- FlamingYak, on 01/24/2009, -6/+289We are undergoing a complete restoration of awesomeness.
- Natooken, on 01/23/2009, -12/+246But then the terrorist are going to blow it up!
- plutoniumdynamo, on 01/23/2009, -4/+158But the invisible purple unicorn will ward them off!
- ZincSaucier, on 01/24/2009, -6/+154the reopening of the crown is not obama's doing. stupid stupid stupid headline
- spiffyfitz, on 01/24/2009, -1/+60How can something possibly be invisible AND purple at the same time? I think you're just making things up now.
- ScottMcIntyre, on 01/23/2009, -0/+57I missed going up to the top of Lady Liberty when I was in New York a few years ago- though I went on the ferry around it. Maybe I should go back and add this to the tourist to-do list.
- Akairenn, on 01/24/2009, -2/+57I love the right wing; it's so fun to watch them wet themselves in baseless fear.
Home of the brave, indeed. - DigitalisAkujin, on 01/24/2009, -1/+55There is airport-like security just to get in.
- Gooseisland10, on 01/24/2009, -3/+47Don't get it, didn't mention Obama once in the article... Also, please change 'to reopen' to 'wants to reopen' and also scratch out Obama.
- KMye, on 01/24/2009, -1/+39To be fair, immediately after 9/11, everything like this seemed like a choice, symbolic target. But hopefully, now that perhaps Americans have become used to the idea of terrorism's reality and possibility, we can get back to living life as we'd like to. I haven't been back there after 7/7, but somehow I doubt Britain's closed down St Paul's or the Eye...
- PhantomPhoenix, on 01/24/2009, -1/+37Airport security is mostly "security theater", or didn't you know?
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/12/18/60minute ... - ShingoEX, on 01/24/2009, -6/+33The terrorists wouldn't want to attack the Statue of Liberty. It was stupid to close it. The 9/11 attacks weren't an attack on "symbolism"...they were specific strikes
World Trade Center - they wanted to cripple the economy
Pentagon - they wanted to cripple our military defense
The attempt on the White House - they wanted to kill our leaders.
Attacking the Statue of Liberty would serve no meaningful purpose for them whatsoever. - geoboy, on 01/24/2009, -1/+22Instead, Cheney was president for 8 years.
- xjosephko, on 01/24/2009, -2/+21Rad. I've always wanted to go in there.
- AFelsinger, on 01/23/2009, -1/+18apparently they changed the title to "Obama Wants to Reopen..." so I guess it's not as surefire of a thing as they thought
- 007brendan, on 01/24/2009, -1/+17It's the Statue of Liberty for crying out loud! People have been climbing to the top of it for over a century and suddenly, it's developed all these fire hazards? When did Americans become such pussies? Just accept the fact that everything isn't handicap accessible, and that nothing is completely and utterly safe.
- jrm125, on 01/24/2009, -1/+16@mileswj
Well for one thing it makes us actually stand by our supposed principles of freedom, due process, fair trial, etc. Then we don't look like the world's bully and give people greater reason to hate us in the first place. - 2Six119, on 09/10/2009, -1/+16Way to piss on our Obama barbecue. Our Obamacue. Our Barbebama... no...Obamacue.
- inactive, on 01/24/2009, -0/+15Yes, it does at the moment since businesses and residents are leaving due to cost of living and state property taxes.
- Aethirig, on 01/24/2009, -0/+14If they blow it up, JC Denton will get right on it.
- theaceoffire, on 01/24/2009, -2/+16Have you noticed that everyone on Fox calls Obama the messiah, the second coming, etc, but that no Democrat ever has?
And yet, that is enough to convince the retards that this is what we democrats believe?
Apparently if we could get all Democrats to call Bush a pedophile, it would become true! - dinosarefriends, on 01/24/2009, -7/+20Why is this called "Obama wants to reopen Statue of Liberty"? He isn't even mentioned in the article!
- jturbo, on 01/24/2009, -0/+13I misread "terrorist" to-do list...
- ShootTheCore, on 01/24/2009, -1/+12My god imagine if Bush had been killed in 9/11... Cheney would have been the president for at least 3 years...
- emoment, on 01/24/2009, -0/+10lmao
- bluepass, on 01/24/2009, -0/+10But I thought the Cloverfield monster ripped it off.
- 007brendan, on 01/24/2009, -0/+9The way it used to work is you got a ticket to board a ferry to liberty island, and then if you wanted to go up to the crown, you waited in an incredibly long line. I don't see why that model wouldn't work today.
- KaiUno, on 01/24/2009, -1/+10They have CCTV cameras everywhere. They don't just see what the terrorists are doing, they're watching and recording everyone!
- Kestrel, on 01/24/2009, -0/+9So ridiculous... so much fear for something that you can't stop anyway.
You've missed the point of dealing with terrorists, who exist to change your way of life. You need to accept the fact that while you can stop most attacks, some are going to get through and, on occasion, you're going to get a bloody nose. The whole point, though, is to NOT let it change the way you live your life. You need to be bloody-minded and go about your daily business, regardless of what they do. Cowering in fear and instituting all sorts of security measures that really serve only to inconvenience YOU (i.e. not the terrorists) is not the way to deal with this problem.
Let me put it this way... if you are fighting to preserve your way of life, then what is it that you are fighting to preserve when you throw away that lifestyle to prevent it from being destroyed? There's no logic in that.
Now I know you're probably going to come back and accuse me of being a 'libtard' who wants to hug terrorists or perhaps you'll use the other stand-by and call me euro-trash who doesn't know what it's like to live with the constant threat of terrorism, so let me save you some time:
1. I'm a conservative, not a liberal. I am not an American conservative, however.
2. I'm from the UK - do you know how many times in the 70's and 80's things were being blown up by the IRA? So, yes, I do know what it's like to live with terrorism occurring around me. - Suricou, on 01/24/2009, -1/+10I get the impression from earlier comments that ABC has revised the page since submission.
- mrASSMAN, on 01/24/2009, -2/+10First of all there's no indication yet Obama himself authorized the strikes, they have been ongoing for years. Second, it wasn't Pakistan that was attacked, it was militants within, which Pakistan in the past has requested cooperative assistance in targeting. Did you think Obama just sat in his chair on the 2nd day and suddenly announced "let's drop a couple bombs on Pakistan! ya kno dawgs, just fo teh ***** and giggles"?
- ripismoney, on 01/24/2009, -0/+8We aren't talking about giving terrorists easy routes to hijack planes or import explosives here, we are just giving people the freedom to enjoy an American landmark again. An attack on the statue would probably be a little more grand scale than someone who is already inside anyway. There is taking sensible precautions and there is living in fear. I vote for the former.
- fpaudon, on 01/24/2009, -0/+8...and this marks the 20th time I'm reinstalling the game
- inactive, on 01/24/2009, -0/+8I assume you are a newyorker. You are the only people that hate tourists.
- Suricou, on 01/24/2009, -1/+8I don't think it's his call - he has great power at the federal level, but this is probably a state matter. What he can do is apply a bit of political pressure.
- GalacticRerun, on 01/24/2009, -0/+7As long as it's open to the Ghostbusters I don't care who can't go in there.
- themastersb, on 01/24/2009, -0/+7That sounds pretty menacing. If I saw anything invisible and purple I know I wouldn't try starting any *****.
- knifesideleft, on 01/24/2009, -0/+7I was making a statement about the general idea that at least some commentators here on Digg have about terrorists wanting to destroy the statue and never did I say my statement was directly aimed at the article. Thank you for playing as well.
- rocketman42, on 01/24/2009, -2/+8Wow, I can't believe someone thinks that. Destroying the WTC towers doesn't cripple the economy. It just destroys two buildings and quite a few people. It just so happens those buildings were, wait for it, symbols of American capitalism. All those financial firms can set up new offices elsewhere and continue to operate.
And crashing into the Pentagon wouldn't cripple our military. It's not like without the Pentagon all of a sudden the entire military has no idea how to operate and planes fall out of the sky, ships sink, and tanks run out of gas. But it is, you guessed it, the symbol of American military power.
The same with the White House. That is a symbol of American democracy. Bush wasn't even there. I don't know where Cheney was, but say worst case he was there and they kill him. You still have the entire Congress and the President to operate the government.
That's really sad that over seven years later and people still don't understand what 9/11 was. - chanop, on 01/24/2009, -0/+6They've been talking about doing this before anyone on digg knew who Obama was. I don't think it mattered who got elected it would have happened. This wasn't Obama signing a piece of paper re-opening it.
- MrApocalypse, on 01/24/2009, -0/+6Blasphemy! Everyone knows that the invisible unicorn is pink and not purple!
- Kanten, on 01/24/2009, -1/+7"The Obama administration wants to reopen the crown, but certain safety measures have to be in place first."
- scorchingtruth, on 01/24/2009, -0/+5I disagree. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hope and freedom to many around the world. Attacking it would take that symbolic statue away.
- odigity, on 01/24/2009, -10/+16You mean except for him bombing Pakistan, right?
http://digg.com/world_news/Suspected_U_S_Missile_S ... - G001, on 01/24/2009, -2/+8It's still a misleading title. It should be "Obama ADMINISTRATION wants to..." Specifically, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. I was wondering why the hell Obama would be concerning himself with something at this level when there are much bigger problems to attend to. It turns out, he's not.
But, you know, "Obama" in a headline generates attention. Ken Salazar, not so much. - chanop, on 01/24/2009, -0/+5Make sure you do it on the hottest day in august.......
- 007brendan, on 01/24/2009, -0/+5Have you ever been inside the statue of liberty? It's a wonder they were able to fit the current stairs in there.
- edmoser, on 01/24/2009, -1/+6Obama has nothing to do with this. It's politicians from NY and NJ doing this, one of whom just so happens to be in his administration. I doubt Obama gives two ***** about this considering all the more pressing things he has to deal with.
- jetboyterp, on 01/24/2009, -1/+6Well, misleading title there...Obama can't decide whether or not to open Liberty's crown. He can suggest it, push for it, but it's not his decision.
