- elijahyossie, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8Great development - and nice cliched photos of Big Ben, Westminster Bridge, and the London Eye, too (-:
- Milieunet, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7Yep, that is great, but London set the next step to a zero-emission double-decker bus, designed by Foster + Partners in cooperation with Aston Martin and Capoco Design http://tinyurl.com/n95435
- Linguo, on 07/14/2009, -1/+8It'll take 15 years for us to get these in America.
- Narcism, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5I saw one on the streets here in Ottawa, which counts as America...
- Antialias, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3I bet they never thought of that. Good thing you mentioned it before someone got hurt!
- RDRDreg, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3We have had them in Halifax, Bradford & Leeds for years, in fact they are widely used over the whole of the north of England. From what I have seen London is one of the last places to get them
- OrangeTide, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2We already have fuel cell buses in Silicon Valley and bio-diesel and electric buses in San Francisco. I'd say we ahead of the curve.
- tamman2000, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2ummm... They use hybrid buses in Ithaca NY, Honolulu, NYC, Chicago, DC, San Fransisco, and several other cities...
- IvanB, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3FTA: "as six highly efficient hybrid Volvo vehicles hit the streets for the first time."
Hopefully they continue a steady roll-out. - nuteredardvark, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Should have gone with a hydraulic hybrid... much better for large vehicle applications.
- borez, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1"designed by Foster + Partners in cooperation with Aston Martin and Capoco Design "
Sorry mate, unfortunately you're wrong on this ( although I'd love to see that bus on the streets of London) the two companies were joint winners for a design competition to find ideas for a new bus, but it's under tender and the bus design or the constructor haven't been chosen yet.
Read about the competition here: http://tiny.cc/Y8WKf - EmperorAnton, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1I thought there were some prototype hybrid buses in the us already..didn't Mac Trucks make one of them?
- addiggt, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Unfortunately, but at least it's begun somewhere in the world!
- londoniscool, on 07/26/2009, -0/+1I saw one of those buses in Kilburn, London yesterday it was getting towed after it had broken down. Loudmusic you have clearly never been to London and havent got a clue.........
- veenenen, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1We have them in Madison too
- nuteredardvark, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Ann Arbor, MI already has their entire bus fleet converted.
http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/08/31/ann-arbor- ... - rjinswand, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1strange to have 2 different designs, plus isn't it illegal for anybody except the queen to drive without plates?
- Antialias, on 07/14/2009, -0/+12 different buses. No reason that all 3 photos have to be the exact same one.
- TotalHalibut, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2We've had hybrid buses in Newcastle for quite some time - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuayLink
- nuteredardvark, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Currently its more expensive as its not as developed nor mass produced but its more powerful then electric (you can hold a 500hp hydraulic pump in your hand). It also doesn't have the harmful production pollution that creating a large battery does, and the fluid does not wear out like a battery. I could go on and on, but I'm sure they considered it, its just not in the public eye nor is it as "cheap". But thats not to say that they still should not have gone with it.
- mattsidesinger, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1It's really a Hummer with a Volvo shell. It gets even worse gas milage and has a back seat big enough to ...
- hkrob, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Please bring these to Hong Kong !
A few buses may not make a big difference to the amount of CO2 in the environment, but it sure will make a difference when you're on the street next to the exhaust pipes from those diesel monsters - Milieunet, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1You're right, but the plan is to have this zero-emission bus on the road in 2011.
See:
A competitive tendering process has started to decide which company will build the new bus for London. This contract should be awarded by the end of 2009.
The first prototype of the new bus will be on the streets of London by 2011. - BalooUrsidae, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1The doubledecker design will problably never appear in Portland; you're more likely to see a reintroduction of articulated busses there. But hybrid busses are being phased in and have been for the last eight years now: Your federal transit administration dollars at work!
- chupavacas, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Co2 != global warming. Not a bad looking bus. I still like the old ones though.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Hybrids are a sham. They cost a heck of a lot more so it takes many years to break even, and the manufacturing of batteries is just as if not more harmful to the environment. And that's if you accept that climate change is abnormal (which it isn't).
- hkrob, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1I guess they just forgot to consider that
/s - LoudMusic, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Vancouver, Washington, has been running hybrid buses for ... A YEAR. Glad you could catch up "our buildings are older than your country", UK.
http://www.kgw.com/neighborhood/vancouver/stories/ ... - damnshoes, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1ooh bambi. ;-)
- rjinswand, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1look at the grille at the front in the first 2 pics compared to the third... shop?
- RickStrom, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0Mack Trucks, Inc. delivered a diesel-electric hybrid refuse truck to the city of New York in May this year. It is the first production intent parallel diesel-electric hybrid truck in the U.S. designed specifically for Class 8 heavy-duty applications and meeting the EPA’10 emission regulations.
- L0NER, on 07/14/2009, -2/+1I hope they don't hit the overpass
- skit4king, on 07/14/2009, -2/+1Amount of CO2 less in the air because of one hybrid bus = low.
Amount of CO2 created to make one bus ...
It's good to see a change but it's not a reality in terms of problem solving. - warMen, on 07/14/2009, -5/+2Who cares... 25% less emissions wohoo! 6 busses!. This global warming crap is a sham anyway.
