Las Vegas Now: Carrot Top - kara1234, on 12/12/2007, -1/+23Damn, they need to move towards a AJAX style silde-show. All that HTML reloading for each image makes it unnecessarily time consuming to step through those images.
- rpong1981, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6I was looking forwarded to an aerial view :(
- pasher1221, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6It was painful
- Calculon, on 12/12/2007, -7/+12Vegas then: a slight touch of class.
Vegas now: a crimed-up meth hole. - tymme, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4Bah, that could be anywhere. WoW boxes come to mind quicker than Vegas does.
- bcorder, on 12/12/2007, -1/+5I just got back. I spend about 45 days a year in Las Vegas. Other than a few shows and an occasional slot machine or hand of blackjack, you can keep it. If you're there more than a 3 day drunken party you see the city for what it is. Avarice, greed, gluttony and more. The photo story does nothing to demonstrate the level of construction going on. I counted over 18 cranes on the strip when I was there and I'm sure I've missed a few. The sheer size of what's already there and whats being built is overwhelming.
- sissipher, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4I live here and moved from Michigan. I can tell you this, you either Love Vegas or you Hate it. There is no in between. Personaly, I love it. I have employment at 1.4% with good wages. Plus, I can see the snow on the snowcapped mountains all around while I drive through palm trees. No more ice storms or worring about if I will have a job the next day.
- brimg87, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3The pictures are a bit lacking. There are much better pictures than that. No skyline shot?
- Salival, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Then: Desert
Now: Lots of Money, Water and Hotels
Later: Foreclosures, no water, lots of debt! - Mitchum, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4The article said "for over one hour" not 5. It was stopped due to 55mph winds, maybe that's what threw you off.
- URnotheonly1, on 12/12/2007, -2/+4Love that town. No mater how dirty it gets, that's freedom baby!
- GlitchEnzo, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2I just moved to Vegas from Wisconsin, and I couldn't agree more. The mountains are gorgeous and after hearing about the ice storms that hit the Midwest on Monday, I'm so thankful I live here. I definitely prefer it to Chicago. They keep the place clean (I was surprised to see they actually remove graffiti) and they keep their roads well maintained. Oh yeah and no toll ways is a huge plus.
I AM a little worried about Lake Mead's water level dropping though. - kreneskyp, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1It has nothing to do with the quality of the performer but rather the manner of them. celine dion fits the bill but elton john and his bright pink suits etc do not. your "classy" performer is coming on stage in a 3 piece suit. That class was from a different era when wearing a suit out was considered a normal thing. Now you're more likely to see people in tshirts and beat up jeans than anything else.
- valosonthor, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1The mafia element is almost completely removed from Las Vegas, now replaced by corporations and their financial interests. The corps first made inroads with Howard Hughes and his casinos in the early 60s, but mostly took over in the 80s. And as much as casinos are disliked, they don't do anything illegal; why risk losing your gaming license and the associated multi-million dollar profits, when you can make a metric sh*t-ton just playing it straight? And as mentioned above, Vegas is very much a "love it or leave it" town. I love the town, but I'm a young, single man who works as a poker dealer; a lot of others can't stand the thought of it.
- brimg87, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1I'm actually moving to Vegas from Michigan when I finish up my college in a couple years. Can't wait to get out there. I've been twice and I love it.
- antdude, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1And hot too.
- mal1964, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Kevin, can you please tell us a story about Las Vegas PLEASE!!!
- Nyaos, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2I doubt the heat is the most you'll worry about 900 feet up.
- pltpassportsinc, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1i agree.. !!! :-) check our our site.. www.platinumpassportsinc.com
- JJ2K1, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Well like the Lake Mead story that was on the front page of Digg yesterday, when the water goes, so does Vegas, and this will be within the next decade. I don't know of anyone that will be paying an arm and a leg for a gallon of water when they start trying to pump it in from northern Nevada.
- kreneskyp, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1im sure theres still some involvement but i bet most of the mafia/mobsters were replaced by white collar "criminals". not committing crimes so much as just being hooked into politicians and other friends who are equally as rich. Don't need to be a "mobster" when the law is on your side.
- mal1964, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1I moved there from Minnesota in the late 90's for three years and loved it also just me and my girlfriend .But to start a family it would be one of the last place I'd live.
- enemyofstate430, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Much better pic here: amazing that all this stuff is all pretty much 15 years old or less...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Las_Vegas_Strip ... - Calculon, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, and they kept it clean and kept the trouble (except for themselves) out!
- stillasleep00, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1What part of town do you live in? I can't even drive in North Las Vegas...
- chokingshadow, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Vegas is getting crazy with the all the luxury resorts going in. Almost gone are the days of comps, free rooms and cheap buffets. I feel sorry for the low rollers :) This site lists all the new hotels that have gone in lately: http://www.lasvegasrater.com/las-vegas-hotels
- pltpassportsinc, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1disagree.. !!!!! meth is every where.. but its about who u hang with... i guess its safe to say u dont know vegas at all... !!!

- Grossmont, on 12/14/2007, -1/+1Here are some good pictures of "Early Vegas"
http://www.earlyvegas.com/main_page.html - jwarrent, on 12/12/2007, -1/+1Well said. As soon as I can I'm out and never looking back. Lifeless, boring place to live.
- brianbb98, on 12/12/2007, -4/+4Just one comment.

- pltpassportsinc, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0well put.. i agree and more.. lots of night clubs.. and hella fun..
- enemyofstate430, on 12/12/2007, -2/+1I live in Vegas and I can assure you that Carrot Top is hardly the main attraction.
If I said Vegas now I'd say: Celine Dion, Elton John, Jerry Seinfeld, and about a million more things that I could go off on, including all of our golf resorts, malls, etc.
Why does everyone think Vegas has gone down hill since the times of Sinatra and Wayne Newton? - mal1964, on 12/12/2007, -3/+1Want to see the real Vegas, Take the 301 bus from the top of the strip to downtown that's as real as it gets. I use to do it five days a week.
- mal1964, on 12/12/2007, -3/+1The naked city is a must see, you will never forget it?
- cherdakerka, on 12/12/2007, -2/+0Impressive
- metsrule3186, on 12/12/2007, -3/+1didnt it use to be run by the mob?
- chowderdick, on 12/12/2007, -3/+1But... THERE'S NO WATER...
- stillasleep00, on 12/12/2007, -5/+2Vegas is a desert both literally and culturally. The definition of a *****. I can't wait to get out of here.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -6/+2Never been there, never cared to. Too much crap.
A fool and his money are soon parted should be the city slogan.

What is Digg?
