----^------ - MorpheousMarty, on 10/18/2009, -2/+82How else can we test long term exposure to low levels of radiation if not from fools? I really appreciate all these people adding to the science even if they aren't trying.
- nebloof, on 10/18/2009, -3/+76From the article - 400 times more radio-active fallout than Hiroshima
- viparr104, on 10/18/2009, -1/+72Keep low and move sloooowly…we'll be impossible to spot in our ghillie suits laddy
- madamme, on 10/18/2009, -2/+54Please tell me you're kidding.
- ThinkIcouldburn, on 10/18/2009, -2/+52Last I checked, large amounts of radiation = zombies. Sweet.... time to nut up or shut up.
- digg1520, on 10/18/2009, -3/+51Why the ***** do you get dugg down? Highly relevant.
- masonga95, on 10/18/2009, -1/+46I remember reading about some mushrooms that have started growing in the heart of the chernobyl reactor, and survive using radiosynthesis.
- LordXykon, on 10/18/2009, -1/+38Vodka helps against radiation? S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Wins!
- masonga95, on 10/18/2009, -1/+37Apparently you're 31 and from Russia, I think you're lying.

- 15charactername, on 10/18/2009, -1/+28Chernobyl is a city, but the plant was slightly closer to Prypiat. Prypiat was built to house the workers that were working on the plant. The plant wasn't actually in either city though.
- ATH025, on 10/18/2009, -1/+27No I think he's just really stupid.
- homer00, on 10/18/2009, -1/+27Oy! Suzie!

- bluerei, on 10/18/2009, -0/+24Prypyat was the town.
- phylum, on 10/18/2009, -2/+26"For the locals, only mushrooms are considered too poisonous to be edible. Well, maybe one or two in the soup pot is okay." hehe, id give it a try.
- Frixionburne, on 10/18/2009, -0/+23Get over 600 and your broken arm will be fixed.
- omenmedia, on 10/18/2009, -0/+23Best mission ever.
- viv4l4b4m03, on 10/18/2009, -1/+22I wanna go there.
- MrMischief20, on 10/19/2009, -0/+21Remember what I taught you. Keep in mind variable humidity and wind speed along the bullet's flight path. At this distance, you'll also have to take the Coriolis Effect into account.
- MattyDienhoff, on 10/18/2009, -3/+23No, Chernobyl is a city (the one nearest the plant, which is 14 and a half kms away), hence "Chernobyl Power Plant".
- WDM01, on 10/18/2009, -0/+19The USSR was dissolved 18 years ago. You don't need to cover this up anymore.
- stanti, on 10/19/2009, -0/+18our honor
- r0ji, on 10/18/2009, -0/+18Beauuuutiful.
- cha5e, on 10/18/2009, -1/+16Lots more pictures of the region in this article: http://www.kiddofspeed.com/chapter1.html (chapter 3 and beyond have a much higher pics-to-text ratio than chapters 1 and 2).
- MattyDienhoff, on 10/18/2009, -0/+14My guess is, the plant was named after Chernobyl because that was the nearest city *when the plant was being planned*. Remember, Pripyat was founded to house the plant's workers.
- beautifulady, on 10/19/2009, -2/+15Great article, stupid comments.
- theuber1337, on 10/18/2009, -0/+12READ!? THAT UNPOSSIBLE!
- fuzzybeard, on 10/19/2009, -0/+12The first superpower you'd probably get is Super Thyroid Cancer, so good luck with that.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 10/19/2009, -0/+12I have never played the game STALKER and therefore I have a hard time understanding these comments. That is all.
- Rev0lver, on 10/18/2009, -0/+12Such a ***** great game. One of the only games to ever really scare me pissless.
- 15charactername, on 10/18/2009, -0/+11But it was still called the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant as its official name. We aren't just calling it that.
- Bologner, on 10/19/2009, -0/+11The best mission in any FPS to date.
- Asrrin29, on 10/18/2009, -1/+12The old B-rated horror flicks where true, radiation makes things grow bigger!
- haikuFU, on 10/18/2009, -0/+10http://digg.com/d3WFmC
http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/duncan/17611/ - sindex, on 10/18/2009, -2/+12Interesting article. As vivid as some of the descriptions were, I wish there had been some accompanying photos.
- AManWithNoName, on 10/18/2009, -1/+11@mattsull: There's a huge difference between a nuclear explosion, where they can't evacuate the people in time, and Chernobyl's meltdown, which while devastating, they were able to evacuate semi-properly. In terms of death, I'll agree Hiroshima was worse, but the intention in that situation was to kill. However, if we're talking about levels of radiation and damage to the area rather than just the humans there, Chernobyl and Prypiat are easily far worse.
- dstruktNine, on 10/19/2009, -0/+10Cool story, bro.
- MorpheousMarty, on 10/18/2009, -0/+10None of those conditions are the same. These people will be there for decades, the radiation is much higher than Hiroshima, and the core is still there. As far as I can tell the situation is unique. My comment was tongue in cheek, so you can take it easy.
- moliver21, on 10/18/2009, -2/+11I loved the article, but it could have been a lot better, a lot bigger, and show a lot more pictures of what they were talking about.
- JohnnySoftware, on 10/18/2009, -1/+10We already know about the long term effects of radiation exposure from:
- mentally retarded children being fed radioactive cereal in a US scientific study
- Cherobyl and other nuclear power accidents
- military nuclear accidents
- dumping incidents
- radiation therapy machines defects resulting in dosage accidents in 1980's and recently
- Hiroshima, Nagasaki, etc.
- US servicemen and others sent as observers during the nuclear test detonations performed in the US deserts
Enough data exists. You do not have to feel grateful anymore. Just go right to facepalm without any guilt at all that you might possibly benefit from this error. -
