- inactive, on 09/26/2009, -1/+30It at least makes sense for once, La Jolla is gorgeous and California is very pricey to so together is rather sick. Beautiful beaches though, simply amazing.
- MarkMontoya, on 09/26/2009, -0/+20At those prices, I think I could afford a tile's worth of space.
- stephhicks68, on 09/26/2009, -1/+18What's even more amazing is that there are still people paying these prices for real estate! Wow.
- casspa, on 09/26/2009, -6/+21I'd rather live on a beach in a Central American country for 1/100th of that price, and invest the rest of the money in my family's future.
- smacksaw, on 09/27/2009, -1/+16It was only a matter of time until La Jolla took the crown. If it were me, I'd rather live in Del Mar. A bit more eclectic, still exclusive, yet no cliffs to deal with on your way to surf.
- primatage, on 09/26/2009, -18/+33And everyone who lives there is a pompous douche... Just sayin.
- Hedison, on 09/27/2009, -1/+13I have been to La jolla and must say it was pretty amazing. Personally I couldn't live there but makes an ideal holiday location
It is no surprise to me that real estate there is so expensive. It's pretty ideallic - anotherjack, on 09/27/2009, -2/+10One of the notable things about the great depression was that the remainder of the wealthy society retreated into their most wealthy communities to ride it out. In that economy, a billionaire probably couldn't live next door to regular folk. The contrast would be too much for everyone. How could you hold a swank upper class dinner party, when people just outside your fence have no money for food or shelter and no jobs and no prospects? It's emotionally easier to be surrounded by millionaires, who don't cause you to feel crappy when you spend lavishly.
- Surferess, on 09/27/2009, -0/+8La Jolla is quite stunning and the beaches there are beautiful. Yes, some newly rich are douche bags, but for the most part there is a great deal of old money in LJ and it is fairly classy. For example, it is an unwritten rule that "You don't honk in La Jolla."
- chocoBOO, on 09/27/2009, -1/+9Or is a poor college student that goes to UCSD...Just sayin.
- Idonteven, on 09/27/2009, -0/+7Are you looking for roommates?
- IAmSam14, on 09/27/2009, -2/+9By invest the money in my family's future you mean kidnapping insurance right?
- AngelBunny, on 09/27/2009, -0/+6Why would they retreat? In a depression some people have a harder time. The wealthy often can easily take advantage in that and invest. It takes money to make money, after all.
La Jolla isn't a place where people buy properly to live. It is a place where someone with to much money buys the place and rents it out for the rest of their life. It is an investment. There are rarely rich people living in areas like that. They just own it. It is only the wealthy slightly above higher-middle class that lives in areas like that. - kevlar21, on 09/27/2009, -3/+9Some future they'd have in a poor-ass little country in Central America.
- mrjit, on 09/27/2009, -0/+5Most of us do that after college, anyway. You can make friends anywhere.
- AngelBunny, on 09/27/2009, -0/+4I grew up in that area.. *shrugs* it is nothing but a bunch of beach houses anyways. Personally, I like the generalized Sausalito area much better.
- MothBoy, on 09/27/2009, -0/+4FYI to anyone visiting La Jolla.
The following picture is from the California Coastal Project and shows a house to the north (on the left) that I think is even more over the top than the Razor house mentioned in the article.
You can notice two other things in the picture:
1) My old dorm is that ugly gray monolith with the million dollar views of the coast and down into these ritzy estates,
2) To the south (right) you see a large open area. That is public open space owned by the University, and is a great place to go for a walk, watch the paragliders, enjoy unsurpassed views up and down the coast and access Blacks Beach. Most people don't seem to know it exists, because it is rarely crowded.

- mkellogg999, on 09/28/2009, -0/+4If you had the money, buying a house in La Jolla *would be* investing the money in your family's future.
- zeth006, on 09/27/2009, -0/+3Typical. When I lived in that area some years back, a single room was $800.
- richirwin, on 09/27/2009, -1/+4I finally found where I belong.
- inactive, on 09/27/2009, -1/+4idyllic
- AngelBunny, on 09/27/2009, -3/+5What about friends? Would you really want to leave everyone you know behind?
- MothBoy, on 09/27/2009, -0/+2Here is a view of the Razor house mentioned in the article, taken as part of the California Coastal Project:
http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.c ...
Note all of the dorm rooms looming behind the estates! Good memories of walks past the Razor house and other ridiculous estates to get to the bluffs. - mbraynard, on 09/27/2009, -0/+2location location location
- Sup3rSh3ep, on 09/27/2009, -0/+2i live in la jolla, only because they decided to make ucsd here, instead of sd or pb or ob. thanks for ***** us over ucsd.
- smacksaw, on 09/27/2009, -0/+2You're probably right, because all of that stuff east of I-5 probably drags everything down a bit, while the "low income" stuff in the Golden Triangle wouldn't qualify since it's mainly rental properties.
- jrm125, on 09/27/2009, -0/+2Great spot for photos. Drive up from Pacific Beach pretty frequently to hang out for the view. Often some decent car shows too.
- enoteware, on 09/27/2009, -0/+2I second that!
- immatellyouwhat, on 09/27/2009, -1/+3Actually the first rule about La Jolla is you don't talk about La Jolla....do I really have to to tell you the second rule?
- pinchduck, on 09/28/2009, -0/+2Grayling is a very nice little town. It has more than it's fair share of problems right now, but it is a fantastic place for fishing, cross country skiing, biking, hiking, snowmobiling, and boating. Hoist a few at Spike's for me, I'll be coming through again in a few weeks.
- MothBoy, on 09/27/2009, -0/+2I'll bet that Del Mar is actually higher, but probably doesn't meet their criteria in some way (maybe too small). The physical city of Del Mar is very small, and its border is quite a ways west of I5.
La jolla is not a city in any case, it is just a piece of San Diego. - immatellyouwhat, on 09/27/2009, -1/+3Yeah share the wealth, look one of us will put our left foot in, and then take it out; and then some one else puts their right foot in and shake it all about.
- MothBoy, on 09/27/2009, -0/+2Tell me how that job market is working out for you in Central America.
Sure you can live cheaply, but where are you going to get the money for your family's future? - aseideman, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1I always knew i went I went to high school in Disneyland...
- Kettek, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1Haha, that link is great.
I just found a navy base with a dozen giant hovercraft;
http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.c ... - chrispompa, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1What happen to all of Iron Mans nice cars?! I saw some tractors and vesbas !
- Hedison, on 09/27/2009, -1/+2Oops silly me.
Must be all that fresh air - DrNemo, on 09/27/2009, -0/+1When you look at the interiors the price seems justified.
- MothBoy, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1I thought the owner was in grocery stores. Did he sell it?
That was the house where Michael Jackson hid out before his trial.
PS: Let me know when you sneak into the pool, so I can make sure someone pictures whatever it is that they would do to you. Probably something out of James Bond, like releasing the sharks into the pool! - mgbuddy, on 09/27/2009, -1/+2No, it's the exact opposite. It's spelled "La Joya", whatever you pronounce it. If a mexican kid write it with LL on an exam, is taked as wrong.
Also, 2 L's are not Y. It's a different sound, but it's similar. The "defect" of saying Y instead of "LL" even have a name (Yeismo) and for a spanish (Spain) speaker, it's wrong.
But it's not a defect in most of Latin America, it's accepted because almost all speakers there do it for history reasons. - MothBoy, on 09/27/2009, -0/+1Dude, get a map, learn some history and figure out what other coastal parcel the size of UCSD was available in the 60's. Certainly nothing in PB or OB, and nothing else worthwhile in the rest of coastal SD.
UCSD was an old WWII marine training base, or else it would have been developed earlier. Luckily, it was available at the right time. - MothBoy, on 09/27/2009, -0/+1No, he got it right. He was referring to idyllic and idealist UCSD, which looms large above some of the most expensive property in the world.
It was amusing to be a student in the dorms, paying a couple hundred a month, and looking down from my 11 story dorm building into the yards of the estates mentioned in this story, and to walk through their streets to Blacks Beach and walk along the huge stretch of coastal bluffs in their neighborhood that is public open space owned by the university and is not for sale at any price. - Shipyaad, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1Ah, Tioga Hall. Memories...
- enzomedici, on 09/29/2009, -0/+1$2 Million for 2,200 sq / ft. Lol....that's a lot of money for a little ass house. La Jolla is nice, but not that nice. The beaches in California are great for surfing, but suck overall. The water is cold and full of seaweed and the sand sucks ass. I would rather live in Newport Coast than La Jolla though. The OC rocks.
- AngelBunny, on 09/29/2009, -0/+1rich? No. People do not generally have personal security guards there. It isn't _that_ rich.
I grew up very close to that (father's house. he was vice pres of sony in marketing at the time) and in Granite Bay (mother's houses) and I can tell you that where I currently live is FAR richer than both of those places. If you look in my profile the city I have listed living in is a lie and for a good reason. Here is a clue where I live: It is rated the richest place in the USA currently. You should easily be able to figure it out using wikipedia. - MothBoy, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1If you like that, check out this one:
http://www.californiacoastline.org/streisand/lawsu ... - ninerskeet, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1It's called "The Jewel" for a reason then.
- digitalArtform, on 09/28/2009, -0/+1I think Ken Rockwell lives there.
