America years ago a local Peruvian told me it's customary to turn my back to the fountain, sing one-line of my favorite song and toss a sol over your head into the fountain. I figured, why not? & followed suit. Hours later, after strolling by the same fountain I noticed 2 tourists speaking with the same man. I sat on the bench to watch, moments after the toss, and once the tourists leave a 2nd man comes out and collects the money -- & that's the reason why you're not likely to see pennies (or centimos) along the fountain's base :)

- breakintheweb, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3The sad thing about this is, the city has a water pressure shortage. I was there a few months ago and the water trickles out of the shower head. You then go to the water park shown here, and there are a bunch of fountains, some of which shoot 30 feet in the air.
- smallanditalian, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3I had the chance to go there recently on a student exchange. You can play and dance in some of the fountains, and the park is huge. There is creepy techno music that plays all over and some fountains change colors to the beat. There is also a laser show, but it's not much to see. And, unfortunately, the students translated the name to "water park" so we all got excited for rides and whatnot.... it was more of a "park of water" :)

One thing that was cool was the fountains charge foreigners the same price as the locals.
Many places in Peru charge foreigners about 10 times as much money as they do Peruvians.
- morcheeba, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Low water pressure is totally different from a water shortage. Low pressure is easily fixed with a pump - I'm sure that's what they do at the park & everything that doesn't evaporate is recycled. Now Lima is in a desert, but when I lived there, there wasn't a water shortage -- the incan aqueducts still work in some places! Also, our 6-month water bill cost more to mail than to pay.

Most of the water is recycled over and over and over, it's just continuous streams of the same water, and they probably have a little chlorine or treatment center. Like someone said above, there's a difference between a water shortage and water pressure.
