- jasdf, on 06/24/2009, -0/+74Beautiful country, it is too bad it is being run by a madman.
- damien1989, on 06/24/2009, -0/+51I found this very Interesting:
"I took this photo at the exact moment that one of our tour members was explaining to our tour guide about the new leader of North Korea. They receive so little information inside the country that tourists are often a more accurate source of information." - AdrianBye, on 06/25/2009, -0/+45Hey digg, i'm really flattered my pics made it to the front page, thanks a lot!
To answer some questions I've recevied:
1. The tour was with Koryo tours: http://www.koryogroup.com/
2. The food inside north korea wasn't very good
3. Its no problem to take in a camera as long as your zoom lens is under 150mm. I also brought my macbook air and kindle. The airport security recognized the macbook air and said "apple"!
4. You are allowed to take photos inside north korea, provided you follow the rules. I did most of the time, except for the military photo because I thought it was important to show at least some of the reality.
5. Foreign languages in north korea are a problem, they only speak Korean. Our guides spoke english
6. The "dear leader" suit cost about US$100 and was custom made. For Koreans its a standard outfit, we selected it because it is the style their leader typically wears. For outsiders the photo of me beside the guard looks unusual; for North Koreans it looks normal as quite a few people are dressed this way inside the country.
7. To the guy that said its all fake? LOL.. I have 2000 photos here + some video, if you want me to post something else let me know
Any other questions, I'll be happy to answer..
Adrian - decker12, on 06/24/2009, -2/+42I find North Korea to be endlessly fascinating, mostly because it's such an alien place.
- JCEEZ, on 06/25/2009, -1/+29Korean chicks are hot.
- jwolcott, on 06/24/2009, -0/+28"In hindsight this was a dangerous photo to take. We saw lots of North Korean military units throughout our tour and were not permitted to take photos of them (including this one, which I took to give you this perspective)."
One of the soldiers is looking straight at him in that pic. I would have shat kids. - NightC, on 06/24/2009, -0/+26Nice pictures, keep in mind this is only the capital. Most of the country doesn't even have electricity and many millions go to bed hungry.
- cjh24, on 06/24/2009, -1/+27I love the custom-made real "Korean President" outfit. I lol'd and lol'd.
- maxvette, on 06/24/2009, -0/+26These monuments are designed to humble and impress,
I'll be honest, I'm both humbled by them and impressed, they are very beautiful.
Too bad its just a thin veneer on top of the garbage underneath - jman583, on 06/24/2009, -0/+19The Vice Guide to Travel on North Korea is also good:

http://www.vbs.tv/watch/the-vice-guide-to-travel/g ... - digggggggggg, on 06/24/2009, -2/+18Even though the tours the North Koreans give foreigners only show a thin veneer of the country, these pictures bring out a more human side to a completely opaque and secretive country. Sometimes it's hard to imagine that there are actually people living in the ***** crazy "North Korea" that we hear about so much in the news.
It's a good reminder of why the rest of the world hasn't wiped North Korea off the face of the earth - average people, like those shown in the pictures, will be the ones who suffer the most, while the leaders in the regime will probably end up in a cush cell in the hague. - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+15Fantastic photos, I've never seen such a wide selections of photos of North Korea that are so personal. It's easy to forget when talking about the DPRK that people get married, have kids, who then go to school and then get jobs and get married themselves. For example, look at the wellies the children are wearing on their trip to the theatre. I bet most Diggers used to own boots like that, or their children now do.
- DirtPile, on 06/24/2009, -1/+16"a ronery madman."
FTFY - Jeepinator, on 06/24/2009, -0/+14Who noticed all the cameras on the US side of the DMZ?
Oh yeah, Dugg for being on one page. - p51d007, on 06/25/2009, -0/+10Glad someone picked up on that. Just google Korea at night. The ONLY night time lights you see is just a small flicker from the NK capital. The rest of the country lives in the stone age.
The only people in North Korea that "are rich" are those in the North Korean capital, those in the government, and those that work for the government. The rest of the country lives in poverty.
Too bad they didn't allow him to take pictures outside the capital, or of the labor camps. - Teh_Shiz, on 06/25/2009, -0/+8When I had first read it, I mistook it for N. Korea getting a new president.
- DirtyVicar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7If they're just young soldiers I doubt one kid is going to stick his neck out and makes waves with a Western tour group, especially if he hasn't been briefed on tour group rules.
- digggggggggg, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6According to another photoblog from some time ago, the North Koreans don't make you abide by a dress code when you visit the DMZ - so you can go in shorts and flip flops if you want to. On the other hand, I hear that if you visit from South Korea, you need to wear pants and shoes. I found that kinda interesting.
- RobertWright, on 08/13/2009, -0/+5Great photos. I understand this is not a balanced look, but the part they allowed photos are Beautiful. The Hotel bed is not so cool........................
- schmidtyboyas, on 06/24/2009, -2/+7Fascinating pictures of a country that few really get an insider's view of.
On a side note... I'm sorry but the guy that took these pictures is very amusing looking, in a Droopy the dog kind of way - hanglerfig, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Makes me a little sad. The kids there look as joyous and curious as anywhere else, and their crazy bastard leaders will kill them all to make a point.
- sentinel106, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Honestly, seeing this makes me think that LucasArts/Pandemic Studios painted a pretty accurate picture of Pyongyang when they did Mercenaries.
- ace429k, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5some of those pictures are of beautiful places and people. That groom sure did marry a nice looking woman.
- booyahbitch, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4I totally agree! He could have been standing on Jupiter in those photos and it wouldn't have been any more alien!!!
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -2/+6It's a corrupt Communist country... is that not expected?
- decker12, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5This series was fantastic. I only wish it was an hour longer.
It was heart wrenching to see the tea girl in that remote piece of nothingness, waiting all week / all year / her whole life, for a single visitor. - DigablePlanet, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4I was once on the South Korean side of the DMZ looking north. It's strange to see it the other way around. I didn't even know the North let tourists see the DMZ from that angle. Great photos!
- AndrewSnook, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5It's too bad you don't get to see pictures of the real DPRK.
- c0mputar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4I always find the pictures of the DMZ surreal. All is calm and still, nothing looks threatening, but in a matter of minutes, without any preparation from either side, the entire area could be obliterated by thousands of shells and overrun by thousands of armed soldiers.
- tomarocco, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4...an endless supply of hot waitresses.
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4I am actually about to start a dedicated forums about North Korea soon and will add a link to his site...Good find.
- decker12, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4According to the "Vice guide to travel" (linked below), when they visited North Korea, you were even allowed to drink beer at the DMZ's main building.
- quirkopatra, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3People are people so why should it be, you and I should get along so awfully.
- kcfreels, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3That's the Ryuyong Hotel
Never finished, started years ago, the concrete they used at the bottom can't hold any more weight, so they can't finish it.
Here's a video: http://architecture.myninjaplease.com/?p=1677 - diggwut, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3I don't think that was beef they were eating.
- Polycarp87, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3That was the guy who went there to take the pictures, and then was kind enough to upload them and post it on digg for us all to see.
Dick. - Aroundtown27, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3The copy of the Arc de Triomphe isn't quite as good as the original..
- nuketrap, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3They have really big hats! I think their ranking structure is based on how big your hat is, because that liuetenant had a massive hat. Also America and Australia when the hell did you start supporting North Korea, you guys lied to me, I thought you said we weren't with them!
- nemofishclt, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3So even though a madman runs that country, and its blocked from the world. What makes it so bad? (judging only from the pictures)
- bkm72, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Yeah....but "Google Earth" Pyongyang.
....Theres No-one around.
Its all a giant stage. - Auraness, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2This is an amazing collection which offers a very rose-tinted look of how North Korea attempts to portray itself to its own citizens.
- mamboboy, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2I dread to think judging from the Google image search result for 'siton' (moderate safe search most definitely OFF!)
http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=siton&hl=e ... - TylerDuhrdan, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I could have done without the first image with safe search off.
- Grolsch, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2This is like Korean Soviet Union... pretty weird since I was born in USSR and resemblance is astonishing. I kinda want to go there just because I am nostalgic. (Just to visit, of course, like a museum..)
- DirtyVicar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I hope that guide doesn't get into some kind of trouble.
- opitica, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2im so glad you found this, this is an amazing documentary
- myk7, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2whats a siton?
- minnecrapolis, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3Those are only the privileged in North Korea. The majority of the country is dirt poor, live in shacks and don't get much for an education.
There was a whole series on History Channel about how down-trodden most of the country is, even to the point of cannibalism in some instances just to be able to eat. - pOwErEdByNOS, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2If you think these girls are hot, you need to visit Seoul ASAP! Much hotter!
- Obermeister, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Go look up an account of the NK prison camps. Sadly there are no photos of what goes on there, but still, it's chilling.
