State Considers Ban on Laser Pointers After Planes Diverted
aol.com.au — An Australian state may ban hand-held laser pointers after six planes arriving in Sydney were forced to alter their flight paths, officials said Sunday. Beams from four green lasers, which appeared to come from an area just southwest of the city, were directed at planes for 15 minutes late Saturday, in what officials labeled a "coordinated attack".

- vladin, on 03/30/2008, -0/+7Same thing is going to happen in the US. There have been several incidences in the LA area recently making news..
- darkchild82, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3Not just one but 6 planes... & they do not know who was behind it.
- nahsrocketeer75, on 03/30/2008, -0/+4Make it a felony. Enforce the hell out of it. End of story.
- StickyStar, on 03/30/2008, -4/+0What? That is just insane! Imagine what the pilots are thinking when they see that red dot, after all this bs "terrorism" going on!
- mwrl, on 03/30/2008, -2/+1Anyone who is caught doing this should be put to death!
- prompel, on 03/30/2008, -0/+3I'm just surprised this hasn't happened before. There is *nothing* that humankind will not do.
- JoeRandom, on 03/30/2008, -1/+6I'm Australian and from this state and everyone involved in this is a dumb ***** retard who needs to be shot. Firstly, the lasers being pointed at the planes are bright, like wickedlasers bright. They were at least class III and are already illegal in NSW. They are talking about banning the import of lasers. The ones used are already illegal to import. The article talks about them being used in presentations. It may not be enforced but laser pointers are illegal in schools and universities in NSW. You can get in big trouble for having one on my campus. Now the dumb ***** christian right wing ***** who run this country are going to ban all laser pointers under the 'won't somebody please think of the children act' if you know what I mean. I don't need or use visible light lasers but I can imagine this extending the ir laser diodes which I need.
- Brocclibob, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3It's stupid how you can't even trust people with a laser pointer anymore.
I'm all for a ban on laser imports, but only if they are high powered ones, like the ones which go like several km.
And to the above comment, i dunno how being Christian and wanting to ban lasers have anything to do with each other.- JoeRandom, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3The Christian comment was anger at our governments new anti violence anti porn filter. We recently just elected the 'Labour' party which is supposed to be our left wing party. So far they have been really pandering to Christian voters. The previous government attempted to create an ISP level, country wide, opt-out instead of opt-in basis, anti porn and anti violence web filtering service (like ***** China style). I voted for the left wing to try to stop ***** like that, but they have been going full steam ahead with that plan simply to try and pick up some conservative Christian support. Its making many of us angry.
Besides 'Christian right wing *****' rolls off the tongue nicely.- theaceoffire, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1"Besides 'Christian right wing *****' rolls off the tongue nicely."

- SteelChicken, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3may not be a bad idea, after having someone try to blind me with one while driving down the freeway, it seems that most people cant be trusted to be responsible with anything.
- protogenxl, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Make the Penalty Sterilization. It is the only way to stop this problem.
- danielknight, on 04/01/2008, -0/+0What's next to make the government feel important, a ban on pencils so no pokes their eye out? Weird.
