triptouch.com —The Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park,Wyoming, is
the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in
the world.
You guys do realize that entire Yellowstone Valley is a volcano, right? Its a type of volcano called a Caldera, otherwise sometimes called a Super Volcano. Its blown its top several times around 60,000 years apart, and we are due for another one since its been about 65,000 years or so since the last one. That and the floor of the valley according to the US Geological Survey is starting to bulge. A classic sign of an impending eruption.

Well, you're partially right. Yes it is a Super Volcano, however, you got the eruption cycle WAY off. It's a 600,000 year cycle but that's not exact. It has erupted several times in the past at roughly 600,000 years apart but some of the eruptions were much farther apart. In order for this (or any) volcano to erupt it must have approximately 60% eruptable liquid magma in it's chamber. The current estimate from the USGS of the amount in the Yellowstone caldera is around 12%. It's a LONG LONG way from being able to erupt. Your great, great, great, great, great grandchildren might have something to worry about.
The pic is awesome, but nothing compared to seeing it in person. I took a summer break from college a few years back and worked at the Old Faithful Inn. Back counrty hiking, and definately some of the most beautiful scenery, especially the Grand Tetons just south of the park.
I was doing some research for a project recently and read that Yellowstone has more than 10,000 hydrothermal features (including 300 geysers), supposedly about half the number that exist in the entire world.
Yellowstone, as well as the previously mentioned Grand Tetons park are two of the most amazing places in the united states.
Some of the colors of the earth in yellowstone.. you would think they were artificial, especially the water in some of these hot springs. Bluer than then the bluest eyes you've ever seen.
I love that part of the country. Almost more than I love living up in the pacific northwest. We have some amazingly beautiful places in this country.
That picture of Grand Prismatic Spring is taken from the air. The gray strip at the bottom right of the picture is a walkway and a couple of people are visible on it. Unfortunately, Grand Prismatic Spring is not as impressive from the ground view (although it is still impressive).
