Revealed: the world's most photographed landmarks

theage.com.au — An academic analysis of more than 33 million images uploaded to the popular Flickr photo-sharing website reveals the most photographed places on Earth. Studying the geotagged data which users attached to their photos, the researchers wanted to establish what the world's most popular landmarks were as judged by the collective wisdom of Flickr users.

    Buried once more for having a false title. The list is limited. It should be Flickr's most photographed landmarks, not the world's.

I would hardly call Flickr a representative sample of the population that takes pictures. That explains why stupid places like the Manhattan Apple store are so high. Stupid. C'mon Cornell, stop proving the writers for "The Office" right.

    After all, something like Yosemite can't compare to the awesomeness that is the Apple store.

    "Flickr seems to be most popular in North America and Western Europe, so landmarks outside those areas are likely to be under-represented."

    Crandall added that people who used Flickr were also probably more likely to be interested in technology - and hence more interested in the Apple Store - than the average person.

    It's a 40 foot glass cube. I'm sure a few people want to take some pictures of something like that.

    The article says they make the list based on geotagged data on Flickr. How many of you have cameras with GPS? For those that have that, how many of those are iPhones?

    Why is the list so shocking and confusing? Because the list is showing us where people take pictures with their iPhones, or where people who can afford very expensive GPS-enabled cameras take pictures.
