- Andy.D, on 03/26/2008, -3/+61There are simply too many flights. Air Marshalls were never about anything other than making people feel safe anyway.
- plkadotsmandy, on 03/26/2008, -9/+66Fantastic, why don't we broadcast it globally.
- Ranvier, on 03/26/2008, -1/+40I never felt unsafe after 9/11.
I never felt unsafe after 9/11.
I never felt much more safe with the thought of Air Marshals on board.
I don't less safe now.
Why would anyone want to live their life in fear? - jowep55, on 03/26/2008, -2/+31Waste of money for airmarshalls onboard. As long as the cockpit door is sealed.
Kudos too CNN though, for at least heaving a story and less "Man marries a llama" weird ass *****. - newznozzl, on 03/26/2008, -2/+21Salary of Air Marshal ranges from 35,100 - 80,800 a year (call it 57,000 a year, WAG it at $156 a day).
27,000 flights a day * 156 = 4,212,000a day to do this.
For the entire year, that's around 1.5 BILLION dollars.
I get it, that it's a drop in the bucket compared to a lot of things (600 Billion for all us miliary?)... but saying we can afford 1.5 billion a year just to have a cop on every plane is stretching it a bit, I would think, considering the total times they would have been needed. I would think the money would be spent better elsewhere (intel, solid doors on cockpits (which they've done), better security at airports (working on it, not all there yet), maybe just training pilots and arming them.. even though with that pilot that managed to discharge his weapon, I'm not sure of... :)
And I'd point out that having one guy with a gun on the plane when a bunch of guys takes it over isn't going to mean that it really changes anything, assuming they've been able to arm themselves in some way. I'd more rely on the passengers realizing their about to all die and to zerging the terrorist... - inactive, on 03/26/2008, -1/+18BUT OMG WHO WILL PROTECT US FROM THE TERRORISTS???
Idiots... - ZMann, on 03/26/2008, -1/+17Did anyone expect that it would be much more than 1 percent?
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -1/+17Strangely, I still feel as safe as I did 10 minutes ago....or 10 years ago. I'm more worried about the pilots staying sober than I'm worried about an in-air incident.
- ThePeteStanis, on 03/26/2008, -3/+18You sound like a bitch.
- sq2shooter, on 03/26/2008, -0/+14It would never happen. In that situation the pilots would never open the door under any circumstance.
- kgsullivan, on 03/26/2008, -1/+14Thankfully the nicknames I gave my fists are "air" and "marshal", so we should be okay.
- fkr3, on 03/26/2008, -0/+12I don't think anyone would be surprised that the federal air marshals aren't employing a fricking army. Every one of them probably costs 50,000 in training and then a salary, and you guys are broke remember?
- edwartica, on 03/26/2008, -2/+14Wait, why should tax payers pay for this! It should be part of the airfare. Those of us who do not fly should not have to pay for those who do. I'm sorry, but flying is a luxury, and I don't feel the need to subsidize it. Especially considering its so environmentally irresponsible.
- vinnyvenus, on 03/26/2008, -0/+12That's what she said.
- newznozzl, on 03/26/2008, -4/+15Salary of Air Marshal ranges from 35,100 - 80,800 a year (call it 57,000 a year, WAG it at $156 a day).

For the entire year, that's around 1.5 BILLION dollars. - offspring06, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10Some people are just scared of *****. I don't care myself. I'm not afraid of death.
- barnis, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10that whole concept is so ridiculous anyway...
building new bridges, or hospitals, or late-night buses for drunks, or universal medical care, or product safety standards or one of 1,000,000s of other easier and cheaper government regulations would save far more lives than paying police men to ride around America on every plane.
you can start here:
http://www.nsc.org/lrs/statinfo/odds.htm - barnis, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8I'm more afraid of McDonalds and riding in a car than I am on ANY airplane
- Mahoney07, on 03/26/2008, -3/+11Giving people jobs is NOT an arguement for spending money.
- DiggzDE, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8Still higher then the percent of flights that are actually hijacked by Terrorists
- GettinReal, on 03/26/2008, -1/+9Just what we need. Invisible good guys to protect us from the invisible bad guys.
- tont0r, on 03/26/2008, -4/+12yeah because bush has everything to do with the number of air marshalls. if they did have an air marshall on every single flight, you would be crying about how much the government wastes money on pointless *****. i hate bush as much as the next person, but jesus christ, you people cant wait to blame everything on him. its like anything that has gone bad is obviously his fault.
i saw someone almost trip and fall on the sidewalk the other day. if only my state had more funding to fix sidewalks. bush ***** us again!
/queue random quote about blaming something else on bush. - Ajajadude, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7I think they should tell you when you buy your plane ticket and during the boarding process.
- Hobbes24, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8it's really not that big of a deal...just have stronger, possibly bullet proof doors to the pilots, and if you really must, give the pilots guns
- amnesiac096, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8you also lived through your trip, so this doesn't even matter in your "situation."
- Jonsey, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7I would depressurize the cabin and wear and oxygen mask until everyone (including the hijackers pass out) and hope for minimal causalities, but I'm not going to open that door.
- SpectreFire, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8Yeah, but can't the pilots do some wild ass maneuvering and knock the terrorists to the ground while an onslaught of people pile on top of them?
- smith41, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8Pass out sidearms at the check-in counter....
"Hello Mr. ___, would you care to upgrade to first class and receive a complementary .357 Magnum upgrade?" - mlostracco, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6Do the screeners point at your biceps and say, "I'm sorry, sir, we don't allow guns on the plane"?
- calibration, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7All passengers dying > plane crashing into a building and killing many times that number.
- Typhoon2009, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7Christ no. I can sort of see where you're coming from but please, no. Someone irate businessman would have had the last straw sitting next to an overweight passenger, then he'd pull out his provided gun and everyone would think he's a terrorist and then the flight would be like a real-life version of CoD4's "Mile High Club" mission.
- SwedishNinja, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6It would be a logistical nightmare. Sure, you'd think that having one on every flight would make sense, but then what do they do when they reach their destination? There won't always be a proportionate amount of flights, meaning Marshals would be sitting around on the tarmac, wasting money.
- defubar, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6You guys watch too many movies.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7Only by having air marshals can we send terrorists back to the 5th dimension where they belong.
- lilSears, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7I liked it when a private company screened airports. They did a better job back then and were a heck of a lot faster. I may sound crazy but there's no need for air marshalls if there's ppl with concealed licenses that have to check with the screeners and show their license before getting on the plane.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6I like to live in a word where stuff like this leaks because it means the bad stuff is more likely to leak as well.
- gibler, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5yes.. but think of all the Air Points.
- S7aind, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5With locked cockpits (and pilots holding weapons) and passengers who know what they are attempting to do, we don't need a federal air marshal on every flight. Plus, it's just one person
- mlostracco, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5I hope all y'all worried that your flight may not have an air marshal are buying lottery tickets, because your chances of becoming a hundred-billionaire are drastically higher than an air marshal ever being required to act on your aircraft.
Way worse things to worry about that are significantly more dangerous. Statistically, the presence of air marshals is entirely insignificant. - scott1, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5protecting 1% of planes when your chances of dying from a terrorist attack are 0.0000008%.
No need to be afraid a terrorist attack when your board a plane. - supermanred, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5I still don't get why US citizens WANT armed troops everywhere. What ever happened to live free or die? It's pathetic to see how the US has been turned into a nation of people scared of their own shadows willing to have all their freedom taken away by a monkey in the White House who ***** on the constitution and everything the US once stood for on a daily basis.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Just to clarify, I'm calling idiots all those people who are whining like that in this comment section.
- DyDx, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5And I'm more afraid of our country turning fascist than I am of terrorists or fundamentalist Islam.
- Skooma714, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Nothing new with that.
Protect yourself and others, don't rely on the government. Hell, if anyone is going to kill you it's them. - roberto_deneero, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6Even the flights with Air Marshals on board are 100% unsafe. Once a bomb is on board, aint no half witted government employee gonna do ***** about it. KA-BLAMMMO!!!!!!!!!
- capiCrimm, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6they even get a couple hundred dollars for food and stuff while they're waiting for their return flight. It's a relatively luxurious job.
- Ranvier, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Wow, my comment is ***** up!
Surprised I'm getting dugg. - strictnein, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5Because when baddie #1 pops up and Air Marshall goes after him, baddie #2 stabs him in the neck.
- barnis, on 03/26/2008, -2/+6why don't we just make everyone an air marshal that way unemployment would be ZERO, we all get paid to fly where we want, and can have all the guns we need...just don't let people with "funny names" or "things on their head" sign up
/sarcasm - Alegoo92, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5"I am just wondering if the whiteh ouse is looking to raise their rating by letting another terrorist attack happen to USA via the planes"
You really need to get a life. -
