- VeniceCA, on 03/31/2008, -1/+812008: I'm sitting indoors with my computer viewing breathtaking photos of ancient cities. Something is wrong here.
- locamama, on 03/31/2008, -0/+42This is on my list of places to see before I die. It's beautiful.
- bloggirl, on 03/31/2008, -3/+42Fast forward 20 years there'll be a Starbucks there.
- JitMaster, on 03/31/2008, -1/+25If you have wifi, go outside.
- robfarrell, on 11/27/2008, -1/+21Been there twice in 2003 and 2004. First time was great. Second time Montezuma got his revenge.
ALWAYS learn how to say NO ICE when ordering a drink. Your shorts will thank you. - lotsa1s, on 03/31/2008, -2/+11I went there when I was 12 with my mom. We did the 4 day hike on the Inca Trail to get there, and I got to say it was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had.
GO! Doesn't matter if you're 15 or 50, don't miss a chance to go here, it is absolutely stunning. - earlcandlelight, on 03/31/2008, -3/+12Shouldn't it be the "Found" city of the Incas?
- Lanze, on 03/31/2008, -3/+11I found Waldo.
- Bhima, on 03/31/2008, -1/+8they use llamas
- KingGorilla, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7This thing's older than the internets
- Octaman, on 03/31/2008, -0/+6Made with a Fuji FinePix F601 ZOOM... that's what the meta info says.
- dlins, on 03/31/2008, -0/+6Amazing place. I've been there 3 years ago.
Ironic detail: The tree you see in the middle of the bottom right square garden is not a native one.
It was planted by the King of Spain, the country that destroyed the Inca's civilization. - nickylew, on 03/31/2008, -0/+6When I was there a couple of years ago, I took over 30shots of it, and made a panoramic image using autostitch:

Most of the American tourists are the civilized tourists, it's the rednecks back home that are the shifty ones, and are less likely to travel out of state. Tourism helps Peru and other countries. It makes a lot in revenue. There is no reason not to go out and visit these beautiful places. It hurts no one.
- obanite, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5True! We followed the resident herd around for ages. Damn good lawn mowers :D
- lcollado, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5I am flying there Wednesday, Whoo! Hoo!
- Angostura, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5You don't have to fly to it. Sure you have to get to Cuzco somehow, but from there it is bus and train.
If you're determined take a bus from Lima to Cusco. I did that in 1990 and I bet the busses/roads have improved since then. 19 hour journey, you have plenty of time. Overnight in Cuzo and then in Agua Calientes (I wonder if Gringo Bills is still there).
Bus tickets: http://www.go2peru.com/ecs3_ing_a.htm - tugger, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6I'm sat in Lima, looking at pictures of Machu Picchu. How crap is that? I've got another 10 days here, and not enough money to go (you have to fly there). I did manage to spend a weekend at wakama (search digg) and see the nasca lines and the 'candelabra' at paracas which are both pretty cool, but am still gutted about Machu Picchu. There's talk of reducing tourist attendance to it in the next year or two, and this will probably have been my last chance.
- inactive, on 03/31/2008, -5/+9Obviously not lost anymore....
- XristosAnesti, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4You just said something so completely, disgustingly nerdy and outdated that I think I have to digg you up...
- cmccool, on 03/31/2008, -5/+9i'd like to meet the person who tends the greens!
- tomharrow, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5Man, you American's are so worldly.
- Sherman901, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4that is SO badass! i want to get out of michigan and see the world and see stuff like this for myself.
- XristosAnesti, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4What kind of job do you have where crossing your fingers helps you financially?
I only ask because I'm jealous... - XristosAnesti, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3This is unacceptable. A rational argument in response to another rational argument? Digg is dying.
Buried for thinking. - daivos, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4What are the coordinates on Google Earth so I don't have to make any effort to actually see it in person?
- felipe82, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3ALWAYS learn how to say NO ICE when ordering a drink.
"Sin hielo, por favor" - bundwallah, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3I dugg you up since Digg seems to have more people without any sense of humor clicking the thumbs down. Honestly folks, what was offensive about this post?
- XristosAnesti, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4Is this the new Rick Roll? Really? Ridiculous...
[+1 for senseless alliteration?] - 0crabby0, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3Machu Picchu is nice - but I really liked the huge stones at Sacsahuaman above Cusco

It's been a long time (1976?) since I've visited Peru. - csimpkins, on 03/31/2008, -4/+7Probably a cell phone. That quality is terrible!
- DrDragun, on 03/31/2008, -6/+9This looks like a good potential site to go into 15 years of seclusion and train myself to be a master of Kung Fu and other deadly arts, should my family ever be killed in a mugging or home invasion. Bookmarked.
Yes I watched a lot of action movies from the 70s and 80s. - wiiittttt, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2dugg down because i hate you
- kcornwell, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2If you didn't see what really is special about Machu Picchu, follow this link.
http://www.moillusions.com/2006/04/machu-picchu-il ... - luvlysiu, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2sorry to tell u this but ur great-great grandfather was a thief who stole from Machu Picchu. He stole gold and silver relics and sold them. Now because of him some of them are lost and some wound up at the University of Yale. The Peruvian government is trying to get them back to where they belong.
- murmandamos, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2incorrect. you do not have to fly there, i've backpacked peru and visited machu picchu. you can take a bus (albeit a very long bus) for about 10-15 bucks, then you can get to machu picchu by countless routes, ranging from about $30 and up for a guide and boarding (these do not include the sacred valley trail which you must book in advance). you could easily get from lima to machu picchu and back within a week and for under a couple hundred bucks.
- drake77, on 03/31/2008, -2/+4Yeah...but what are you going to do?
- XristosAnesti, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2This is on front page...that means exposure...you should set up a PayPal donation button and ask for help!
- x2cprincess, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3Seriously, mate de coca is NOT "cocaine leaf tea". It is made from the leaves of the coca plant which contains many alkaloids, including the alkaloid that is cocaine. However the percentage of said alkaloid is incredibly low (< 0.5% if I'm not mistaken). Hardly anything hardcore. You're not really forced to drink it either. Not everyone is affected in the same ways by the altitude and if you are adversely affected there are other remedies to facilitate greater oxygen uptake in your blood (which is why people drink coca tea in the first place).
(Don't get me wrong. I'm not knocking the tea. It's really quite yummy!) - SheilaNoya, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2If you do go, then arrange for an early private tour before the tourists all show up and overrun the place. Machu Pichu looks great in photos (usually taken early in the morning), but when you actually get there, it's full of loud tourists. There are private guides who have some kind of deal with the people that run the place - They will let you in 2 hours before the public crowds show up. They also know the history and myths of Machu Picchu so they give you a very informative private tour.
The same is true for Chitzen Itza in Mexico. If you want great photos and a magical tour, then arrange to get in with a private guide a couple of hours before the tour busses arrive. It seems like a totally different place when no one is around.
Ask the locals (preferably at a small hotel) where to find a private guide. You'll be VERY glad you did and you'll actually end up with some photos that don't have a thousand tourists in the background. It also seems magical, mysterious, and powerful to be there when it's empty. Once it's full of tourists, all you can think about is slapping the parents who keeps yelling at their kids, or whining and complaining about everything. - jessetessej, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2the coolest thing about machu picchu and wayna pichu is that if you rotate it counter clockwise, it looks like an old incan face with a beanie on.
btw me and my buddies hid a joint in one of the walls there, so we could come back in 20 years and blaze again. If can you find it...it's yours! - inactive, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2*pat pat* it'll be okay. :(
- andy78, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3I traveled there when i was 15... In order to get there you must first travel to a close by city of Cusco. Cusco is a city that is way above sea level. In order to be there without getting sick you're almost forced to drink a cocaine leaf tea called "Matte de coca".
I traveled from cusco to Machu Picchu by helicopter. Which is an amazing way to go. I've had the chance to visit hundreds of cities and none where as impressive as these ancient ruins. - lotsa1s, on 03/31/2008, -2/+4Are you kidding me? 2 decades from now and they'll be a Starbucks ACROSS from a Starbucks there.
- impedance101, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2a little small to be an entire city; still looks good.
- zantos420, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2except for the ass hat in the red jumpsuit ruining the picture with his mere presence.
- andy78, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2im sure you're right, Im just kinda writing it as I remember it... it was a long time ago...
- yngtimmy, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3Its not lost....its right there. Look, there is even a picture!
