These Cambodians are geniuses!
Hopefully they don't make Marijuana illegal there. - vilago, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3"Cambodia's Angkor Wat is the 5th man-made wonder of the world"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angkor_Wat - mille716, on 11/10/2008, -0/+3I got mine for $6 in July. 12 foot ceilings, cable TV, AC and hot water all included.
People shouldn't go to Phnom Penh to stay in damn $50 rooms. - brstilson, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2if it's $50 a night for a luxury sweet, that'd be one thing. But $50 is pretty typical for your average run-of-the-mill hotel room.
- brstilson, on 11/10/2008, -3/+5Angkor Wat is neat, but it is not one of the seven wonders.
- sindex, on 11/10/2008, -2/+4I read this as "Tamed, Transformed Phenom Penh."
I thought AMD sold to Intel and they were making a Phenom/Pentium processor. I clearly spend waaaay too much time in front of a computer to put all that together in my head.
On the other hand, it's always good when horrible places start to clean up... - dartmanx, on 11/10/2008, -1/+3You might want to go outside and experience the sun, rather than just looking it up on wikipedia.
- mhmandthen, on 11/10/2008, -1/+3Exactly. If anything, they should increase the number of marijuana vendors to incapacitate any would-be criminals, if they're worried about crime.
- sanman, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2Uhh, the Khmer Rouge most certainly did come to power due to the US.
Zbigniew Brzezinski collaborated with China in supporting the Khmer Rouge communist guerrillas to counter Soviet-backed Vietnam.
Over a million Cambodians died.
Brzezinski should be hanged. - Frixionburne, on 11/10/2008, -2/+4"Vendors have stopped selling marijuana in public markets...."
Why in the hell would this be a good thing? Great idea guys, lets take the only thing that is keeping people from shooting each other away....... unless by "public markets" they mean that now your pot is sold to you in an LV handbag. - Oztog, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2***** riding them, make them into steaks
- vofuse, on 11/10/2008, -1/+3"It's no longer easy to purchase AK-47 assault weapons here. Vendors have stopped selling marijuana in public markets, and fun-seekers can no longer lob live grenades behind the military compound outside of town."
So why would I want to visit now?
^^^For anyone who hasn't already seen this joke the previous four times. - mille716, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2You can't lob grenades but can still fire automatic weapons for pretty cheap so it's not all bad.
(sorry, went through there in July) - mille716, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2I was in SE Asia for six weeks backpacking around and stopped in Phnom Penh for about five days. Honestly, I'd recommend a lot of other cities throughout the region over it. There are plenty of cities over there that accept a wide level of craziness. Phnom Penh was interesting (and insanely depressing) from the Khmer Rouge sites, free Muay Thai fights, and packed parks but the city just left me with an overall impression of filth. It's really, really dirty and smelly. The article forgot to mention that.
- Godlike, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1What if you could do both?
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1Catagories, they're there for a reason.
- ncc74656m, on 11/10/2008, -1/+2Hooray for the end of anarchy.
Seriously, is it that bad when people need to praise this kind of change? - CosmoKramer, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1*****
- jezsik, on 11/10/2008, -2/+3For those looking for weapons and drugs, may I suggest Afghanistan?
- mllawso, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1It'll make you go mad and commit rape and murder.
At least that's what I learned in DARE. - SuperMoses, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1@sanman: As should Kissinger.
- inactive, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1*****, It's in English for a reason.
And that reason is because of spell check not being enabled and relying on it too much. - mhmandthen, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1That's sad.
- kyravon, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Was there 2 years ago, it's a really interesting city.
Sadly there does still seem to be a lot of sex tourism going on and child prostitution.
Was hoping the article was going to say that was gone too... - SuperMoses, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Right... so 9/11 attacks that killed 3000+ people created a reaction strong enough from Americans to elect Bush and support two wars of aggression... but a bombing campaign against Cambodia that dropped 2,756,941 tons of bombs (more than all of WW II combined, including bombs dropped on Japan) and killed 200,000 - 600,000 or more, did not create a reaction. I'm sure Cambodians were looking for a moderate leader after going through the largest bombing campaign in history.
It would serve you well to read about Ben Kiernan, historian, Yale professor, and writer on Cambodian genocide.
Here's a start: http://www.yale.edu/cgp/Walrus_CambodiaBombing_OCT ...
"Civilian casualties in Cambodia drove an enraged populace into the arms of an insurgency that had enjoyed relatively little support until the bombing began, setting in motion the expansion of the Vietnam War deeper into Cambodia, a coup d’état in 1970, the rapid rise of the Khmer Rouge, and ultimately the Cambodian genocide."
I suggest you actually look into the facts next time, rather than falsely accuse someone of lying simply because you don't like what they say. You only do yourself a disservice by closing your eyes to reality. - manstein01, on 11/10/2008, -1/+1Uh, Cambodia was not doing well before the US bombing, and the Khmer Rouge did not come to power due to the US bombing.
And to say the Communist genocide was a reaction to US actions is utterly ridiculous, not to mention a lie. - Tyrghast, on 11/10/2008, -1/+1Nothing, expect it's illegal in America. After that everyone followed suite.
- JohnGalt76, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0I was there in June and you can still shoot an RPG at a cow for $500. Of course you could probably haggle them down to $200 if you're good.
- jack12345678910, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0i love how this article conveniently rewrote history. so cambodia fell into chaos after the vietnamese came in and removed the khmer rouge? The khmer rouge killed all educated men and women in the country and forced everyone into farms. vietnam did them a ***** favor.
