- Digg32539, on 04/03/2009, -2/+102If we could somehow channel it into the flux capacitor...
- keatonkeaton998, on 04/03/2009, -1/+91DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS
- taketaketake, on 04/03/2009, -2/+74For those interested in how people catch these lightning snaps, the camera's shutter stays open for quite a long time (20 sec in this shot), so that any flashes in that period get caught for the photo.
- Tragesty, on 04/03/2009, -6/+65A great shot, and one that isn't easy to get either.

Yes we do, one strike has enough energy to keep a 100-watt bulb lit for THREE MONTHS! - taketaketake, on 04/03/2009, -1/+44YEAH HOW CAN THEY LET THIS MONSTER TOWER EMIT LIGHTNING?!
- UselessTrivia, on 04/03/2009, -3/+44But it's 1.21 jiggawatts of electricity!
- magare, on 04/03/2009, -1/+37dugg for the streamers rising from the bottom left
- RichMUrrills, on 04/03/2009, -1/+37Could the energy be harnessed and used to cook bacon?
- Efflux, on 04/03/2009, -3/+34The tower isnt getting struck by lightning. The tower is shooting lightning at the sky. And the lesser tower down the block.
- dissolutionman, on 04/03/2009, -1/+29An effective way to harness the power of 1.21 gigawatts.
- DarkSpartan, on 04/03/2009, -2/+29Reminds me of the Citadel from Half-Life 2.
- dissolutionman, on 04/03/2009, -1/+26You accidentally the whole comment.

Alternate angle my friend got. - magare, on 04/03/2009, -0/+12what is a "natural achievement"?
- Angus5, on 04/03/2009, -1/+12Is the Burj Dubai finished? I thought it was still under construction
- RealJimShady, on 04/03/2009, -0/+11Dude, I'm not going to check the official website, however... I just got back from Dubai on Monday, we had an electrical storm about 1 week ago, which I suspect is when this photo was taken. Truely awesome storms around Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Anyway the glass IS in the building up to the level shown in the photo, pretty much the last 10 percent remains. Both crains in the photo are in my photo's on the same levels, and the "pointy part" (I can't say for sure if it's an grounded lightning rod) IS on the building. Sooo... better check your sources.
- Dinkerson, on 04/03/2009, -10/+20You're getting dugg down because your a douche.
- sharkd, on 04/03/2009, -1/+11I would imagine that getting the Burj Dubai to 88 mph would pose at least one or two engineering dilemmas.
- johnnybluejeans, on 04/03/2009, -1/+10They sure put up the Burj Dubai quick!
How is the "Freedom Tower" coming along after almost 8 years..? - RagnabroK, on 04/03/2009, -0/+9Actually they are really easy to get, set up your SLR camera, leave the lens open, wait for a few strikes. You can see more than one single strike in the picture.
- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 04/03/2009, -2/+11@atomicdog1471
Unless you can harness every single strike in an electrical storm, then they wont add up fast enough. I'm afraid lightning power will remain science fiction. So, to rephrase:
No we don't.
Each strike only has enough energy to keep just one 100-watt bulb lit for 3 months.
On average, around the world, there are 30 flashes a second, or 3 million per day. Yes, that energy could power the world if we could harness it all, or even some of it, but you would have to have a lightning rod with a decent potential to attract a strike every square mile or so around populated areas.
It's not feasible to develop the infrastructure or manpower to maintain that kind of a system. - christoast, on 04/03/2009, -15/+24Conblex, the cost of harnessing most of earths lightening strikes is extremely inefficient, especially compared to other green-energy sources. Lightening is not practical and financially unrealistic. Then again I wouldn't expect either of you to actually know something about what you choose to argue about or have any logical reasoning skills.
- Anand999, on 04/03/2009, -0/+8If you check out God's profile on Xbox Live, you'll see the achievement "Struck Burg Dubai with Lightning".
- malechite, on 04/03/2009, -2/+101.21 GIGAWATTS!

DUGG for "buy"! - slashdotordigg, on 04/03/2009, -2/+9I think it is the rod that is casting the lighting to the sky!!
- Skibadoweebop, on 04/03/2009, -1/+8What the hell did you just say?

- wpc33, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7ONE POINT TWENTY-ONE GIGAWATTS!!!
- MrDoug, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7Not finished yet...but still tall enough to be struck by lightening.
- lazycat, on 04/03/2009, -1/+8When I submitted this image yesterday Only three capital letters were allowed. :)
- psychoB0B, on 04/03/2009, -1/+8@ QsheiK & battleroyalex (& all the others, who think the photo is shop'ed): IT'S NOT!
i took the pictures on january 15th during a very heavy thunderstorm, as you can see here:
http://www.gulfnews.com/gngalleries/galleries/1027 ...
i'm just about to upload some actual pictures of the burj dubai i took 2h ago, where you can see clearly that it definately got it's rod and glass cladding, as well as a screen shot of my picture folder, where you can see, that it takes some patience to get shots like these...
and terminatory: what do you think - that i have nothing better to do with my time than shopping the 11 pictures on my stream to perfection??? surely not... - VisualRhetoric, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7The rest of this guy's comments are grammatical gems too.

(Dugg for Bacon) - lazycat, on 04/03/2009, -0/+6You are wrong. The fact is that they build faster than update their official website, and I wish it was the case here in the States. There is a couple of videos of Burj Dubai lightening strikes:
