- crash331, on 04/15/2009, -0/+46Cool graphic? It seemed to confuse the matter to me. Relevant to the topic I guess, but not the best way to present information.
- Pinkertinkle, on 04/15/2009, -0/+28That graphic is a good example of form over function.
- moothemagiccow, on 04/15/2009, -0/+26Sweet jesus, is that graphic supposed to communicate something? Or fit on a normal-sized screen?
- buckeye45, on 04/15/2009, -0/+25how do we decode this?
- zakatov, on 04/15/2009, -0/+21Shouldn't there be some sort of explanation how to read that?
- harronoob, on 04/15/2009, -0/+19Boston couldn't send their info in on time because they are currently waiting on a disabled train somewhere between Kenmore and Park Street
- sirgolf82, on 04/15/2009, -0/+17Pretty meaningless graphic. Give me the info in a damn table.
- Sploxy, on 04/15/2009, -0/+16This graphic doesn't serve its purpose of displaying information well at all.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+12Thank you, NYC's MTA union, for being so understanding and willing to compromise with the state to ease the pain of this recession for all of us commuters.
....Oh wait, that's just the opposite of what you did, isn't it? In that case thank you for ensuring that the MTA raises my subway fare 25% while eliminating one of my two subway lines and ensuring that my commute will become even more of an agoraphobic ***** than it already is - an impressive feat indeed; you should be very proud of yourselves. I hope you're happy once again promoting your personal agendas at the expense of everyone else in NYC. We all surely appreciate it.
So much for going green. It's getting to where it's almost worth my while to DRIVE into NYC instead of taking public transportation. GJ everyone. - Zack886, on 04/15/2009, -1/+13Where's Boston? It has to be up there in terms of ridership...
- ousthouse, on 04/15/2009, -0/+11Doesn't make a damn bit of sense, but it's pretty.
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -1/+12It would help if Public Transit employees actually used public transit. It doesn't take long to see some routes using large articulated buses with few people and other routes using smaller buses, with tons of people packed in.
In Seattle, we passed a levy that would pay to expand bus routes, but will be forced to make cut backs, kinda ironic. Even more is the passing of sales tax to pay to expand the light rail and the light rail hasn't even been completed. - seldon452, on 04/15/2009, -0/+11I have to admit, I love New York's subway system.
I do not love fare hikes and cuts in service. If they raised fares and fixed problems, that would be just fine. But paying more for less just does not make sense. - ousthouse, on 04/15/2009, -0/+11"Presenting information" is really overrated when it comes to infographics. Bright colors and fonts - that's what it's all about.
- fightingforair, on 04/15/2009, -0/+11If someone uses the public transit once to go to work, they will most likely use it again to go home.
- boldrobe, on 04/15/2009, -0/+10This is easily the least informative graphic I have ever seen. Terrible.
- homercles337, on 04/15/2009, -0/+7I get those service updates for the red and green lines, both suck--all the time.
- Dan6963, on 04/15/2009, -0/+7How the ***** are you supposed to read this thing?
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -0/+6Its ok they will only cut back on areas that serve the poor and recently unemployed who cant afford a car any more, and when local elections come around just make the polling booth too far away to walk to.
- fightingforair, on 04/15/2009, -0/+6A huge problem that the U.S. has with public transit is the stigma that goes with it. You use public transportation = poor.
Which is total *****. It'd be great if people could shed that idea and adopt a Japanese approach to it. Public transit = pride.
Japan is easily the best in the world. I've ridden most of Europe's public trains, including the UK. Also did American, Chicago and New York.
And Japan beats them all hands down (this includes buses as well). Air conditioned (the tube is soo damn hot!). Cleaned frequently. Respectful and quiet. And I mean quiet. It's a social norm to have your cell phone off or on manner mode while on the train. Which is great after a long day at work. - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6I take NJ Transit trains to and from work every day, and that's *precisely* the going sentiment among the other commuters. Their employees - especially in the higher management tiers - should be FORCED to use their own services. That way you would have a fraction of the ***** we put up with on a daily basis.
Case in point: on the way home I have to catch a connecting train which comes into the station about 5 minutes after the first one I take from NYC. On several occasions NJ Transit HELD our train, routed the later, connecting train AROUND us, then had the connecting train leave the station *literally* as our train was pulling up, thus leaving about 50-75 people stranded on the platform for a needless extra 30 minutes. If they had held the other train (which was supposed to arrive later anyway) for an extra 3 minutes, all of us would have made it on without a problem, but we were told in no uncertain terms that holding to a schedule was more important that making sure their customers didn't get stranded. This is coming from a company which routinely gets me to NYC 10-15 minutes later than their schedule advertises..... - kelmaster1, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5No kidding, that stupid infographic is pointless. They just stick in a bunch of useless lines on what could be summarized in a table.
- marm0lade, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5@Chongo
At first I thought you were being sarcastic, but now I realize you were being serious. That makes me sad.
Good magazine has horrible graphics. They try to by stylish and trendy with their unorthodox graphs, but it severely takes away from the readability and usefulness. Good design trumps good style every time. Ask google. - siandt, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5Think commuters.
- awfulgrace, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5I don't know if the 11-million is real or not, but a lot of people that don't live in the city do take the subway every day.
They come into Penn Station, Grand Central, Port Authority, etc then take the train to work from there. - Angel511J, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5Reoccurring digg dilemma: Do I digg because the comments are good even though the article sucks?
**** presently going down in Boston: The MBTA just announced no weekend commuter rail service as well as no service anytime after 7 pm, any day. They're also cutting subway services. 6 Stops on the green line alone.
http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/200 ... - ftc08, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5Secret decoder ring.
- JonnyJ, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4Then once the information carrier got above ground the t driver decided not to open all doors leaving the informer stuck in the overcrowded train.
I wish I lived on the red line... - Jelfish, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4@JohnnJ
The green line is bad, but the red line isn't that great either. Switching problems at Alewife all the time. Lots of traffic jams during rush hour. The blue and orange are the most consistent in my experience, probably because they don't split. - shoelessschippa, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4Every time i go to Minneapolis i ride the light rail there. Being that public transportation is one of my big interests i get all excited each time i do so! Public transportation is an amazing thing!
- failedpimp, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4Cut service, hike rates, are you sure this isn't cable companies?
- thebuggalo, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4We'll be paying $4 a ride by the time that 2nd Ave line is done.
- credential101, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Philly gets no love with an average daily ridership of about 800k??
http://www.septa.com/inside/facts.html - DirtyVicar, on 04/15/2009, -3/+6Sure, sure, cut back on your public transit. You'll be paying out the kazoo having to build new roads to relieve the congestion.
- sneezefart, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3For once, we in Philly are not getting cutbacks and fare increases, so I don't think we made the chart. But I'm sure Philly will be there next year!
- danthek54, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3and you forget that nyc has a metro population of over 20 million people many of whom commute into nyc via light rail systems that connect to subways...that and light rail is also run by the mta so im not totally sure if the 11 million includes light rail or not, but either way ride the train during rush hours and you won't doubt 11 million at all
- kollunz, on 04/15/2009, -1/+4Notice how San Francisco fits in all 3 areas? I live in San Francisco and I really on the public transportation system, called Muni, to go to class every weekday. It takes about 45 minutes for me to ride the bus to CCSF in the morning, and sometimes even longer if buses are crowded and full. The monthly bus pass is rising from 45 dollars to 55, AND they've announced on posters inside the buses that many bus lines are being "altered" or "reduced", including the line that I rely on to get to school. *sigh* getting screwed here pretty hard...
- unitedskates, on 04/15/2009, -1/+4It has certainly served our telecommunications well...
Don't you have a tea party to go to? - PaulClayberg, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3You're all missing the point.
- drybamboo, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3If you work and live in the city, you would be stupid to not take the CTA, regardless of how poor or rich you are. It's faster in most cases, especially during rush hour. And parking fees are outrageous, IF you can even find a space. Chicago's problem is that the CTA didn't anticipate such a rapid increase in ridership and they're just now trying to fix it.
- drybamboo, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Can we please stop submitting infographics that only look nice.
- dsmx, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Some people can't afford it because employers don't pay them enough
- fightingforair, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3The A/C comment was directed to London metro aka The Tube. (hopefully that changed since I was there last!)
I guess my bit against New York metro would be the cleanliness. Damn I couldn't get over the smell of some of the stations!
Another positive I could offer is that there is no open container law in Japan. So getting drunk on the train with buds (within reason of course) is so fun on the way to the bars or after the bars. - inactive, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3they're building a new line tho, the east side one that won't be done till 2015 or something.
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Its smelly, dirty but it gets the job done... most of the time at least...
nothing pisses me off than to watch two or three trains go pass you on the opposite direction while your waiting for yours. - goofproofacorn, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3or the poor could actually pay for the fare? I know its a radical thought to actually buy a full priced train ticket but, some people do that.
- kelmaster1, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3haha, brilliant...
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2Buses, plus trains, 11 million is real.
- dsmx, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2I wouldn't know I use the london underground map and that is insanely easy to understand.
- dsmx, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2don't forget tourists.
