- dobry, on 08/17/2008, -0/+8nothing wrong with procrastinating as long as it eventually gets done, or at least most of the way
- itsmabus, on 08/18/2008, -2/+9"Torajans," Sambolinggi, 56, said cheerfully, "they live to die."
Wow. Sounds like a fun place. - Jhiaxuz, on 08/18/2008, -1/+8"Kids, let's go see grandma!"
- shutaro, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5Clearly you've never had ghosts... They really stink up the place.
- SmpleJohn, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5They might get more dead though.
- swizzlestick, on 08/18/2008, -1/+6They should try sky burials, less paperwork: "wherein a human corpse is cut into small pieces and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to the elements or the mahabhuta and animals – especially to birds of prey."

- morningmatters, on 08/18/2008, -1/+5An excerpt from the article:
""After that, there was a little magic," Sambolinggi said. "The man who performed the ritual put a black stone pot, like a cooking pot, in the corner of the room. He told us not to touch it, and warned that if we did, the body would be damaged."
A week later, Sambolinggi smelled a foul odor, which he suspected was wafting from his father's body. He quickly summoned the undertaker.
"He checked and said that it was not the body that smelled bad, but there were many other dead persons' spirits around," Sambolinggi recalled. "He asked me if I'd heard any banging sounds on the door lately, and I said yes. "
Spirits had come knocking, the mortician said, and his magic chased them off. The smell, and apparently the ghosts, never came back. Any lingering doubts Sambolinggi had about the wisdom of Torajan tradition vanished with them."
Hmmm, yeah.. - aerovolce, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3I'm an Indonesian and would just like to say that, this is not true for all Indonesian.
- TexTurboesq, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2Better yet, why are you placing western values of money on a population that honors their families over their wallets?
- ncredblstrength, on 08/18/2008, -1/+3John McCain still hasn't been buried and he's been dead for a few years too
- compgeek, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2Kid's Grandpa's not dead he's just sick no go upstairs and say goodnight
- tresvold, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2one could say that about our funeral process
it is not cheap for us either
my mother passed away in december of 07 and it came close to 10,000 and she was cremated - that isn't including her gravestone, which tacked on another 5000
even though theirs is a longer process, it is similar - shutaro, on 08/18/2008, -1/+3Why do you hate Indonesia?
- HappyChillmore, on 08/18/2008, -3/+4Buried.
- yeahaboutthat, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1As a thanatologist--one who studies dying, death and bereavement from a sociological perspective--this is a fascinating example of how modern technology and the forces of western culture shape ancient rituals. In this case, it is the use of modern chemicals for embalming. Moreover, this elaborate process, while longer and more convoluted than we are used to seeing in contemporary society, nevertheless meets the primary purposes of all death rituals: Disposition of the body (and protection for the remaining population from disease) Closure for the living, Shifts of roles the decedent had to others, and a restrengthening of family ties and connections at a time of disequilibrium and turmoil. No matter how these rituals are composed, they all are built around the needs of the humans left behind. Just fascinating.
- razorsedge555, on 09/04/2008, -0/+1As seen in the film series RING OF FIRE. The meat makes better soup after being aged.
- shutaro, on 08/18/2008, -1/+2I see what you did there.
- BXRWXR, on 08/18/2008, -1/+2Bring out your dead! *clang*

S'okay, we'll come round next year. - Rudegar, on 08/18/2008, -2/+2when i go i want my ashes poured into the beer tank of the local brewery
- Thermosite, on 08/18/2008, -0/+0It's funny because I wanted my ashes to be molded into a Ferrari frame
- chrisinsocalif, on 08/18/2008, -7/+5Sounds pretty emo to me.
- Ramble, on 08/18/2008, -7/+2Personally I'd bury them, just to make sure they don't stink up the place and therefore stop me from scoring with chicks.
- marinebro0306, on 08/18/2008, -9/+3Stupid Amish people.
- mypetridish, on 08/18/2008, -8/+1what a waste. the money can be better used to serve the living. but what do i know, they are indonesians, living in one of the most corrupt countries.
