- Surferess, on 11/10/2008, -1/+78This is my favorite submission for today, epic set of photos.
- krekc, on 11/11/2008, -0/+29All on one page!! I love these pictures Boston.com comes up with.
- alanocu, on 11/10/2008, -1/+29Dennis Miller once said:
“Sure, the lion is king of the jungle, but airdrop him into Antarctica, and he's just a penguin's bitch.” - znewick, on 11/11/2008, -1/+20all on one page! brilliant
- iamghost, on 11/11/2008, -0/+18I want to see either of the Auroras before I die.
- thisoneisunique, on 11/11/2008, -0/+17Is there a word in English for when you see beautiful and breath-taking places, you really want to go there and you almost feel a physical pain that you're stuck in your room in front of the computer?
- talonstriker, on 11/11/2008, -0/+17HOLY *****! All of the Aurora pictures are surreal.
- nighthawk419, on 11/11/2008, -1/+14Amazing photos!
Our world is beautiful. - spoiled1, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12#32
"The polar plateau is comprised of a flat white snowy landscape as far as the eye can see in every direction. This photo depicts what most of Antarctica looks like - the bedrock of the continent is more than 2 miles below this snow surface."
2 miles of ice!
Head fweezes. - mreade, on 11/11/2008, -1/+11They were stunning! Would love to go there one day...
- jamangold, on 11/11/2008, -0/+8If a comment ever deserved to be buried, this is one of them. Your comment also does not make sense. This is the Antarctic. What trees are there to hug?
- chikuten, on 11/11/2008, -0/+8Dugg for not being a slide show.
- Iwantawii, on 11/11/2008, -0/+8Doug for the frozen beard pic.
- bridow, on 11/11/2008, -1/+8I'm not even from Boston, but the Globe always has the best photo documentaries from any paper.
- Crath, on 11/11/2008, -3/+10I like the penguin in #1
- keyforce, on 11/11/2008, -0/+7And under that....Ancient Technology.
- Bmarofsky, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6Awesome pics. Did you know that Antarctica is actually classified as a (cold) desert because it has little to no precipitation?
- Benjigga, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4It's so bright up there you have to wear sunglasses or it'll burn your retna. When I was stationed on a Coast Guard's icebreaker, part of the standard issue was a very nice pair of sunglasses.
These pictures don't give it justice. It's gorgeoue. Other-worldly. - forgeflow, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4The "melting away" comments are distressing. The sun does not shine there for half of the year (no sun, no warming). In winter, the temperature ranges from -40 to -94°F (-40 to -70°C) and in the summer the temperature ranges from -5 to -31°F (-15 to -35°C) In what fantasy scenario does ice melt at those temperatures? Honestly.
- eggraid, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4You could actually come to Canada, like 3-5 hours drive north of Montreal and you can see some. Though I would also like to see them from an ice desert... must be quite a different scene.
- Ansem, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4I like that first US arctic station picture looks like the station from John Carpenter's "The Thing".
- fuzzlog, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4Which is good, that way Antarctica will avoid a financial crisis.
- jamangold, on 11/11/2008, -0/+4I've seen Auroras a few times in Montana. Absolutely stunning. What's the furthest south (or north) anyone has seen either of the Auroras?
- wtfhaxorx, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3Oh my god. #7 is Ace. Every pic is amazing :]
- markosfunk, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3absolutely incredible images, especially # 7: the aurora australis, jupiter, and the man-made station truly make antartica look like another world altogether
- WiretapStudios, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3A boner.
- dixhuit, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3Hoth-tastic.
- eggraid, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3This is my favorite submission ever! God it's bad they'll never need an economist in Antartica.
- don2779, on 11/11/2008, -2/+5Great photos.
#17 looks like it came straight out of a video game. - keyforce, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2Boston.com is always awesome with their photo galleries.
- ch0pin02, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2did you know you don't have to be in Antarctica to see the milky way?
- Supernova36, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2What do you call a man with a spade in his head?
- iamghost, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2Oh, Canada. That'd be nice as well
- sagien, on 11/11/2008, -1/+3I can't think of one, but you pretty much summed up how I feel.
- sweetfeld28, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2Excellent photos, makes me wonder what it would be like to live there year round. And how the hell they built the first buildings on any of those stations.
- aenima987, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2[resisting pun urge]
- WiretapStudios, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2After reading so much today about the economy and bailouts, this is a very refreshing set of photographs to spend time looking at.
- anderaaron, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1when ever i see amazing photos like that a part of me dies, because i realize I'll never take pictures that good :(
- WiretapStudios, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1'Ahh Dennis Miller, you truly ARE the king of references!'
- David Cross - anotherjack, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1I think he means the Aurora Borealis. Which you can also see from Alaska. Also, if you have a child with enough Dust you can make a nice Aurora by splitting his chest with a sacrificial knife. But it's nicer to just take a Princess cruise to someplace cold.
- WiretapStudios, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1And I'm sure there when you grow up, there will be a great view from your cell.
- Prathik89, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1damn.. anyone have any wall paper sized pictures ?
- whatthahump, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1this is an awesome collection of photos from antarctica. i worked at mcmurdo station for 6 months in 2006 during the winter, and 2 of the photos in this set were taken by a friend of mine (#21 and #25). it makes me want to go back even more than i wanted to before!
great post! - csl5049, on 11/11/2008, -1/+2These are absolutely gorgeous. I love the first one... so sad
- scratend0788, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1if only they were wallpaper size
- ziggyonice, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1A couple of those shots show the stations that are set up down there. I was impressed with one of them, the size of that outpost was larger than I expected.
- sagien, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Poor little penguin..
I stared at that picture for a while after reading the caption. - anotherjack, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Antarctic land is sitting under 2 miles of ice. It takes a long while to melt two miles straight down. Greenland is shallower, and melting.
- iamghost, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1well played
- zip000, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Ah, that's not true. The lion would probably kill a crap load of penguins before he froze to death...I suppose depending on his proximity to penguins post-drop.
