- Grazfather, on 05/21/2009, -1/+50That Juan guy... he is 31, got out more than 2 years ago (29) after an 8 year sentence (21). A 21 year old showing himself to a teenager. for all we know he was streaking, and she was 17. Seems nuts for an 8 year sentence.
- ShoujoKakumei, on 05/21/2009, -2/+46Great idea. Let's give people who've done their prison time a really good reason to feel like they've got nothing to lose by repeating their criminal behavior! I'm sure that will solve some problems.
- ChronicColonic, on 05/20/2009, -2/+45...at least they weren't force to live in a van down by the river.
- chadsmith729, on 05/20/2009, -2/+42I bet when they have to announce to their neighbors that they are a registered sex offender according to Megan's law it's like a Welcoming party.
- Diefree, on 05/20/2009, -6/+45How does this help the situation? By making them live like animals we are only making relapse more likely.
- chadsexingtime, on 05/21/2009, -2/+39"As Martin says, the people who live under the bridge aren't saints. "
Then why don't you just kill them? Whats stopping you from exterminating them like an animal? Oh, they're human beings, right. But its OK to treat them like vermin, just not exterminate them like vermin. I get it. - blofeld9999, on 05/21/2009, -1/+32Pedobear, you live in Miami? That would explain why 53% of latin girls are pregnant by age 19.
- Chompy, on 05/21/2009, -1/+31I don't have a problem with this sort of ostracization, assuming we're talking about the creatures that attack children. What sucks is when some 18yo who had sex with his 17yo girlfriend ends up on the same list.
- janinekahn, on 05/20/2009, -2/+31Now the trolls really are under the bridge!
- papashawn, on 05/21/2009, -2/+30they might have gotten a bj from a 16 year old girl at age 18. That's some life-ruining ***** right there!
- unfilterthought, on 05/21/2009, -1/+28How are we suppose to rehabilitate and turn these people into productive members of society if, after they get out of prison, we still treat them like *****?
- Chompy, on 05/21/2009, -1/+28The city is trying to get rid of them, basically. They can't legally force them to move away, so instead you get this sort of thing.
- Solkre, on 05/21/2009, -1/+27He should have died for flashing a teenager?
It says he's 31, and served 8 years for his sentence, lived 3 years under the bridge.
He was 20, and showed his tackle to a teenager, who you'd assume was probably 15-17.
Definitely deserved the death penalty >_> - NiftyG, on 05/21/2009, -2/+27These sex-offender tracking laws don't solve anything. If these people are so dangerous you have to track them and keep them away from children, then just change the laws so they stay in jail. If you let them out of jail, then give them a fair chance to rejoin society.
- Suricou, on 05/21/2009, -0/+25Chompy explains it. The city - like many cities and counties - wants the sex offenders gone. It doesn't matter where. Anywhere else will do. But legally, it can't just pass a law banning sex offenders from living in the area - the courts would throw it out. So instead, it's using a tactic of exclusion zones: To 'protect the children,' ban the sex offenders from living near a school. Or a shopping mall. Or a park. A library. A cinema. A skateing rink. Anywhere that children may gather, until these overlapping zones of exclusion cover the entire city, not a spot is left where there isn't some excuse to kick them out. Noone would dare challenge such a law - as the quoted politician points out, noone ever lost an election by being too strict in punishing sex offenders - even though it's intention is to use a legal technality to drive the sex offenders away.
- homercles337, on 05/21/2009, -3/+27How did we end up with these totally retarded "sex offender" laws in the first place?
- Raesear, on 05/21/2009, -0/+22Or the people who get arrested for having sex with their girlfriend/boyfriend when they're 18 and he/she is 16? Or the people who get drunk and piss on a wall then get charged with indecent exposure and become sex offenders?
I'm not defending those who molest children or rape. I'm just trying to point out that those people and the person who pisses on a wall are put on the same list, and there's something wrong with that. Not every sex offender is a horrible monster, some are victims of idiotic laws. - inactive, on 05/21/2009, -1/+23I believe in a few things.
I believe in protecting victims and, wherever possible, compensating and renumerating them.
I believe in punishment and justice and each individual taking responsibility for their own actions.
But I also believe that someone has to be able to make a really huge, stupid, ***** mistake and *still* be given a chance to make something out of what's left of their lives. Once a punishment is over, that person should have some freedom to start rebuilding and carving a new path for themselves. We forget that a lot of these offenders - while very deserving of harsh punishment - also want to be different and learn new patterns to live by.
So, no. I don't agree with sending sex offenders to the Gulag. - kinerry, on 05/21/2009, -0/+21people often get less for murder, and they still get to find a place to live after
- NiftyG, on 05/21/2009, -0/+21When you do the crime you do the time, but no more.
That's exactly right -- yet these people are still being punished once their time is up. - Suricou, on 05/21/2009, -1/+22The democratic process. It's known as the 'tyranny of the majority' - when a population becomes so unpopular that the majority vote punishes them. Sex offenders are one such group: So publically hated, no law that claims to punish them will ever be voted down.

- jba68, on 05/21/2009, -2/+21no but there are instances where overzealous prosectution along with poor defense attorney's, lead to a person being labeled a sex offender for doing something as inane as pissing in public.
I agree kiddy diddlers should be dealt with accordingly, but the appropriate charge should fit the action. - upick, on 05/21/2009, -2/+21Putting them all in once place is not a good idea. Like minded people tend to plan and organize better
- SmokenJoe, on 05/21/2009, -1/+19This is the same state that made a teen a sex offender for sending a pic of themselvs to their boyfriend.
They have no concept of compassion or justice. If it is so bad but them in jail but dont make then live like rats. - SpinningHead, on 05/21/2009, -1/+19They're not all child molesters and how do you keep punishing someone after they served their time? When a murderer gets out, he doesn't have to tell his neighbors. Why does a guy who flashed someone?
- tonberryqueen, on 05/21/2009, -0/+16@Raesear: And let's not forget all of the kids getting caught up in this "sexting" thing that prosecutors are becoming obsessed with, who are going to become registered sex offenders for taking naked pictures of their own bodies.
- fury420, on 05/21/2009, -1/+16a whole lot less to lose? jail ain't that bad for someone who's starving & living under a bridge
- SpinningHead, on 05/21/2009, -0/+15The constitution is supposed to protect from tyranny by the majority. Granted, I hate most of them too, but the law must reflect justice rather than vengeance.
- Grazfather, on 05/21/2009, -1/+15Yeah the states is messed up for how badly they handle this kind of thing.
Rape (not statutory rape) is terrible, but nailing someone a few years younger than you isn't. In canada 16 is the age of consent, but starting at 14 you can nail anyone up to 5 years older than you.
19 nailing a 14 is pretty creepy, but not worth throwing someone in jail for imo. - motivatedguy, on 05/21/2009, -1/+15The sex offender laws are too broad. Getting caught sleeping with a hooker and raping a child are two totally different things. However, they both elicit the same conviction. Urinate in a public place within eye-shot of a child = Sex Offender.
- 2of8, on 05/21/2009, -2/+15the woman in the story "exposed herself" to a child. so, like, she walked outside of her shower and her towel fell off?
also, can somebody explain how seeing a naked person will scar a child?
stupid, stupid, stupid - mtjohnson, on 05/21/2009, -1/+14People with nothing to lose are more likely to do whatever they want... which in this case would be commit sex offenses.
- Hetman, on 05/21/2009, -0/+13They are harder to track. They are unable to get jobs. Really it does not help the problem. If anything this just gives them excuses to go back to there old ways.
- Samurai77, on 05/21/2009, -2/+15Desperate people do desperate things, what do they have to lose at this point? That makes me worried.
Commit a crime = 3 hots and a cot
Stay crime free = starve in a tent
Is this really the reward system we want? - pingveno, on 05/21/2009, -3/+16You're talking about life in prison without the possibility of parole. That's (1) absurdly expensive and (2) edging on an unconstitutionally long sentence for most of these people. When you do the crime you do the time, but no more.
- Genthree, on 05/21/2009, -0/+12He still got 8 years for showing a part of his body to another human being. He didn't rape them, he didn't even necessarily touch them. 8 years of his life spent in hell for showing someone his body.
- walshgopher, on 05/21/2009, -1/+13might have
- SamSks, on 05/21/2009, -2/+13Well, I guess when kids walk in on their parents when they're bathing or making love, the parents should be charged as molesters for exposing themselves! The kids saw NAKED PEOPLE! Oh NO!
/s
They charge people for exposing themselves to children and make them register as sex offenders.
When I was a teenager, there were a few women in my area that I wanted to be molested by. Yeah, I always had a thing for older women. - blqysmg, on 05/21/2009, -0/+11Actually, "sex offenders" are people who commit crimes against the sexual moral code. The may not have ever done anything to or near a child. Let me break it down for you;
o if you expose your genitals to anyone, ever, and they object - you are a sex offender.
o If you have sex with someone, and then later they have second thoughts about it, you are a sex offender.
o If you behave in a lewd manner, ever, and someone objects, you are a sexual offender.
o If you possess pornography, you might be a sex offender. It all depends on the mood of the state solicitor
o If a child gets to see your pornography, you are a sex offender, even if the child had to break in to do it.
o If a child (anyone under 18) sends you a naked picture, you are in possession of child pornography and are therefore a sex offender.
o If you are a minor, and take a picture of YOURSELF naked or in a suggestive pose, you are a sex offender.
o If a minor lies about his/her age and you get naked in his/her presence, you are a sex offender.
o If a minor lies about his/her age and gets naked in your presence - YOU are the sex offender.
o If you talk to someone you THINK might be a minor and suggest sex, you are a sex offender.
o If anyone sees you urinate, you are a sex offender.
o In some states, any sexual contact besides the missionary position will grant you sex offender status. (Georgia, for instance.)
o In some states, the mere possession of sex toys of any kind makes you a sex offender (Alabama)
o In many states, homosexual contact is still technically illegal. (Georgia, again.)
I have a friend who was fined and had to register in Georgia because his next door neighbor climbed out an upstairs window onto the roof to get a view over the privacy fence to take a picture of someone having perfectly legal sex in the swimming pool. It wasn't even my friend, he was out of town. It was the people he got to house-sit for him. I forget what he was charged with, but it landed him on the sex list.
Someone in my family was arrested and sentenced to 10 years for being in the room when a pair of 15 year old trailer-trash girls decided to show their *****. Someone walked in at the wrong moment.
Everyone I know has done something at one time or another that would land them into a lifetime on the sex offender's list. If it was just the list, that would be bad enough, but it's not. It's the stigma of being classed the same as a rapist or a child killer. Why would taking a leak in the bushes be just as bad as anal-raping a 7 year old girl to death? The two can be side by side on the list, and have to live under the same bridge because it is just as illegal for the guy who couldn't hold his pee any longer to live within a half a mile from anywhere a child might spend time as it is for the guy who rapes children? - Hetman, on 05/21/2009, -1/+12I understand you wanting to punish them. But is this going to help society. I would rather they have some type of housing arranged for them. If for the only reason it will be easier to track them. This does not seem like a proper way of fixing the problem. If anything it seems like it would make it easier for them to molest children again.
- chaps111, on 05/21/2009, -3/+13How is this in any way productive?
- JonTheGoose, on 05/21/2009, -2/+11"Question 1: What color panties are you wearing?"
- PsychoPNut, on 05/21/2009, -1/+10*jumps on a table*
- mattyvan, on 05/21/2009, -3/+12in the article the 31 year old was in prison for 8 years for showing him self to a teenage girl so he was under 23 years old, for all we know the girl was 17, they could have been dating and her parents pressed charges, now he is a sex offender for life, I am sorry but that is not right, pedophiles should be killed but there are a lot of sex offenders that there crimes do not fit the punishment
- SpinningHead, on 05/22/2009, -0/+8"Justice is keeping pedophiles away from children."
And murderers or those who commit assault away from anyone? These are also not all pedophiles. -
