- winguero, on 07/20/2009, -0/+45This is the greatest thing I've heard come out of Vegas since they started giving out drinks for free to gamblers...
- mr_ziy, on 07/21/2009, -4/+43This is a great idea. California should also implement this, the amount of water wasted for lawns is ridiculous.
- ctabone, on 07/21/2009, -1/+24Las Vegas resident here -
One of my close friends was able to net about $1200 from removing his lawn last year. You need to contact the water management department and they'll come out to your residence both before and after. If they're satisfied with your removal of the old grass lawn you'll be mailed a [quite generous] check which often times pays for the entire process with some cash left on the side.
With the heat in this city (about 110 Fahrenheit today), many of these older grass lawns need to be "over-irrigated" at night to help prevent the evaporation of water. Even with extensive sprinkler systems you'll still see many yards suffer because of the lower humidity / high heat air sucking the moisture up right away. Switching to desert plants makes alot more sense both for practical and financial reasons. - Velnich, on 07/21/2009, -1/+17This almost makes too much sense. A sort of "why not sooner". Don't fight nature in an attempt to make your property more aesthetically pleasing. Find a way to work with it. A green grassed yard should never have made sense in a desert environment.
- elliotys, on 07/21/2009, -0/+16It's gonna suck passing-out in gravel.
- yocouchdigga, on 07/21/2009, -0/+13Arizona needs to do this too.
- socialpyramid, on 07/20/2009, -1/+14down with lawns!
- MWeather, on 07/21/2009, -1/+14I'll get rid of my lawn when you drain the fountains and get rid of the golf courses.
- bixby1, on 07/20/2009, -0/+13I smell Brady Bunch backyards...
- hbyrne, on 07/20/2009, -0/+12Sounds like the sand traps on Vegas golf courses are going to be expanding soon.
- Y0tsuya, on 07/21/2009, -0/+10Yeah stick it to the HOAs.
- mine4321, on 07/21/2009, -0/+10We need to do this in the Midwest too... because I hate mowing and it would really screw with the moles.
- deweyhewson, on 07/21/2009, -0/+10People choose to live in a ***** desert and then want to live like its Seattle. Which means that, since they don't have the water, they steal it from their neighbors, like farmers and other states.
So it's about bloody time movements like this started to take place. - CleoQKazoo, on 07/21/2009, -0/+7I never understood what was wrong with trimmed weeds. I mean, they may not be uniform but theyre green and I like dandilions
- deweyhewson, on 07/21/2009, -0/+6Welcome to America, you must be new here.
- sdelmege, on 07/21/2009, -0/+6I lived in Utah for a while. The idiots there waste a ton of water on grass by hwy on-ramps and medians. pretty stupid.
- DiggCommando, on 07/21/2009, -0/+6Just price water adequately; there is no need for these convoluted incentives which are so often gamed.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -1/+7Or it turns into a brown piece of ***** plant graveyard
- wrand, on 07/21/2009, -0/+5I've never watered my lawn and the stuff still grows like crazy!
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+5Australia has been pushing this for a while. Using dryland plants, rainwater harvesting or gray water from the shower you can have a really good looking garden that needs hardly any maintenance. Its nice to not have to mow the lawns every 2 weeks.
It boosts populations of beneficial bugs and birds can get a feed. - Devine122, on 07/21/2009, -0/+4The best thing to do is just not water your lawn. The grass doesn't die, it just goes into a dormant phase. That way you don't have to cut it either.
- jumpman915, on 07/21/2009, -0/+4amen to that. We have a similar program here in west Texas and those who still have lawns are only permitted to water 3 days a week which is fine by me, however, the parts of town where the rich live and the golf courses/country clubs are permitted to run their sprinkler systems 7 days a week!
- marcb83, on 07/21/2009, -0/+4they have really good looking fake grass now you can get which you don't need to mow or water.
- homercles337, on 07/21/2009, -1/+5I grew up in Reno and while we flush twice (its a long way to Vegas) people never could realize that we lived in a desert. They wanted their lawns and all the water in the world to grow them. Idiocy.
- darklights, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3@ngres - I believe you mean 'west' of the Mississippi
- SScottAZ, on 07/21/2009, -2/+5How about not moving from the northeast down here to the southwest.
There is no more water. It's hot and dusty, you won't like it. Stay home. - ericthesalmon, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3Sequestering maybe 800 pounds of carbon in no way makes that water use worthwhile.
- york2600, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3You obviously don't live in California where there's no water right now
- NatetheGrate, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3They're in the freakin' desert -- what do they need lawns for?
- deweyhewson, on 07/21/2009, -1/+4I live in Utah and agree it's stupid. However, Utah still has far more water than Vegas does.
Neither one is smart, but Vegas is downright moronic. - ericthesalmon, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3A good point, but your geography is a little weak.
- Vector713, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3As a Las Vegas resident and a Landscape Architecture student, I'm happy to see my city pushing for turf reduction. The university campus here has also torn up and replaced grass in areas that aren't for public use. Not only does it make more sense for economic and environmental reasons, but desert landscapes look a hell of a lot more interesting than just a plain grass.
My 2 cents :) - darkcthulhu, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2That statement is true for some types of grass in some parts of the country.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -4/+6Sadly, the xeriscape trend has caused cactus poaching in surrounding deserts to *explode*- barrel and saguaro populations that took hundreds of years to establish are being wiped out in hours. Some species are even being driven towards extinction.
- iletumi, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3Well they aren't killing them, just replanting in another location. I'm sure some die due to the stress but they are in it for the money. Why would they kill the plant they are using?
A bit over dramatic about cactus there i think, not that i think poaching is ok to do. Dirty Jobs even had an episode where they showed the method used to do this, legally of course. - inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2Doh! You're right
- dianebl, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2Dirty Jobs also mentioned that if the cactus is damaged during moving, they can't sell it. I doubt they bother replanting it, in that case.
- Nysul, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2I agree, we have water restrictions where I am living in CA but NO ONE has desert landscaping.
- Visual77, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2I ***** wish we still had a water park here in Las Vegas. I miss Wet n Wild.
- ohthedaysofyore, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2Uhm, they do. At least where I live.
- darkism, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2Who would WANT a lawn in the desert? Too much maintenance and grass is ugly. Give me a bunch of sand and cacti any day of the week.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2How so? (I honestly would like to know)
- Loki101, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2I'd just have a beer party and get everyone to piss on the lawn. That'll kill it.
- vanguardanon, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1I wish my area would do this. Too bad I live in NC where grass is supposed to be green.
- esc27, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Grass in landscaping has been way over done, especially for businesses. The pictures in the article looked much better once the grass was replaced.
- megaton, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Guess which U.S. city is going to be like Detroit in 50 years?
- Harboggles, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1that there is a free market incentive.
- akatsuki, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1They should just raise the price of water to market and ban yard maintenance restrictions by housing associations that are non-native.
- passedoutghost, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Astro turf is awesome!. Not so good for your skin when you fall over though.
- chiefbandit2200, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1They grow so much faster than grass, so you have to mow more often.
/has a weedy yard =/ -
