- holychicken, on 09/11/2009, -8/+509It's cool and all, but the headline is blatant sensationalism. There is no way to get from Japan to Korea with only 2 dollars. He had to make money along the way, which he did.
It is still cool, but to make it sound like he spent almost NO money in 5 years is almost lying. - itwasstinky2, on 09/12/2009, -0/+343this man climbed mount Everest and fought pirates. holy *****.
- ChileanGoD, on 09/12/2009, -1/+284you fool! you could have traveled the world.
- themanicho, on 09/12/2009, -4/+261Hell. I just spent $2 to digg this from my phone.
- zslice, on 09/12/2009, -1/+172you need to get a new phone plan.
- goodbick, on 09/12/2009, -3/+162Story could really use a lot more detail. Where did he sleep? How did he eat? How has he kept that bike together for 8 years, especially with all that cargo weighing it down? And most importantly, what the hell kind of "tricks" was he performing? Unless he was sucking dick, I doubt he could consistently make enough money, in 36 different countries, to feed, shelter, and clothe himself.
- EarlOfLade, on 09/12/2009, -4/+134There's an app for that....
- orangysb, on 09/12/2009, -5/+100you mean chuck norris was the white bruce lee
sorry but bruce lee came before chuck norris and owns chuck norris - rolf, on 09/12/2009, -2/+85I came to this world with $0, not even ,pockets! And I've been traveling all these years for nothing, I guess>.> Oh wait:
"Mr Iwasaki said he raised funds from performing tricks, and only his “strong will” has kept him on his bike."
I guess that $2 really didn't get him all the way... but this here is still very cool and actually better than the $2 part:
"He cycled over 45,000 kilometres during his marathon adventure and become the first Japanese man to climb Mount Everest from sea level without using any transportation."
P.S. I can't even get the bikes I buy to last 1,000 miles before they just keep falling apart, what am I doing wrong? - Jonsend, on 09/12/2009, -0/+76One of his tricks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hAq1j0XuPc
- mike23w, on 09/12/2009, -8/+82He's the Asian Chuck Norris.
- Gndoab, on 09/12/2009, -2/+75dugg for suggestion that he was sucking *****.
- Nintendesert, on 09/12/2009, -0/+72I bet the pirates were pissed when they found out he only had $2.
- tgc1, on 09/12/2009, -4/+73Can you suck dick? Then you can travel the world for free.
- Floobins, on 09/12/2009, -2/+70Clearly you are not buying Japanese bikes.
- Stoyanov, on 09/12/2009, -1/+63Illusions, Michael. Tricks are what a whore does for money... or candy!
- DiggMeUpPlz, on 09/12/2009, -5/+62What about the guy who traded a paper clip for a house...no money involved...

- HeavyWave, on 09/12/2009, -1/+50Every time someone says "you fool!" I hear it in Gandalf's voice for some reason.
- Gndoab, on 09/12/2009, -2/+44he bartered, which is the reason why we have money (to make it easier to value bartering)
(not to mention that he spent many, many hours trying to find people to barter with, and many many hours chasing dead leads. nothing is free) - agbullet, on 09/12/2009, -1/+41Performing tricks, eh?
- jer2eydevil88, on 09/12/2009, -0/+38I think you erase the line when you start fighting pirates.
- Gndoab, on 09/12/2009, -0/+35No!
- hiPpymIck, on 09/12/2009, -0/+32theres more deatails in UK Telegraph
"In total Mr Iwasaki has cycled over 45,000km (27,961 miles) on his favourite Raleigh shopper bikes but two have been stolen and two have broken so he now rides his fifth."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/61671 ... - NexusP, on 09/12/2009, -0/+30You'll have to wait for the book.
- jeffness, on 09/12/2009, -3/+33fine line between homeless bum and world exploring hero isn't there.
- CRCulver, on 09/12/2009, -0/+30Sure. Either I or my close friends have received abundant hospitality from locals in the following countries:
Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Vietnam, Mauritania, Sudan, Turkey, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, Namibia, Madagascar, Mali, Albania, Iran, Iraq (Kurdish portion), Mongolia, Malaysia, Yemen, Armenia, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Oman, Palestinian Territories, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China (Xinjiang region), Lebanon, and Tanzania. Additionally, though Ukraine, Russia and Belarus aren't countries you would typically think of as super-hospitable, nearly every town has a so-called vpiska, something like a squat but legally owned, where you can sleep and eat in a communal atmosphere and plenty of people there don't have any money. - TravelChannel, on 09/11/2009, -2/+31I would love to see a trick...
- bdbr, on 09/12/2009, -0/+28...and climb Mt Everest.
- inactive, on 09/12/2009, -1/+28There's a company willing to fleece you for that
- jpoopman, on 09/12/2009, -1/+27more tricks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMLKZwMqTKk&NR= ... - Qumahlin, on 09/12/2009, -1/+26I always find it funny when people on Digg who have never left the US in their lives comment on other countries solely based on what they hear in the news then are surprised to learn that in other countries especially 3rd world countries people are actually nice and helpful.
I've been treated better by strangers in China than I have by people in the US...consistently and I am not of asian descent. - Zaxcomp, on 09/12/2009, -0/+24Have some respect there, that's Plato you are talking to.
- givemeabeer, on 09/12/2009, -0/+23you also have to remember he was traveling through 3rd world countries or developing countries for most of his travels, so food and such is much much cheaper. i know, i lived in China for a summer and you could buy big beers for $0.15 or less. but i doubt he drank beers, just giving an example. it's not hard to travel cheap, most people just choose not to.
the other stuff, have no idea, but definitely looking forward to his book. - CRCulver, on 09/12/2009, -0/+22"Unless he was sucking dick, I doubt he could consistently make enough money, in 36 different countries, to feed, shelter, and clothe himself."
I could easily name 36 countries where, as a foreigner, you will be fed, sheltered and clothed by the local people, who would get offended if you tried to return their generosity with money. As the experience of Russian hitchhiking clubs like the Academy of Free Travel show, you don't need money to see the world. - Vindexus, on 09/12/2009, -0/+20He throws bandannas?
- ImperialSoren, on 09/12/2009, -0/+18the universal currency
- Kaegro, on 09/12/2009, -0/+18Jackie Chan?
- inactive, on 09/12/2009, -1/+19The original (and better) version said cocaine.
- bitcloud, on 09/12/2009, -0/+17it's easier to PLACE a value on things with money, but as one red paperclip guy demonstrates, those values are in the eye of the beholder.
- adhiza, on 09/12/2009, -1/+17I'd love to be brave enough to drop everything and do that. Too bad I'm not :(
- sageerrant, on 09/12/2009, -0/+15"Ninja in disguise" is a little redundant.
- VValdWaffle, on 09/12/2009, -0/+14I have a new goal in life.
and that is to travel the world... with only 1$ and Unicycle - Exedous, on 09/12/2009, -0/+13Dugg for using the term aeroplane.
- s0nicfreak, on 09/12/2009, -1/+12Well you don't really NEED to stay in a hotel and constantly buy fancy clothes. If the weather is nice (or you have a blanket/coat) you can just sleep outside, and with a needle and some thread you really only need two outfits (one to wear while you wash the other).
I have traveled all across America and back, starting out with $0, and getting temporary jobs and/or fixing computers along the way, only taking what I could carry... It's really not that hard.
Street performers and beggars actually make quite a bit, and since they're often not paying for shelter, clothes, and the daily luxuries most people spend money on, they have plenty for food. While traveling I would often come across people who would offer me part of their food or to buy me something to eat and refuse to take no for an answer, so... - Bradbitz11, on 09/12/2009, -2/+13Must have AT&T
- frsrblch, on 09/12/2009, -0/+11I have the same problem with "no passing" signs on the road...
- inactive, on 09/12/2009, -1/+12Regardless of what the ***** ARTICLE says, the headline is still misleading (typical for Digg).
- inactive, on 09/12/2009, -1/+12I hear he rode a whale to China.
- tmyprod, on 09/12/2009, -1/+12ILLUSIONS, Michael. Tricks are for whores.
