- Lavarock, on 06/14/2009, -1/+34Wow I.... surfing was actually illegal in Chicago. I'll be *****.
- YokohamaGaijin, on 06/14/2009, -1/+26Dugg for the big pasty white ass
- ethanator1088, on 06/14/2009, -0/+24Maybe Wind Surfing will catch on, but I do not see actual surfing.
- Chakz, on 06/14/2009, -1/+12Not on Digg you won't.
- onimusha115, on 06/14/2009, -0/+9I don't see why not, it just may be dangerous because the good waves are during the winter. I would think if the city posts signs about it being at your own risk they should be ok liability wise.
- mecharabbit, on 06/14/2009, -0/+9Careful...Lake Michigan has some dangerous rip currents and/or undertows.
- NMRgentleman, on 06/14/2009, -1/+9Wow, Chicago is actually making a change to INCREASE freedom? This is not the Chicago I know.
- Chronoped, on 06/14/2009, -1/+9At least we wouldn't have to worry about sharks. Just all the dead bodies and diseases.
- Robozilla, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6YES! Now I can spend the summer surfing those 12 inch waves! I love that warm 49 degree water!
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6Cool story.
- SemiSarcastic, on 06/14/2009, -3/+9Anyone remember that episode of "Seinfeld" when Crammer swims in the Hudson bay and begins to smell like *****?
- highdef, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4Never seen waves big enough to surf in Chicago. Except during storms...
EDIT: I beat you to it RTFA highdef! - HappyScrappy, on 06/14/2009, -1/+5The Hudson Bay?
I think you mean the Hudson River. The Hudson Bay is in the arctic up in Canada. - tmyprod, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4"But, given the risk of being ticketed and fined $500"
(Damn it .... read article THEN post.) - overridemymind, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4FTA: "The move will effectively legalize surfing in the heart of the Midwest, and make Chicago an unlikely beachfront in the war to extend surfing's influence across the country."
War to... war... to... wait... what? WTF! Why? Who the hell decided it was cool to tag everything with the word "war"? The WAR to extend surfing's influence -- how about "the movement to extend surfing's influence"? - Chicagoland, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4People have been surfing the great lakes for decades
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiEi59gm0io - Nature1, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3What waves do they intend to surf? I have only seen big waves on a few occasions, 99% of them being ones that crash against the barrier...
- rushiku, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3When surfing, you spend 99%, or more, of your time in the water. In fact, if it wasn't for that <1%, surfing would be called "paddling" and people would say things like "Hey dude, I went paddling yesterday and...", "Let me stop you right there, I counted paperclips yesterday, and obviously had a much better time than you, let me tell you about that instead"
Also, cold water can be dealt with by the use of a wetsuit, or if it's really cold, a drysuit. - widgetking, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3Born and lived in Chicago most of my life, and I'm thinking of moving out. We are being nickeled and dimed here on everything. They just increased the parking meters from $.25 to $1.00 an hour and we have the largest sales tax in the nation. Just about every intersection has a camera to catch you running the red light ($100 fine), yet they are cutting back on all basic services (garbage collections, road repairs, etc). Oh, by the way, the police are almost as bad as the criminals. A 5' female bartender was beaten up by an off-duty cop because she refused to serve him (he had too much to drink) and was caught on tape. He is claiming it was self-defense. This incident happen about a mile from where I live. Unfortunately, this cop story is very common around here. Oh and don't forget our Governor who was just impeach for corruption (and our last Governor before him is serving time).
- nsapra, on 06/14/2009, -1/+4I was unaware that surfing was illegal in Chicago.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3keep reading dummy
"Bears and the Bulls, the Sox and the Cubs, and, Chicagoans are only recently willing to admit, the Blackhawks." - asgardshill, on 06/14/2009, -1/+4Visit Creepygif.com to view this GIF animation.
??? - DiggMasterJ, on 06/14/2009, -3/+6The implication you derived from the word mecca was of your own imagination. Chicago has two baseball teams, two hockey teams(hawks, wolves) the Chicago Fire, Da Bulls, the Bears, is the 2016 Olympic host finalist, has one of the nations most expansive parks and recreations programs, hosts numerous marathons, bike races, boat races, has some of the best sports facilities both professional; like Soldier Field, but more importantly recreational; like the Windy City Field house. A mecca Chicago is, qualified to judge you are not.
- kukurio, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3Well, according to the CommonCensus MLB map, there's a large number of people who actually do live in Illinois and aren't Cubs (or Sox) fans.
http://www.commoncensus.org/sports_map.php?sport=2 - PandaOnIce, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2If your looking for a place to surf, I'd think Chicago would be pretty far down the list.
- d03boy, on 06/14/2009, -2/+4Here's why you shouldn't: http://gocomplainontheinternet.com/2008/12/09/chic ...
- diggydougie, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2You would be surprised. That lake looks (and acts) like an ocean. But I didn't notice any surfable waves though.
White rock lake near the spillway is fun after a heavy rain. - diggydougie, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2War is hell....you just don't know what it's like out there.
- falconear, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2I don't think we're talking about "podunk community lake" here. We're talking about Lake Michigan. They don't call it a GREAT lake because people like it a lot. Any sufficiently large enough body of water can have waves.
- DamnMan, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2Legalize It!... Wait, what?
- Brassbud, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Watch out for the zebra mussels, very sharp. Maybe if you got pulled by a boat it could be fun. Now how about legalizing trucks so I won't have to bring a board on the train?
- tmyprod, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Also be on alert for Chicago's native aquatic African Zebra, they're biters.
- streetdaddy, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1"Waves during a storm may reach 20 ft. and appear roughly every six to eight seconds"
In a lake? I doubt it... - slyzxx, on 06/14/2009, -1/+2" Bears and the Bulls, the Sox and the Cubs." Forgot the famous Blackhawks
- Musk, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Well I don't see why it shouldn't be legal/allowed.
But I suspect you'd have to be pretty desperate for a surf to take your board to the shores of Lake Michigan! I don't recall seeing many surfable waves when I was there. - diggydougie, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1When did this country shift from the position that all is legal except that which is prohibited to one where all is illegal except where allowed by law?
- stevo2009, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1hell ya especially on the trinity river lol
- and303, on 06/17/2009, -0/+1That's cool that you've seen some pictures of people surfing in the Great Lakes, really.
I happen to live about a block from Lake Michigan and have spent my life doing recreational activities there, including being a life guard for 8 years as a teenager and young adult. The most dangerous thing is not the rocks or temperatures...it is the undercurrents. This is because the bottom of the lake has huge drop-offs instead of a gradual decline like most large bodies of water do. This causes a large rip current and results in a number of drownings every single year.
Since you've posted photographs of people surfing, I'm assuming you haven't actually researched anything that you said...so I took the liberty to do it for you...

If you do end up paddling way out there, goood luck. - hannahmar, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1I moved from Hawaii to Chicago about a year ago. This makes me feel a little more at home
- zagatbuzz, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1Thanks for the update, sounds pretty cool!
@spielmitmir- The water may be freezing, but when has that stopped surfers before? - YourNameHere1, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Here is a list of some surf spots in the Great Lakes: http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/North_America/USA/No ...
(with photos!)
I've never surfed the Great Lakes, but I have seen 'waist-to-shoulder-high' hollow waves that were glassy and peeling nicely in Ohio. I saw it from the inside of an Amtrak train traveling along the shore of Lake Erie on the way to Chicago (NYC to West Coast).
I can surf pretty good (I first started in 1987 and used to compete a bit), and I know what ridable waves look like..... these waves looked real fun if you can handle cold water temps and air temps. - DiggMasterJ, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1The red and white sign painted on the rocks at the bottom right is the no diving sign. Lolz
- petethepanda, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Hey, some of us were still Blackhawks fans through the dark years :(
- ancientshoes, on 06/14/2009, -1/+2surfing on a lake....lol. here in dallas people windsurf on lakes all the time but there is no way you could 'surf-surf' on any lake
- supersayanyoda, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Maybe they might be better skimboarding spots than surf spots.
- jcrew77, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Why are they Cubs fan? Because the Red Sox are now winners and they needed another team of lovable losers to make themselves feel better?
- and303, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1Buried, this is way out of context. Legalizing flotation devices like boogie boards and floating tanning cots doesn't mean the city is trying to push itself as a surf-mecca.
In the rare occasion that the waves would be high enough to SURF, the undertow and riptide would be so strong that you'd never make it back to shore. The currents in Lake Michigan are a lot more dangerous than the oceans. - rezivor, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1no ocean, but a giant ***** lake.
- nopow, on 06/15/2009, -0/+1I live in Chicago. The waves are 10 inches high.
