- atomatic, on 07/08/2008, -0/+14When in Italy my wife and I thought to ship some extra items home. With the weak dollar though, it was going to cost around $250. Instead, we bought a cheap $30 suit case and used that. I don't love giving the airlines money, but the USPS (or UPS or Fedex) ain't much better.
- JonTheGoose, on 07/09/2008, -0/+14I'd double up on the underwear. You can never have too many emergency undies.
- Ryosen, on 07/09/2008, -0/+12My wife and I did this while in Italy on our honeymoon. Brought 4 days of cloths for a 14 day trip, doing laundry in the hotel or nearby laundromat. Did the entire trip with one carry-on each, which allowed us to be very mobile. Best decision we could have made. It made the trip incredibly easy.
- ThaDRD, on 07/09/2008, -0/+9I thought about this after flying for the first time on a day trip with no luggage. It's just so awesome to be able to go right up to the gate without standing in line to check luggage and then getting off the plane and into a car without waiting and fighting for your luggage on the carousel.
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+9Shipping my bags ,...... still not happening ...
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -0/+8I know what's cheaper than the new airline fees:
pack only 2 items per article of clothing: i.e. socks, underwear, undershirt, etc. Using the hotel's laundry service probably beats the new airline fees AND definitely any overnight parcel carrier. You can take everything carry-on and not worry about anybody mishandling your luggage. - vyralinfection, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6I actually work in the bag room, at an airport, if you saw what i saw you wouldnt think twice about shipping your luggage instead.
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -1/+7Ship your bags to your hotel room. It is less likely to be lost than to lose your socks in a washing machine.
- payload74, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5At least when you take it home with you, you'll get same day delivery. Can't beat that!
- LSDRunner, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5As soon as I saw the source I knew the article would simply summarize the obvious. Good ol' MS NBC
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Oh yeah, I can just see what would happen if I wanted to take along my .50BMG for a trip out west. No thanks. Box it and ship it to your destination. Let those low level morons in TSA get their paws on your ***** and you'll be damn lucky to see it again.
Thank God for UPS/FedEx/DHL. When those are gone.......we're *****. - wtfpwned98, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4The more interesting question is whether or not it might make sense, economically, to ship yourself. Think about it.
- strictnein, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Was thinking about doing this when we go to Hawaii. With all the crap we'll need for our kid, we've been debating shipping some of it there or buying some of it once we get there and donating it before we leave.
- crazyjake, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4i just got back from Egypt, and they wrecked the crap out of my bag! on top of how dirty it got, they even managed to break off a large area of plastic, and kill the button that unlocks the extendable handle.
- bdbr, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3This article fails to mention that the vast majority of mishandling is delayed luggage. Only a fraction of a percent doesn't make it to the destination within 2 days. If you do check bags, you should at least have some carry-on clothes and alternate plans to account for those two days.
Also, shipping overseas is extremely expensive, so this is only an option domestically. Also, if customs wants to question you about a checked bag, you're right there. If they want to question you about a shipped bag, you may a big problem. - inactive, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4A great idea, actually... Shipping your bagages can cost what, 100$? If there is no fee for borders... I admit it's a good idea!
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3I ship some things when I move home.
I've been travelling excessively compared to most people so I've learned some lessons. - adidos, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Dude, you can't use a spam link as a signature...your comments will get buried every time.
- bdbr, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3It didn't appear to be any cheaper, mostly more about convenience.
- NSResponder, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3I've heard that shipping luggage separately is commonplace in Japan, and that the bags will almost always reach your hotel before you do. Don't remember what the charges are like, but I recall that it seemed pretty cheap.
-jcr - davidrools, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2with only 2 items of clothing, you'll be doing laundry everyday, thereby taking away quite a bit of time you should spend vacationing. Ryosen's plan is pretty cool.
- bipolarruledout, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3Yes, lets spend even MORE money on a service that should be included. We could extend this idea to other sectors like grocery shopping. After you get checked out then you can drop your items off to the shipping department before leaving.
Or this could be a boon to airport security. Becuase you don't need to take anything with you then why wear cloths? Just load everyone nude onto the planes. Now thats out of box thinking!
Kidding aside I can see the advantage of this but I would be tempted to pack up some cinderblock as a special "gift" to the airlines. They are just going to lose it anyway. I can see the headlines now... "the cinderblock terrorist"... - bdbr, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2This really only makes sense for domestic flights...and even then its only becomes economical if your bags are overweight.
- hellahyphy, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2ATL always loses my bags.
- blankoboy, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Simple. I just don't fly anymore. Who needs the hassle these days.
- bdbr, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2My family did a 4-week Europe trip with carry-on bags only. Its the only way to go. Be careful with carriers in other countries, though - they have more strict carry-on limits.
- homesickalien, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Easy solution -> Don't let your girlfriend/wife pack her own bags.
- PopcornDave, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Exactly.
And for all the people that are going to jump in and point out business travelers, with the cost of travel going nuts with all the added expenses, why isn't teleconferencing being used more often? Is the face to face meeting really still that important? - colin8651, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2The hotel will do it for you.
- PopcornDave, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Okay, I'll grant you that. But what I'm asking is what percentage of business trips taken today could be handled by teleconferencing thereby cutting out the cost of the plane, hotel, meals and other expenses.
- AlienMushroom, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Works for domestic only.
- duggdowncatisad, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2On the way back home, the airlines make you go to baggage claim, wait for your bag, hope someone doesn't steal it, and when it does come you get to schlep it all the way back home. If you ship the bags, you get off the plane and leave the airport immediately, and the shipping service delivers the bags to your door. Shipping ftw.
- shauncorleone, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Despite the insane airplane fuel prices, airlines really should have just increased ticket prices. This attempt of the nickel-and-dime ***** only further annoys passengers. People are less likely to get mad when they see ticket costs went up $40 than to have to pay to check a single bag.
- qwertydvorak, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3leaky anus ? explosive diarrhea ? you could probably have that fixed.
- TravelChannel, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1good to know...check things out ahead of traveling!!
- haydesigner, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1And eventually blocked.
- saltmiser, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1whenever me or my parents fly, we always ship everything to where we're going, except for the carry on funzies
- PopcornDave, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1That usually means you can leave the pack mules at home then too.
- viacombusta, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Solution: Burn your money so the airlines can't get it. The terrorists have truly won.
- tradderjohn, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1can i have a luggage claim check please !
luggagecheck.com
United States New Zealand round trip shipping 2 large bags total: $2061 (USD)
Round trip ticket 2500 w/tax - Superrob750, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I have been shipping my luggage for the last few years. It is 10x easier than dealing w/ the baggage hassle.
I just send it out ground a week and half before i leave. I havent had a problem yet. - EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1"I know what's cheaper than the new airline fees:I know what's cheaper than the new airline fees:"
Or just fly Southwest. They'll still let you check two bags without a charge. - wtfpwned98, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Ok, now where's the response from someone who works at FedEx/UPS?
- EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I hate being nickel-and-dimed. On the other hand I only travel with carry on luggage and thus it costs the airline less for me to fly--why should I have to pay as much as the person who checks another 100 lbs. in luggage?
Both ways have their merits. - dianebl, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I pack less than most men I know. I've taken a backback for a week long trip.
- Juncti, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Don't you ship your bags every time? Under the f'ing plane!
- EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Airlines are really getting squeezed by fuel prices (you think filling up your SUV is bad) so something has got to give. Bags add extra weight which requires more fuel and also require additional handling, so it's not really unreasonable that they would charge for bags.
That being said Southwest still allows two bags to be checked. Personally I prefer to just make do with a carry on, though. It's much more convenient. - EtherGnat, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Why do you have to be broke to consider saving money? One way rich people get that way is by saving money where they can.
- homesickalien, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Liar. :P
