- sourceholder, on 03/16/2009, -4/+129The pirates seem surprisingly nonthreatening and friendly in the photos.
- ChiaGod, on 03/17/2009, -2/+114You wouldn't download a cargo ship...
- K4Lic0, on 03/17/2009, -5/+84FTA: "Somali pirates then freed the Saudi supertanker seized in the world's biggest ship hijacking for a $3 million ransom - but five drowned when their boat capsized as they were making off with their share."
HAHAH!!! Uber Fail. - wo0dy, on 03/17/2009, -12/+90***** THE RIAA!
- dogpigeoncow, on 03/16/2009, -15/+88Am I the only one who was hoping to see one-eyed pirates with wooden legs and parrots perched on their shoulders?

- sourceholder, on 03/16/2009, -2/+38Yes, it's called poverty.
- psybermonkey, on 03/17/2009, -1/+34those pirates sure like to smile for the camera. even some of the hijacked crew were smiling.

- cmf2071, on 03/17/2009, -1/+29...but I'd gladly take an identical copy of one.
- k3rfuffl3, on 03/17/2009, -5/+31I read on BBC that one of their reporters tried calling the pirates on a hijacked ship. They didn't respond, but the reporter's kid redialed or something and the pirates had a cute little conversation. The people who were originally piloting ship acted as translators and said himself they were nice guys. In college I did a report on Somalia as well, and I can tell you their condition is one of desperation. They're not robbing people out of CEO/short seller greed, but because they have literally nothing to support themselves with.
- Eupatorus, on 03/16/2009, -2/+25Yarrrr!
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -0/+23You'd drown too if your arms had been blown off.
- mmittimm, on 03/17/2009, -1/+18I came here to make the same sort of comment. Seems like dropping a grenade onto that tethered boat could make quick work of an otherwise complicated situation.
- Klak, on 03/17/2009, -1/+17still not as bad as Nigerian scammers
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -4/+18Is it just me, or are these guys like perfect training targets for Navy Seals and SBS?
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -0/+14I bet it would quite frankly...
- Havoc737903, on 03/17/2009, -3/+16Some of these pictures are amazing. The picture of the confiscated rusty AK-47 speaks volumes about the desperation of these pirates. Most of the pirates look as if their quality of living is pretty poor, as noted by the shoddy condition of their pirate boats. Most of the pirates look as if they don't eat too often either.
- jah37066, on 03/17/2009, -4/+165 "drowned"... right
- rybo1187, on 03/17/2009, -1/+13Im not sure if they are friendly, but it seems like they are happy in a good portion of the photos. This makes me wonder if they know they are going to be set free once they are handed over to the Puntland Authorities. However, I know nothing of the government there, so this is just a rash observation of mine.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -5/+17Awww, well when you put it that way, I support the pirates, it's evil rich nations that forced them to hijack ships, we should be ashamed of ourselves for treating them like criminals.
- imitokay, on 03/17/2009, -0/+11yep, If we blew the ***** out of a few boats, I bet the problem would dissapear quickly
- imitokay, on 03/17/2009, -6/+17you know, if we blew up the next "pirate ships" and crew we see, I bet the problem would solve itself real quick. I don't see why we sould show anyone like that mercy.
- ZellD, on 03/17/2009, -0/+10The fishing rights and toxic dumping are a HUGE problem.
However, I highly doubt a simple fishermen who lost his job suddenly came upon a cash of RPGs and AK-47s, got a bunch of friends, and then started hijacking commercial ships for millions of dollars of ransom. It sounds nice but probably doesn't bear with reality.
These are criminals who are taking advantage of the lawlessness in the same way the toxic dumpers are. No better no worse. - digggggggggg, on 03/17/2009, -1/+10Moe: Okay, you're fighting a guy named Boxcar Bob.
Homer: Brawled his way up from the boxcars, did he?
Moe: Uh, no, not yet, he still lives at the trainyard. But he's a hungry young fighter. In fact, he's actually fighting for a sandwich. - thegrantman, on 03/17/2009, -0/+9Hand out a few AKs' to the crew, add a perimeter alert to the tower, and make a pitcher of gin and tonics.
- ArkRaider1936, on 03/17/2009, -0/+9I've heard that the best shot you've got at fighting pirates is having these aboard your boat
http://blog.globalgiving.com/wp-content/uploads/20 ... - WhoDoneIt, on 03/17/2009, -0/+8You don't need to say anything. Shoving an automatic weapon in ones face says it all.
- Homerr, on 03/17/2009, -3/+11How about Blackwater gets out of Iraq and go guards these ships?
- GoldenGlovez, on 03/17/2009, -1/+9They look awfully happy until a few days later dressed in those fashionable orange suits.
- Evolve, on 03/17/2009, -0/+6Well if you sink enough of them it might... less mouths to feed and all...
But what I cant get over is how the crews just seemingly let them on board, a (lets be honest) dingy floating up to a massive ship and the crew cant figure out how to stop them getting on board... come on. - mKdiR, on 03/17/2009, -1/+7I don't get how huge freighters like those get boarded by skinny little Africans on a small boat, can anyone explain?
- jakv5, on 03/16/2009, -1/+7Amazing Photos! Also check out the shipping blog's section "Inside Piracy":

Good stuff! - bonk2k, on 03/17/2009, -0/+6I thought it was called scurvy?
- Hindermore, on 03/17/2009, -1/+7It seems like they don't have anything to lose so they just don't care that they get caught. It's really tough to try and put yourself in their shoes... If they're even lucky enough to own a pair.
- brownsound00, on 03/17/2009, -3/+9I'll probably get dugg down for this... but...
We could just address the cause of their attacks, i.e. extreme poverty. But then comes the ever so daunting question... how? - Neworab, on 03/17/2009, -1/+7Through that entire thing and they never stopped smiling.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -0/+6There's not as many people on those big ships as you may think. And they're not as well armed as their attackers who also outnumber them.
- Fogell, on 03/17/2009, -3/+9The guy in pic 20 has an NFL jacket haha
On a side note, I feel kinda sorry for them. - bigteebo, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5When was the last time 8 year olds were causing havoc on the high seas?
- QuestionQQQQ, on 03/17/2009, -1/+6why dont they pay pirates with counterfeit money
- RothenbergXXX, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5You know, you don't all have to Digg him down just because he's in the armed services. It's not like his role in protecting sea trade is supporting any ***** war.
- krekc, on 03/17/2009, -4/+9Im not sorry but the only way to deter these 'pirates' is to kill em. Giving into ransoms of millions of dollars only enables them to purchase better weapons and boats so they can keep doing this.
Great job Boston.com on the pics as usual. - Chompy, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5They should shoot every one of them. Turning them over to the "authorities" is a joke.
- SPThom, on 03/17/2009, -1/+6So, piracy is on the rise... Bad for international shipping, good for global temperatures.
- ThanatosST, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5It is another magazine. That way, when the first one is done, you just flip it over and you're ready to go without fumbling with grabbing another magazine from somewhere.
