- Dipsomaniac, on 04/20/2009, -1/+105That's about the most depressing thing I've ever seen. I hadn't ever really imagined an entire country of human ants before, but that's what's been created there.
- Shogi, on 04/21/2009, -5/+98We should go free the ***** out of them.
- copypastry, on 04/22/2009, -0/+78Who can take a sunrise,
Sprinkle it with dew?
Cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two
The Kim Jong-il, the Kim Jong-il can,
The Kim Jong-il can 'cause he mixes it with BRILLIANT STRATEGY AND REVOLUTIONARY HEROISM
and makes the REVOLUTIONARY STRONGHOLD OF NORTH KOREA taste VICTORIOUS - PoliticsGrad, on 04/20/2009, -0/+75Can you imagine what the isolated people of North Korea would think if they were allowed to see how the rest of the world is living? The people have been oppressed to force reliance upon and devotion to Kim Jong Il, no dissent can be expressed. This limits the opportunity and chances that anti government action can be taken by the DPRK's citizens.
- Chooxo, on 04/22/2009, -0/+74I'd be more creeped out if everybody smiled all the time.
- fightingforair, on 04/22/2009, -1/+66A businessman looking to open a chocolate factory?
Seriously? He got in with that story?
Damn, any idiot can run the security of a brainwashed country. - mkamal, on 04/22/2009, -3/+62But.. but... there is no oil there!
- danconia, on 04/22/2009, -1/+58Only like 10 pics? I was expecting at least a good 25...
I highly recommend you search "North Korea" on Flickr and check out some of the photos taken from the official foreigners tour of Pyongyang. For a city with millions of people it can be interesting how empty many of the streets and squares are. And sometimes when people do come out, it's in humongous events like the Arirang (sp?, Google it some time, has set the record for the most people occupying a stadium at one time) or other dancing events on North Korean holidays (the most celebrated of course being the birthdays of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il). - e8989, on 04/22/2009, -3/+54looking at these pictures makes me so angry that a city slightly north of one of the most prosperous cities where I was born (Seoul) could be so devoid of life and joy...
we really need to get on this. - nighthawk8713, on 04/22/2009, -3/+52War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength - WorGul, on 04/22/2009, -3/+46To be fair, the south also pressure-cook their children in private academies that rob them of their childhood, work obsessively hard and then spend much of their free time binge-drinking soju to relieve the pressure, and rely on outlets like fanatical christianity and obsessive video gaming... I live here and like the place in many ways but it's hardly the healthiest society. The unsmiling demeanour of the pics would not be out of place in the south, even if the poverty largely is.
- EntropyFan, on 04/20/2009, -8/+48That is about as far from Socialism as you can get.
Just because they call themselves 'Communists' doesn't mean they are. You expect to see the government wither away like Marx/Engels predicted? You think they share the wealth equally?
Socialism is a government taking care of the basic needs of its citizens. What do you think their healthcare system is like?
- Tyrghast, on 04/22/2009, -1/+40lets just go on a government toppling spree, just for the hell of it
- allisonaxe, on 04/22/2009, -2/+38which is the exactly only reason we haven't gone and freed the ***** out of them! all else considered, north korea scares the hell out of me far more than anyone in the middle east ever could.
- Mokshaguy390, on 04/22/2009, -0/+34FTA: North Korean biographers, striving to make Kim his more revered father’s equal, insist a swallow foretold his birth and attribute a spate of superhuman characteristics to him—the ability to manipulate time among them.
Now that exceeds even the craziest things that I've heard about North Korea. - Megatronz, on 04/22/2009, -0/+33It's like Bizarro World over there.
- hawkspur, on 04/22/2009, -1/+31It's like Orwell splooged out a country.
- smacksaw, on 04/22/2009, -2/+32Screw you Kim Jong Il, you arthritic illiterate!
(that last slide was totally worth it - epic smack) - elperegrino, on 04/22/2009, -0/+29he manipulated his country back 50 years
- KibblesnBitts, on 04/22/2009, -0/+28The Korean peninsula is basically one of the most unethical experiments you can have. This works both ways, but I'll just state it in this scenario: You have the control - South Korea - globalizing and keeping up with the rest of the world and you have the experimental - North Korea - a government shut off from the rest of the world for all intents and purposes while being led by a crazed dictator.
After half a century, North Koreans live shorter lives, are physically shorter, and their quality of life hasn't improved while South Korea remains on par or is better than most of the world.
***** North Korea - jboyd88, on 04/21/2009, -2/+28Damn now I want to go to north Korea just to see how bad it is.
- fightingforair, on 04/22/2009, -1/+26*****, did you miss the photos? Not one person was smiling.
AND we all know chocolate=smiles. - flamyngo, on 04/22/2009, -15/+39And here in America our factory workers are all smiles and rainbows. Must be the great econom---
oh wait. - smacksaw, on 04/22/2009, -2/+25Yes, because it's exactly like Sweden and nothing like North Korea. Personally, I think Sweden is pretty great.
Do the Swedes seem particularly poor, unhappy or repressed to you? - CaptainStar, on 04/22/2009, -0/+22Anyone who hasn't gotten a chance to see this short documentary series about visiting North Korea should check it out. Pretty interesting stuff.
http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=1438428757 - abrasion, on 04/22/2009, -0/+21If North Korea fascinates you, I can't recommend this documentary enough.
http://www.vbs.tv/shows/north-korea/ - quomen, on 04/22/2009, -2/+20I am no proponent for socialism, but North Korea is an example of Totalitarianism.
- Shogi, on 04/21/2009, -4/+22Thank you AsylumAleikum for perpetuating the massive misunderstanding most people have about Communism and Socialism.
- wpyh, on 04/22/2009, -0/+18We need the Google Street View van to travel around North Korea.
- DigitalisAkujin, on 04/22/2009, -2/+18You clearly don't know what socialism is.
- TheCash, on 04/22/2009, -7/+22Oh come on, that was funny.
Puritans. - inactive, on 04/22/2009, -1/+16Here, sir, please take this enormous fistfull of sparkly new internets. They're yours now; you won them with your hilarious comment.
- TheCash, on 04/22/2009, -32/+46Well if you came from the land of tiny penises, would you be smiling?
- rsmith32, on 04/22/2009, -1/+15on the other hand, how many people do you see smiling in photos of subways, trams and assembly lines in other countries?
- loopyloopy, on 04/22/2009, -0/+14i watched a bit of the World Cup qualifier between North and South Korea recently, and couldnt help but wonder what the Southerners might be saying to their opponents on the field........like "dude, you're being duped man, give it up already" (in Korean of course)
- Digg32539, on 04/22/2009, -2/+16so you mean the United States is the only place where people smile?
- DigitalisAkujin, on 04/22/2009, -0/+14Can we just bomb them with South Korean newspapers going back five decades?
- inactive, on 04/22/2009, -0/+13They don't permit the regular citizenry to have frivolous things like chocolate. Any chocolate factory in North Korea would only be there to take advantage of it's cheap labor, and all of the products would be exported. Sad, but true.
- smacksaw, on 04/22/2009, -3/+16Where capitalism and libertarianism win over socialism and communism is they take human nature into account. I mean that as a backhanded compliment.
You cannot have that sort of North Korean society without a leader, and as we know absolute power corrupts absolutely. These dictators are a product of the system. You can't have this system without making that sort of person because there is no check or balance to prevent it.
That's why it's called Utopia.
Communism and socialism appeal to a standard that cannot be achieved, while capitalism and libertarianism take into account even the worst of human nature. Now that I've pissed everyone off, I'll sum it up with pointing out that while you can't fight human nature, you can live in-between the ideals of the far extremes. - wtrwlkr, on 04/22/2009, -1/+14Sadly, even though I'm interested in North Korea and loved the photos, I'm going to have to bury this one due to 8 photos on 8 seperate pages and that ***** pop-up that covers the picture on EVERY SINGLE PAGE!
- evergrim, on 04/22/2009, -0/+13Good point. At least you can tell the people realize it sucks.
- danconia, on 04/22/2009, -0/+13Hey... North Koreans like their chocolate.
- GaltShrugged, on 04/22/2009, -0/+13In the words of the late Bill Hicks, "Yeah, maybe, but you know what, after the first 3 largest armies, there's a REAL big ***** drop-off."
- sloppychris, on 04/22/2009, -0/+12Check out the Ryugyong Hotel, a giant 105 story centrally planned hotel that was built than later abandoned for 16 years.
"There had been some question about whether North Korea had the raw materials or energy for such a massive project.[2] A government official said in 2008 that construction had previously been halted when funds ran out. [8]"

It was really hard not to get preachy in this comment. - inactive, on 04/22/2009, -0/+12Herro, I'm the Doctor
- fury420, on 04/22/2009, -1/+13question for you, how are North Koreans terrorists? I for one cannot think of any terrorist actions in the past 20 years purpetrated by North Korea, or people from North Korea, and trying to count their "satellite launches" is a huge stretch
- Digg32539, on 04/22/2009, -0/+12I traveled to Canada. In Toronto, there was some one who smiled on a subway train. It happens. Not everyone has a frozen heart. I wish I could thaw mine.
- qazws, on 04/22/2009, -0/+11Don't they smile to Mr. Kim or is it the other way around. He smiles here in this pic
http://riverdaughter.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/k ...
This is for laughs, seriously Mr. Kim NSFW (half safe).
