- ChngeGovernment, on 03/05/2008, -1/+2Hopefully someday we will see prices like this again but I am not holding my breath. $1.59 x 2 = 3.18 and that's still not even what I pay for high grade in California. I believe I payed $3.60 last time I filled up.
- EvilCan, on 03/05/2008, -2/+5Why do you pay for high grade?
- Space_Balls, on 03/05/2008, -5/+3I payed $8,11 yesterday.... :/
- barnett25, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4Some cars (usually with higher than 10-1 compression ratios) require premium gas to prevent damaging detonation in the cylinder.
- ChngeGovernment, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Bingo. I drive a Lexus SC300.
- EvilCan, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Hmm..I always thought the different grades of gas were a scam.
- ukblacknight, on 03/05/2008, -3/+3Wait a sec, are you saying you filled your entire car with $3.60? And you're complaining?? I must be missing something here. Diesel in the UK is around £1.09 ($2.18) PER LITRE. Petrol is usually a couple of pence cheaper, usually costs my girlfriend around £30 to £35 ($60-$75) to fill her 1.0 litre car up.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3He's talking "per gallon"
- ukblacknight, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2That's probably what I was missing - nobody measures fuel prices in gallons here.
- ChngeGovernment, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2Sorry if I was unclear, I did mean per gallon. Crazy Americans, sorry.
I have sympathy for the Europeans who pay more for less gasoline.

God I love Google Calculator.
I've paying about $USD 5.30 per gallon, and thats generally considered pretty cheap on a global scale. so quit yer whinging America.- leahcim, on 03/05/2008, -2/+16How much of the price you pay goes to Taxes?
- Grimdotdotdot, on 03/05/2008, -0/+7Um... What difference does that make?
In the UK we pay approx. $8 a gallon, but then this country hate people that drive.- Fxer, on 03/05/2008, -1/+4What happened to the stereotyped Englishman with good articulation?

- ColorBlind, on 03/05/2008, -2/+2And could you please tell me how many miles you drive on any given day, month, year?
I average around 40 miles a day - 20,000 a year....when you drive as much as we do - you can tell us to stop whining. It also effects our logistic system, which in turn screws us everywhere.- NathanielJ, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4Lots of people drive that much every day, I don't see why you would assume he doesn't just because he's from another country.
I'm Canadian and spend almost $4.50 US per US gallon and drive well over 40 miles per day. Do I get to tell you to stop whining then? I doubt it affects your "logistic system" more than it does ours.- ColorBlind, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1So I assume you are fine with paying that much for your fuel simply because someone overseas has deep pockets?

- daRoach, on 03/05/2008, -0/+15Why were you thinking about gas prices when you were in the 6th grade?

- moonshn, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2when i got my license gas could be had for less that $0.70. I feel old.
and zmojone, try driving a 2500 with a 35 gallon tank... ouch, over $100 every time. - marillion, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Me too. I'm still driving my 9 year old car. When it was new, I used to get Diesel at $0.89US per gallon and I would get 44 miles per gallon. That's over 500 miles per tank for under $10.00. Today, I still get 44 miles per gallon and I pay $3.68 per gallon.
- Bobo44, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4Gas prices - Outrageous..

- AriaStar, on 03/05/2008, -3/+46Remember when it hit a buck fifty and we were all outraged? How the hell could gas be a buck fifty?! And now finding it under $3 (Silicon Valley/Bay Area here) just doesn't happen.
- KIERANMULLEN, on 03/05/2008, -2/+1it is $3.10 in portland oregon... you would think gas could come from alaska?
- AriaStar, on 03/05/2008, -1/+1@ the two above:
I don't keep track of gas prices in other areas, so put that in in case someone happens to be where gas is still $2.93 or something.- itchyfeet, on 03/05/2008, -3/+1It costs at least twice as much in the rest of the civilised world - get used to it you bunch of ***** pussies.
- Memitim, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2They want to base their entire economies on tax money then that's their business. We've got plenty enough socialism mixed in with our capitalism already, thanks.

- AmericansRevolt, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Hell yeah i remember! i remember thinking- how can they raise a gallon of gas by THREE CENTS in one day? thats MILLIONS of cars out there burning google-amounts of gas.
Now they swing gas THIRTY cents in a day without battin an eye. and this is all in a 6 year period. went from an easy to find $1 a gallon to $3.50 in 6 years. Inflation? if it is, were all ***** - gobleepyourself, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Americans could have off-shore rigs working around the clock off California, Oregon & Washington, along with extra drilling in Alaska. But, they can blame the environmentalists for blocking it. As for gas prices, what are ya gonna do? Its an industry that's got us all by the balls-period. Our march into Iraq didn't benefit anybody except oil companies. They are experiencing record profits, and continue to screw us over.
- otis12, on 03/05/2008, -6/+97It sucks to be European, having to pay about 1.40 Euros a liter, or $8.00 a gallon.

- mrASSMAN, on 03/05/2008, -10/+23It's not really $8, it just appears higher due to the suicidal US dollar (and gas-taxes as noted).
- otis12, on 03/05/2008, -5/+7$8.00 is the price after applying the exchange rate.
- mrASSMAN, on 03/05/2008, -0/+19Yes I know.. that's my point. The dollar has dropped so rapidly in relation to the euro that their gas prices will appear to rise in the context of our currency even when they actually aren't paying any more than they did the week before.. I'm not saying their gas isn't more expensive, I'm just saying it's exaggerated a bit due to the circumstances.
- magicaltrevor, on 03/05/2008, -3/+4MrASSMAN: No, EU/UK prices are rocketing up too. 2 years ago, unleaded was 79p a litre in Britain. It's now about £1.05
- LFAB, on 03/05/2008, -0/+5That's 32%. We're up 100%+ in the states. So cry me a river of Euros...
- myak, on 03/05/2008, -1/+2And still, what you're paying after your 100% price increase is waaaaaaaaay less than what we pay in pounds or any other european currency.
- bagelmaster, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2But most of your high prices are because your governments add extra taxes onto it. Being socialist comes at the price of high taxes, don't cry to us about what government style you chose.
- myak, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Or maybe, just maybe, we don't invade other countries under false assumption that they have chemical and/or biological weapons to get oil not at the price of USD but our own soldiers' blood. Just a guess of course. Damn you, socialism!
- LFAB, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2@Myak: If this is a war for oil, then where's my free oil? Exactly.
But I agree on one thing: It's an atrocity the way they have spilled our soldiers' blood for this war. They should prosecute the war with full vengeance, or go home. Not have these guys stand on street corners waiting to be blown up by IED's for 4 years. Bomb the place into the stone age, or get the hell out.
- otis12, on 03/05/2008, -5/+7$8.00 is the price after applying the exchange rate.

- one1plus1one, on 03/05/2008, -1/+10Not to stereotype or anything, but the European chicks seem to be more into kinky sex (including 3-ways). It's worth paying higher fuel prices for the trade off. Plus the babes over there have really hot sounding accents.
So if you're in Europe the solution is simple: Just drive less and ---- more. - ukblacknight, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Diesel at the Tesco down the road is £1.11 per litre, that's over $2 a litre - on the flip side our cars are more fuel efficient.

- TheKrillr, on 03/05/2008, -1/+12wait -- 6 years ago? $0.89?! My god man! I was paying $2.20/gln then!

- Barnolde, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2The more I think about it, the more "like 6" = 10-12. Regardless, it was just weird seeing multiple gas stations for under $1.
- DephexTwin, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1That changes everything. If we are talking 10 years ago, back in 1998, the gas near Little Rock was regularly below that price, and in one gas station I saw it for 67¢. If we go back to 12 years, that was when I first got my license and in the Chicago suburbs the gas on average was just barely over a dollar, maybe $1.05. A lot happened in that 6 year discrepancy, including 9/11!

You weren't paying $2.20, and Barnolde likely paid .89 during '98 or '99(9-10 years ago).. the US averaged below .90 for a few months at the beginning of '99. It rose a bit from '99 to 2002, then it completely exploded in 2003 when the Iraq war began.- ThreeDee912, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Booo. Excel format.
- ThreeDee912, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1I do remember gas being around 0.95 for a few weeks after 9/11. I live in New Jersey. I visit New York often, and the price of gas there was A LOT higher. I guess it depends on where you live.

if it's near the gulf, it's much cheaper since a lot of the oil drilling rigs are there. My sis lives in Texas, and used to pay ~90cents a gallon 7 years ago.- unreg, on 03/05/2008, -0/+0It's not the drilling rigs, it's the refinery and transportation costs. Local taxation and whether the station needs to complete with the one across the stret.
- onedingo, on 03/05/2008, -0/+5I paid about $0.79 / gallon around New Year's 1999.

- brentinkc, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2Totally. I started driving just about 9 years ago and gas was 89 cents/gallon in Kansas City.
- ledguitar, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4Yeah the cheapest I remember ever seeing was 89 cents/gallon (southern California). I don't remember the exact year, but I wish the gas prices were still the same.

We have a failed foreign and monetary policy to thank for our current gas prices. It's not the gas that's gone up, its that the dollar has gone down.

- Mothrog, on 03/05/2008, -3/+8Always nice to see the lack of intelligence on democrats' part. The prices you see were the result of Asian economies going through a major recession which in turn drastically decreased their demand for oil. It has dick to do with who was in the White House.
- MadN, on 03/05/2008, -2/+4"It has dick to do with who was in the White House."
That would be Dick Cheney and Haliburton.- Mothrog, on 03/05/2008, -1/+2You retards really never do give up, do you? OPEC pretty well sets the price of oil and gasoline is an openly traded commodity. - groovechamp30, on 03/05/2008, -2/+2When the White house causes massive unrest and fear in OPECs back yard by invading and killing hundreds of thousands of people it affects the price of oil.

- weezer17, on 03/05/2008, -4/+1I remember when this happened, it was at Midway airport in Chicago. Pretty ***** up situation that the plane tried to land in the horrible conditions that night.
- rspeed, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2I don't think so, that was Southwest Airlines Flight 1248. That was a newer jet than you see in this photo, plus it didn't end up next to a gas station (not to mention that gas in Chicago in late 2005 would have been much more expensive).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Southwest_Airli ... - phauwn, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2I'm pretty sure this is at Burbank Airport:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwest_Airlines_Fl ...
"On March 5, 2000 at 1811 Pacific Standard Time Southwest Flight 1455, a Boeing 737-3T5, overran the end of the runway while landing at Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport. It crashed through a metal blast wall and then through the airport perimeter wall and came to rest on Hollywood Way, a four-lane city street, near a gas station."
I was living nearby and drove over with a couple friends to see it.... we couldn't get that close, but it was in fact a Chevron station. - av8eire, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1It was Burbank. There's a Chevron station right of the east end of runway 8. They came in too high and too fast and landed halfway down a very short runway, went through the barricade and ended up at the Chevron station. If it were Midway, there would be a couple of inches of snow as that accident was directly related to poor braking in a snowstorm in Chicago.
And, no, that's not snow on the ground, it's fire retardant foam...

- rexblade, on 03/05/2008, -2/+12I recently saw a report that Iraq is producing something like 6million gallons a day in oil. Dont rip me cuz im to tired to hunt it down right now, anyways its way more then they used to yet our prices are still crazy they are still struggling (Iraq citizens) and the oil companies are still posting record profits every year. So WTF? Ok ok Dubai is "neat" and everything (halliburtons new headquarters) but its bad enough this ***** war even happened but when is enough enough? We are paying for the war in blood and taxes and getting a trashed dollar to show for it.
- Trudheim, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2The price at the pumps here, in Farnborough, UK, today - for 95RON Unleaded - is £1.059 *per liter*. Diesel is £1.089 if I remember right. With the GBP/USD exchange rate at 1:1.99, you're looking at approximately US$2.11 *per liter*.
I am fully expecting to see 95RON unleaded to cost £1.99/l at the pumps in about ten years, maybe in less time than that.- EgaoNoGenki, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1$2.11/liter * 3.785 liters to the gallon = (faints before answer is uttered.)

- compulsive1, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1In central PA a gallon of regular 87 octane goes for 3.19 today, but diesel is 4.24! Doesn't make sense to buy a diesel car. Your savings in efficiency go straight to state coffers and you end up spending more money for the vehicle.
- PhilThePhenom, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2Screw Santa Barbara! I was a broke ass college student up there, not because I didn't have money, but because everything is catered to the elitist ***** snobs that move up there when they're too good for LA.
- bmh67wa, on 03/05/2008, -0/+19My father owned a gas station when I was a wee tyke back in the early 70's (before the big panic/gas crunch era) and I remember that Regular was 29 cents a gallon and Supreme (there was no unleaded yet) was like 36 cents or so. This was when you got your oil checked, windows washed, air checked in the tires, and someone else pumped for you. Talk about the changing times!

- jonnyboy1544, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Ahhh the days of leaded gasoline!
- atomicfireball, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2Well, $0.29 in 1970 is worth $3.87 today when calculated using the percent of GDP method. There are other ways to measure how much money from another time would be worth today, but ones like the CPI are heavily skewed by the fact that so much manufacturing got offshored in the eighties. So, while I don't like it any more than anybody else, gas really isn't that much more expensive than it was in 1970 in real terms. I mean, you could buy a nice house in the burbs back then for $20,000. The problem was that gas prices increased more slowly than most goods for much of the last forty years, with certain exceptions, like the gas crisis of the seventies. It is also true, however, that many people make less today than they did in 1970 in real dollar terms, and you can thank Reagonomics and other flawed conservative faith-based economic strategies designed to make the rich richer for that.
