- no2gates, on 01/09/2009, -25/+103Sorry, the President of the US should NOT fly in a jet made by another country. What kind of message does that put out? Our economy is ***** enough.
- onClipEvent, on 01/10/2009, -14/+65shouldn't we be setting the standard to whichever is the better choice (quality, reliability, cost to run..etc.), regardless of politics?
- akchrs, on 01/10/2009, -2/+50If I were president I would take pilot lessons and fly my own F-22 Raptor. But I would give the Secret Service people F-15's just so they know who's in charge.
- ArcticRobot, on 01/10/2009, -6/+48Get the Airbus and call it Air France One, goddamit.
- mjbk24, on 01/10/2009, -2/+34"Get off my plane..."
- Cam_86, on 01/10/2009, -10/+40Marine one(the presidential helicopter) is going to be replaced with the VH-71 Kestrel, which is british/italian.
How about you guys put nationalism aside, and pick the best performing piece of equipment? You did that before with fuel tankers, until a bunch of patriotic fools got wind of it and forced the government to pick a less efficient/suited plane.
This entire thread is the problem with the current state of american industry. - oboshoe, on 01/10/2009, -1/+28Concorde is way way too small inside.
Its a beautiful airplane and quite large on the outside, but the interior is very tiny and cramped. The concorde is basically a flying gas can with a beautiful airfoil and engines.
No room for communications and defense systems and personal, let alone a small office and bedroom for the president. - breadfred, on 01/10/2009, -7/+33Even I agree. And I am not even American.
- MaxxusFlamus, on 01/10/2009, -7/+33Hey let's ignore who makes the best equipment and simply buy based on the fact that one is American?
I dunno...sounds awfully non-capitalist to me. - chrissku, on 01/10/2009, -11/+33No offense to Europeans but the President must fly on a plane made in the USA.
- oboshoe, on 01/10/2009, -0/+22Actually, it had the best safety record of any commericial aircraft.
Well it until one crashed that is. - jackyan, on 01/10/2009, -6/+26Why is there even speculation about the Airbus? You don’t see the French police drive BMWs, and you don’t see the German Polizei in Hyundais. I thought only Great Britain kept selling its own heavy industries’ workforce short, but I guess I was wrong.
- punkcat, on 01/10/2009, -0/+18i'd be interested in seeing you do office work in your raptor.
but most likely your answer to any crisis will be "pew pew pew." - oboshoe, on 01/10/2009, -9/+27Two aircraft are not going to make a measurable impact on the economy, but I totally agree that it would be ludicrous to fly the president around in a foreign aircraft.
- caseyh, on 01/10/2009, -1/+18Only a very few runways/airports would be able to accomadate the Concorde. For one, the runway would have to be especially long. The are numerous other requirements, too. This would mean the President wouldn't be able to land anywhere close to many of his destinations, leaving him/her to finish the trip by Marine 1 or the Presmobile. That would defeat the purpose of convenience/time-savings/safety. The generation of Concorde that we know and love is decommissioned and long gone, anyway. There's no way to maintain them. Even with the budget of the POTUS.
- lexpattison, on 01/10/2009, -9/+26I think that the US President should only use US built cell phones (Currently Canadian/Chinese), US built weapons for all the secret service agents(Currently German .357SIG), US made clothing and shoes (Chinese/European). I mean - THINK of the MESSAGE it's sending!!!!!
Come on. I would hope that they would pick the best equipment for the required need. Seems to me, ignoring quality, aesthetics and features is the attitude currently crippling the US economy. By buying the US option without consideration - the message he sends is "I am going to continue to bury my head in the sand just like the rest of the industry leaders in the US and hope that patriotic loyalty gets the job done." - turpenine, on 01/10/2009, -1/+18It will become property of wright patterson air force museum as it is an air force plane and they handle all the other old air force ones.
- Maddoktor2, on 01/10/2009, -0/+14The Concorde would look way cooler, too.
- BigglesPiP, on 01/10/2009, -1/+15This is a good one. Pitts the American passion for patriotism, against the American lust for the BIG.
- oboshoe, on 01/10/2009, -0/+14Goes to museums.
There is already a half dozen older airforce ones scattered throughout the country.
I went through Kennedy/Johnsons airforce one several years ago and stood in the spot where Johnson was sworn in. - inactive, on 01/10/2009, -1/+13I put my vote in for Earth Force One.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:EarthForce_One_w ... - DaviDTC, on 01/10/2009, -5/+17After 2010 Obama should just use the unused space shuttles.
- oboshoe, on 01/10/2009, -0/+12@bread
Well that would free up 100 square ft. Still need to resolve how where to find the other 2000 sq ft for all the "stuff".
Plus one of the reason it has a bedroom, is that Airforce one is designed for long duration flights of a week or more as a flying Oval office in the event of a serious national emergency. - EtherGnat, on 01/10/2009, -0/+12@zdiggler
Drinking and posting don't mix. Aside from your post being nearly unintelligible, you've completely missed the point. Nobody is suggesting American products are crap or that imported items are always good--they were just saying why not let them compete on a level playing field?
Personally I think there's a strong argument to be made for buying American when practical, but try not to make the rest of us look bad, OK? - julian02392, on 01/10/2009, -0/+10eBay
- BootsElectric, on 01/10/2009, -0/+9He should also strip naked and live off the forest.
- exabytes16, on 01/10/2009, -3/+12I'd vote for a 787 Dreamliner.
- HyperionHK, on 01/10/2009, -0/+9Read the article. The old one was intended to have a 30 year life span. The new one is scheduled to roll out in 2017, just 3 years before that intended 30 year life span ends. My guess is that buffer room there is for making sure kinks are worked out, and possible lateness of delivery.
Sure it works fine NOW, but 10 years from now maybe not so hot, and you probably really don't want the president flying around in a worn out plane. It takes a long time to develop and build a new plane - Danltn, on 01/10/2009, -0/+9What's wrong with 747, its more reliable then anything Air Bus made. [Citation needed.]
- Nothlit, on 01/10/2009, -1/+10Actually, the designation is determined by the service to which the aircraft belongs, not the type of aircraft. If the President were to fly in an Air Force helicopter, it would still be called Air Force One. If he were to fly in a Marine fighter jet, it would be Marine One. If he is on board a civilian aircraft, it is Executive One.
- breadfred, on 01/10/2009, -2/+11You wouldn't need a bedroom at Mach whatever.
- dilbert, on 01/10/2009, -1/+10Although the airplanes are assembled in France, Airbus is European, not French.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EADS - Dumbledorito, on 01/10/2009, -0/+8If the president flying an American plane is so important (as I can see it is to some above), why bother with the so-called "competition," then?
If the Air Force really wants to open it to the bidding process, that's fine, but it makes the U.S. look even worse if they call the fight for America, even if it obviously loses. - erkokite, on 01/10/2009, -0/+8@kashk5
France is European, but European does not mean French. Airbus/EADS are multinational. - inactive, on 01/10/2009, -0/+8How about something a little faster and nimble.
This wouldn't be too bad....757 with the ability to go vertical!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRiCHgQnf9s - MaxxusFlamus, on 01/10/2009, -1/+9kashk5-
you have made the smartest- most obvious- most logical, and most reasonable answer as to why the 747 is superior to the A380. - boogieordie, on 01/10/2009, -0/+8Maybe not BMWs, but the French Police do have Subarus.
- emecks, on 01/10/2009, -1/+9Surely he should use the biggest baddest plane available, no?
- drizzlelicious, on 01/10/2009, -2/+10No 787 dreamliner? That thing is beautiful
- Volatile36, on 01/10/2009, -0/+7Planes get stress fractures in the frame and microscopic damage that can cause the entire plane to break apart and crash. You need to replace the entire thing after every so many miles. Air Force One logs a lot of miles too.
- kevinpaige, on 01/10/2009, -1/+8I am a huge fan of the 747 however the A380 is my new clear favorite. I was lucky enough to fly on a test flight last year on its first flight to the US. The plane is smooth and silent. Check out my takeoff video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9SGXIKNeUc
- kashk5, on 01/10/2009, -0/+7It has to be that big because it's also a mobile command center. It's designed to be able to stay in the air for extended periods of time and still be in direct communication with the rest of the world.
- mmittimm, on 01/10/2009, -1/+8I'd like to agree but the A380 is just a superior aircraft. It's like choosing between a Chevy Malibu and a BMW E90 or something. I don't care how American the Malibu is, I'll take the beamer.
- meed, on 01/10/2009, -0/+7AF1 2.0 ? How about AIr Force One 5.0 since this is going to around the 5th type of aircraft to use the call sign. Or if your talking about air craft called Air Force one, it would be overly technical, the first "Air Force One" with the distinguishing exterior paint job was a Ike ordered (first used by Kennedy) 707, meaning that this would be at the very least AF1 3.0.
- gavdana, on 01/10/2009, -1/+8Yes. The WHORES! The WHORES who charge you exactly NOTHING to get in. The WHORES who Preserve our national treasures. How dare those *****!
GAFL - Featherlake, on 01/10/2009, -6/+13It will probably be a 747, but I would be most disappointed if I was the president, I would much rather have the A380!
- kashk5, on 01/10/2009, -1/+8Problem is that many of the airports that Air Force One would have to land at aren't equipped to handle the A380, so it simple isn't a viable option.
- armakaryk, on 01/10/2009, -0/+6worked for Bill Pullman in independence day.
- ModeSeven, on 01/10/2009, -8/+14I agree, and I'm from the UK. The President is supposed to lead by example so surely the example should be to buy American. It'd be like Bill Gates running Linux machines at the office.
